Staff Changes at the end of 2016Mrs Sharon Lehtonen - accepted a position at Catholic Education Melbourne as an Education Officer, Leadership and SchoolDevelopment, starting in 2017. We are all extremely appreciative and grateful for Sharon’s dedication, achievements andcommitment to the Kolbe staff, and to the Kolbe community in general, over the past four years, as Director of Staff Formation.
Mrs Michelle Vella - was on Maternity Leave in 2016 and has accepted a position in another school. Mr Nick Croker - accepted aleadership position at another school; from the start of 2017. We thank them too for their contributions over the past three years.
Traffic - Lysterfield DriveThe safety and well-being of everyone is absolutely vital. Your patience, cooperation and responsibility are essential.
The speed limit within the vicinity of the school is 40kph during designated morning and afternoon times. Please follow all roadrules, abide by all speed limits and the regulations regarding school crossings; and any traffic management signs.
U-turns are not permitted. U turns are dangerous and place at risk the safety of all road users and pedestrians. Please use theroundabout at the corner of Lysterfield Drive and Beechworth Avenue.
The north car park (near Kalorama Street) is closed from 8.20am - 8.50am and from 3.00pm – 3.40pm. Traffic is not permitted toenter or drive through during these times.
Please be aware of students walking to and from the College and of other vehicles, especially the buses, at the oval car park.
When travelling to and from the college, no-one should be in a hurry! Please be responsible, patient and courteous. Look afterour community: your children; our students & staff.
Year 7 2018 Enrolment – For Current Year 6 StudentsEnrolment Application Form - The Application Form is available for download on the website and is also available from CatholicPrimary School Offices. Year 7 2018 Applications close Friday 17 February 2017.

Social Networking – Online CommunicationOver the next two weeks, a number of information sessions will be conducted with classes regarding student wellbeing, cyber-safetyand the appropriate use of technology.
At Kolbe Catholic College we recognise the important role that technology plays in the lives of young people, in their ongoinglearning and the consolidation of skills for their future. For young people and adults, mobile phones, iPads, laptop computers etc aretheir ‘windows’ to the internet social networking sites such as Email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others . The majority ofpeople use these sites responsibly.
As the College works in partnership with parents, we expect that all parents have had conversations with their children about theuse of ICT and that parents have established suitable acceptable ways for your family for monitoring access to, and use of, thesesites.
The College continues to work with students and families in assisting them to develop a better understanding of what is acceptableand unacceptable in the areas of positive relationships and appropriate use of the internet. These are addressed in our Pastoral CareProgram and at various events with groups of students.

One of the aims and benefits of wellbeing programs and parent communication with children is prevention. What is not taught byfamilies, schools and community agencies might not be learnt. Collectively, we aim to help each member of the College communityrealise his or her own self-worth and potential in an atmosphere where all are accepted and valued.
College NewsletterThe newsletter is published fortnightly and placed on the College website for reading and downloading. Hard copies are not given tostudents. However, hard copies are available at the office for students/families who do not have easy access to the internet.

From the Deputy Principal
The start of the 2017 academic year has been very positive at Kolbe. It has been a busy time for all, nonetheless, students havetransitioned well, and learning in and out of the classroom has been very productive.
Over the next fortnight, the College will hold a number of different year level information evenings for all families. The key purposeis to welcome you in joining us for the 2017 school year, and to establish clarity as to routines, procedures and expectations held atthe College. These are integral at Kolbe since they enhance student learning in partnerships with families and the extendedcommunity. Please ensure to attend the designated information evening relevant to your child.
As mentioned last year, our federal government has created an app available to all with great information about parenting supportfor High School students. The app can be found and downloaded for free here: https://www.learningpotential.gov.au
Please take note of the following, and discuss the points with your child:
UniformThere has been a considerable improvement in the way that our students wear their uniforms. However, we continue to encountera small minority of students who find the correct wearing of the uniform challenging. To assist your child in this, we ask that youfamiliarise yourself with your child’s timetable so that you know in which days he/she is expected to wear their full summer schooluniform or the sports uniform. Students out of uniform may be sent home. Students are also expected to wear their blazers as theouter garment each morning on their way to and from school. Far too many students wear their red jumpers as the outer garmentand this is a breach of the uniform policy. If the weather allows it, and students choose not to wear the blazer, then it is appropriatefor them to wear their school shirts as the outer garment. Students are not allowed to wear jumpers under their sports’ tops.
ShavingAll boys are required to attend school clean-shaven at all times. If there are reasons obstructing this expectation, please see yourson’s Learning Advisor or House Leader to address the issue.
Students Leaving School EarlyAny student who needs to leave the College early is required to follow the procedure outlined below.
The student hands a note written by a parent/guardian to the Learning Advisor during morning pastoral care and shows the note tothe subject teacher at the start of the lesson during which they are leaving. The student hands the note to the office and iselectronically signed out. All EARLY DEPARTURES require that the student be signed out and collected from the office by a parent orguardian.
Students Contacting Their Parents During the School DayIf your child needs to contact you during the day, they are asked to see their Learning Advisor or House Leader so that they can usea College phone to make the call. Given that students are not permitted to use their mobile phone during the school day this willsave them the disappointment of having their phone confiscated.
Counselling for studentsThe College facilitates counselling sessions available to all students. If you feel that your son/daughter could benefit fromcounselling, please refer the matter to their respective Learning Advisor or House Leader. Students may also seek counsellingdirectly through their Learning Advisor or House Leader. Please notify me at the College if you have questions about this service.

