RECALLING THE GLORY OF THE FIRST (old) COVENANT:EXODUS 19:10 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, 11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 12 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death: 13 There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount. 14 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not at your wives.

Exodus 1916 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 18 AND MOUNT SINAI WAS ALTOGETHER ON A SMOKE, BECAUSE THE LORD DESCENDED UPON IT IN FIRE: AND THE SMOKE THEREOF ASCENDED AS THE SMOKE OF A FURNACE, AND THE WHOLE MOUNT QUAKED GREATLY. 19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. 20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

WHAT IS THE POINT OF ALL THESE?THE GLORY OF THE LORD WHICH WAS REVEALED WHEN THE LAW WAS GIVEN WAS VERY REAL a burnt mountain still stands today; how much more will the glory be of the new covenant of grace? HOW REAL CAN THE MANIFESTATION OF THE GLORY BE?The wilderness beneath the mountain of Sinai is absolutely barren; YET, THE LORD SUSTAINED ISRAEL (AT THAT TIME AT LEAST TWO MILLION PEOPLE) FOR FORTY YEARS!How much more able is God able to sustain us today???

NOW WE GO TO THE GREAT SUBJECT MATTER OFPRAYER

The disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray (Luke 11:1-13)1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. 2 He said to them, When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.

Luke 115 Then he said to them, Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him. 7 Then the one inside answers, Dont bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I cant get up and give you anything. 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the mans boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

Luke 119 So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!Luke 11:1-13

THIS WAS A REVOLUTIONARY TEACHING FOR THREE REASONS:FIRST, the Jews NEVER PRAYED TO GOD AS THEIR FATHER;God was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob but never the Father THEY CANNOT EVEN PRONOUNCE THE NAME OF GOD!! Now Jesus is telling them to call God THEIR FATHER!!- Jesus was telling them that those who believe in Jesus have become the sons (children) of God (John 1:12), and therefore, God has also become their Father- That the prayer of the Christian is towards God AS THEIR FATHER (OUR FATHER)- And because God is OUR LOVING HEAVENLY FATHER, all we need is ask, seek and find, and we will receive, and find and the door will be opened to us

SECOND REASON (why this was a revolutionary teaching):JESUS TAUGHT THAT THE MAIN THING ABOUT PRAYER IS the HOLY SPIRIT, AND THAT YOU CAN ASK THE FATHER TO GIVE YOU THE HOLY SPIRIT: Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!Luke 11:1-13

BECAUSE OF THIS REVOLUTIONARY TEACHING:PRAYER HAS BEEN MADE SIMPLEPRAYER HAS BEEN MADE AN ISSUE OF RELATIONSHIP WITH THE HEAVENLY FATHER, AND NOT OF RELIGIONPRAYER IS A DELIGHT, NOT A DUTYPRAYER, IN A VERY REAL SENSE, HAS BECOME VERY, VERY EASY, JUST LIKE TALKING TO YOUR LOVING HEAVENLY FATHER.UNDERSTANDING THE WORK OF, AND WORKING WITH, THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS BECOME VERY CRUCIAL IN A VIBRANT PRAYER LIFE (PRAY IN THE SPIRIT)

There is a THIRD REASON: The Lords Prayer is a COMPLETE OUTLINE of LIFEOur Father GODS PATERNITY (Who is our father? Paternity - identity)Who art in Heaven GODS PLACE (Where do we belong? citizenship)Hallowed be Thy Name GODS PRAISE (What do we seek?)Thy Kingdom come GODS PROGRAM (What is our involvement?)Thy will be done GODS PRIORITY (What is important, truly matters?)Give us this day our daily bread GODS PROVISION (Who is our security for our needs?)And forgive us our trespasses GODS PARDON (Have we found freedom?)As we forgive those who trespass against us GODS PRE-REQUISITE (Have we released others who have hurt us? MICAH WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE?)And lead us not into temptation GODS PATH (How do we walk?)But deliver us from evil GODS PROTECTION (What is our insurance?)For thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory GODS POWER (Who is our protector and power source? Our confidence?)Amen GODS PEACE (We submit everything to Him)

With thesePRAYER INDEED DOES SOUND SO SIMPLE AND EASY.WHAT THEN IS FASTING?IS IT NECESSARY?WILL IT NOT COMPLICATE THINGS?DO WE STILL NEED TO FAST IF GOD IS OUR LOVING HEAVENLY FATHER?

LET US SEE HOW CHRIST HIMSELF PRAYED (Hebrews 5)5In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the gloryof becoming a high priest.But God saidto him,You are my Son;today I have become your Father.[a]6And he says in another place,You are a priest forever,in the order of Melchizedek.[b]7During the days of Jesus life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tearsto the one who could save him from death, and he was heardbecause of his reverent submission.8Sonthough he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered9and, once made perfect,he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him10and was designated by God to be high priestin the order of Melchizedek.

