According to our faith Mary’s body was taken up to heaven by the power of her Son. The Assumption signals the end of Mary’s earthly life and marks her return to heaven to be reunited with Jesus. For many, the most telling verification of the Assumption can be found not only in theological studies but in the medium of Mary’s many apparitions which the Church has declared worthy of belief. Where these apparitions have appeared, millions each year visit the Shrines of Our Lady including those at Guadalupe, Lourdes and Fatima. As people in today’s world there is a constant search for God in the midst of secularisation. The global world opinion may conflict with church teachings and somewhere we need to make sense of who we are and where we belong. Mary’s story is rife with suffering that we can’t comprehend. The suffering she endured was her strength. It is easy to feel discouraged when we face suffering but then, we can look to Mary. This is the hope that Mary’s Assumption brings to us, in living out our own lives. Suffering is inevitable, but Mary reminds us that that suffering is not without meaning. This suffering is how we can show love and turn sorrow to joy. There are many ways to celebrate and honour Our Lady for the Feast of the Assumption. As families we can pray, attend Mass, share a meal, share faith stories or view and use an image of Mary that may be used in prayer Regards Brian Martin Principal