WE ARE ALSO PRIESTS: AND MUCH, IN FACT, MOST OF OUR PRAYERS COME FROM OUR ROYAL PRIESTHOOD(1 PETER 2)4As you come to him, the living Stonerejected by humans but chosen by Godand precious to him5you also, like living stones, are being builtinto a spiritual house[a]to be a holy priesthood,offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.9But you are a chosen people,a royal priesthood,a holy nation,Gods special possession,that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

LET US, THEREFORE, DISTINGUISH THE PRAYER OF A SON/DAUGHTER to the Father, FROM THE SON/DAUGHTER ACTING AS INTERCESSOR before a Holy GodWHEN WE PRESENT TO GOD OUR NEEDS, WE COME TO HIM AS A FATHER, AND PRAYER IS SIMPLE, SPONTANEOUS, FREE, EASYBUT WHEN WE STAND IN THE GAP FOR OTHERS, WHEN WE PRAY FOR OTHERS, FOR THE NATION, THIS IS NOW INTERCESSION, AND WE STAND BETWEEN GOD AND MAN AS GODS INTERCESSORS

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRAYER AND INTERCESSION: I Timothy 22I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people2for kings and all those in authority,that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godlinessand holiness.3This is good, and pleases God our Savior,4who wantsall peopleto be savedand to come to a knowledge of the truth.5For there is one Godand one mediatorbetween God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,6who gave himself as a ransomfor all people.

PAUL ON PRAYER: I THESSALONIANS 39For what thanks can we render to God for you in return for all the joy with which we rejoice before our God on your account,10 AS WE NIGHT AND DAY KEEP PRAYING MOST EARNESTLY THAT WE MAY SEE YOUR FACE, AND MAY COMPLETE WHAT IS LACKING IN YOUR FAITH;11 Now may our God and Father Himself and Jesus our Lord direct our way to you;

2 TIMOTHY 1:3I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day,4longing to see you, even as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy.

EPHESIANS 3:14-21For this reason, I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledgethat you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

WHEN PEOPLE PRAY ALL NIGHT, IN TEARS, TRAVAILING IN INTERCESSION, ARE THEY MAKING PRAYER COMPLICATED?Is this what we call pudag-pudag?

Colossians 1: 3-14For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

ACTS 20:31 (Paul to the Ephesian brethren):So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

Which brings us to the subject of FASTING:HEBREW WORD TSOMGREEK WORD NESTEIAMeaning to deprive oneself, to deny oneself; to afflict ones self; to say no to a desire

The most comprehensive statement on THE PURPOSE OF FASTING (ISAIAH 58)6Is not this the kind of fastingI have chosen:to loose the chains of injusticeand untie the cords of the yoke,to set the oppressedfreeand break every yoke?7Is it not to share your food with the hungryand to provide the poor wanderer with shelterwhen you see the naked, to clothethem,and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?8Then your light will break forth like the dawn,and your healingwill quickly appear;then your righteousness[a]will go before you,and the glory of theLordwill be your rear guard.9Then you will call,and theLordwill answer;you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

ISAIAH 58If you do away with the yoke of oppression,with the pointing fingerand malicious talk,10and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungryand satisfy the needs of the oppressed,then your lightwill rise in the darkness,and your night will become like the noonday.11TheLordwill guideyou always;he will satisfy your needsin a sun-scorched landand will strengthenyour frame.You will be like a well-watered garden,like a springwhose waters never fail.12Your people will rebuild the ancient ruinsand will raise up the age-old foundations;you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

ISAIAH 58 (Keeping the Sabbath is a form of fasting)13If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbathand from doing as you please on my holy day,if you call the Sabbath a delightand theLords holy day honorable,and if you honor it by not going your own wayand not doing as you please or speaking idle words,14then you will find your joyin theLord,and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heightsof the landand to feast on the inheritanceof your father Jacob.For the mouth of theLordhas spoken.

The MOST COMPREHENSIVE STATEMENT ON FASTING (Isaiah 58):TO LOOSE THE BANDS OF WICKEDNESS (deliverance) v. 6aUNDO HEAVY BURDENS v. 6bLET THE OPPRESSED GO FREE v. 6cBREAK EVERY YOKE v. 6dBREAK THE SPIRIT OF POVERTY (GIVE BREAD TO THE HUNGRY AND PROVIDE THE POOR WITH SHELTER) v. 7BREAKTHROUGH (allow peoples light to break forth like the morning) v. 8HEALTH AND HEALING v. 8bCAUSE RIGHTEOUSNESS TO SHINE v. 10RELEASE THE GLORY OF THE LORD v. 10

The example of Jesus:1. YESHUA FASTED

2. AND CLEARLY TAUGHT FASTING.

Matthew 41Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be temptedby the devil.2 After fasting forty days and forty nights,he was hungry.3The temptercame to him and said, "If you are the Son of God,tell these stones to become bread."4Jesus answered,"It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"THE NEXT VERSES SHOW THAT:Jesus overcame Satan began to preachAnd chose his twelve disciples

YESHUA ALSO TAUGHT FASTINGAT LEAST THREE THINGS HE TAUGHT ABOUT FASTING:

1. The friends of the bridegroom will fast when the bridegroom is away - LUKE 5:33-39Jesus Questioned About Fasting33They said to him, Johns disciplesoften fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.34Jesus answered,Can you make the friends of the bridegroomfast while he is with them?35BUT THE TIME WILL COME WHEN THE BRIDEGROOM WILL BE TAKEN FROM THEM;IN THOSE DAYS THEY WILL FAST.36He told them this parable:No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.37And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.38No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.39And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, The old is better.

Here he said something VERY INTERESTING:FASTING IS CONNECTED TO THE ABILITY TO RECEIVE NEW WINELuke 5:36He told them this parable:No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.37And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.38No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. CHURCHES THAT DO NOT GET INTO FERVENT, SPIRIT-LED PRAYING, WITH FASTING, will HAVE DIFFICULTY RECEIVING NEW WINE, NEW MOVES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

2. Second thing Jesus taught: FASTING IS REGULAR Matthew 6Giving to the Needy6Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.2So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.Prayer5And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standingin the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.Fasting16When you fast,do not look somberas the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,18so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

3. Third thing Jesus taught: Fasting is required for higher spiritual authority Matthew 1714 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, 15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatic, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. 16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him to me.

Matthew 1718 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21 HOWBEIT THIS KIND GOETH NOT OUT BUT BY PRAYER AND FASTING

The MECHANICAL EXPLANATION for FASTING (I Corinthians 15)If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.45So it is written: The first man Adam became a living being[f];the last Adam,a life-giving spirit.46The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.47The first man was of the dust of the earth;the second man is OF heaven.48As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are OF heaven.49And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man,so shall we[g]bear the image of the heavenly man.50I declare to you, brothers and sisters, THAT FLESH AND BLOODCANNOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD,nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

FLESH CANNOT RECEIVE SPIRITUAL THINGS -- I CORINTHIANS 26We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,9However, as it is written: "NO EYE HAS SEEN, NO EAR HAS HEARD, NO MIND HAS CONCEIVED WHAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM"--10but God has revealedit to us by his Spirit.The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.11For who among men knows the thoughts of a manexcept the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.12We have not received the spiritof the worldbut the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.14The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God,for they are foolishnessto him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

I CORINTHIANS 924Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?Runin such a way as to get the prize.25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crownthat will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.26Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly;I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.27No, I strike a blow to my bodyand make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.I BEAT MY FLESH OR I AFFLICT MY FLESH IS THE SAME WORD FOR FASTING TO AFFLICT ONESELF. If we do not subjugate the flesh, we run aimlessly and box in the air.

INSTANCES WHEN BELIEVERS FASTED IN THE BIBLE1. WHEN INTERCEDING FOR A NATIONNEHEMIAH 9:1 Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.

ESTHER 4:3 And in every province, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

2. When we seek the face of the LORD:DANIEL 9:3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: JOEL 2:12 Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:

3. When the work of the kingdom is undertaken and the church organizedACTS 14:21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, 22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. 23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

4. FOR SUPERNATURAL REVELATIONAct 10:30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, 31 And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. 32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee. 33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

CAUTION: Fasting is not a formula or a hunger strike to GodPsalm 35:13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom. (MY PRAYERS RETURNED TO ME UNSANSWERED)14 I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily, as one that mourneth for his mother.

5. ZEAL FOR THE HOUSE OF THE LORDcaused DAVID TO FAST (Psalm 69) 7 Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face. 8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children. 9 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me. 10 When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach. 11 I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them. 12 They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards. 13 But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation. 14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters. 15 Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me. 16 Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.

6. WHEN WE ARE UNDER UNUSUAL ATTACK (Psalm 109)1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise; 2 For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue. 3 They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause.

Psalm 10921 But do thou for me, O GOD the Lord, for thy name's sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me. 22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. 23 I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust. 24 My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness. 29 Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle. 30 I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude. 31 For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.

7.