Year 12 2016 Pathways Data2016 was another successful year for our Year 12 students. Included in this edition of the College Newsletter is a summary of thepathways pursued by individual students. The College congratulates all students on their success.
Academic Week (Monday 6 February 2017-Wednesday 15 February 2017)As part of the implementation of the 5 Ls of Learning and strands of Visible Learning, the College is in the midst of hosting its firstAcademic Week for 2017. This is proving to be a huge success, providing the opportunity for the community to:
Reconnect with and focus on our core purpose of learning and teaching.
Revisit the foundation for and essential components of learning and teaching within our context.
Enhance the use of strategies and tools that aim to embed the 5 Ls of Learning and Visible Learning Strands into our cultureand practice.
An essential component of this Academic Week is a focus on ‘Establishing Learning Partnerships’. This key area of focus is provingto be fruitful, with students and staff redefining learning and working together to strength their learning relationships. Allindividuals and groups within our community are to be congratulated on their achievements throughout this time.
Learning Resources for 2017All students should now have the required materials for learning in 2017. The learning resources that students require are thosepublished on the Learning Resource Catalogues distributed in Term Four 2016. Any questions or concerns regarding the arrival,mode or distribution of learning materials can be directed to myself.
Year 12 Master ClassesThis week a schedule for Year 12 Master Classes was released to all Year 12 students. These master classes will occur duringdesignated study periods and aim to assist students as they progress through the different stages of the Year 12 journey. Workshopswill focus on a range of areas including study skills, the VTAC process, student pathways etc. Times for the completion of somecommon School Assessed Coursework will also be scheduled as part of the Master Class Schedule.
Year 7 2017 Academic Testing ResultsYear 7 families will be aware that students took part in academic testing at the end of Year 6. This data is currently being used bythe College to set goals to inform students’ next stage of learning. A summary of the testing will distributed to all Year 7 families atthe upcoming Year 7 Information Evening. Those students who completed the ‘Absentee Testing’ this week will receive their resultsin March 2017. Families with questions related to the testing can contact Ms Erin Lane, Curriculum Leader (Years 7-9) or myself atthe College.
Homework ClubThroughout 2017, our very popular Homework Club will continue to be offered for students. This is a great way for students toreceive some extra academic support and complete homework tasks as well as study alongside their peers in the comfort of theCollege Library. Homework Club will commence on Monday 13 February 2017, operating every Monday and Thursday afternoonbetween 3.30pm and 4.15pm.
In addition to the general strand of Homework Club, the English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Mathematics strands ofHomework Club will continue to operate in 2017.
Year 7 Cyber DayAs part of the Year 7 Stepping Stones Program and to assist students with the integration of their ICT devices into their learningprograms, all Year 7 students will be involved in a ‘Cyber License Workshop Day’. These workshops aim to support students in theirtransition to the digital classroom and will ensure all students are equipped with the relevant knowledge and skills to be active andinformed digital citizens at Kolbe Catholic College.

As part of the program for this day, students will have their College personal identification photo taken. To facilitate this, studentswill be required to wear their normal full College Summer uniform. Families with questions regarding this initiative are asked tomake contact with Ms Erin Lane (Curriculum Leader: Years 7-9).
Year 7-12 Assessment SchedulesWe are currently in the process of creating Assessment Schedules for students in all year levels. These aim to:
- Strengthen the partnership between home and school, allowing parents to have a greater idea of what is happening atschool.
- Establish student ownership and accountability for learning.
- Allow parents to assist their children with time management and study skills.
- Ensure that students are not overwhelmed with too much assessment at one time.
- Ensure Learning Advisors are aware of the assessment demands being placed on students at any given time.
- Ensure all groups operate within a similar assessment time frame.
Students in Years 7-10 will receive an Assessment Schedule for Term One. Students in Years 11 and 12 will receive a schedule for allof Semester One. These will be available for students and families to download from SEQTA and the ‘Curriculum Section’ of theCollege website in the coming weeks.

Last year we introduced the 5 Ls of Learning to the Kolbe Catholic College community. This year we launch phase two (2) of the 5 Lsof Learning. With greater emphasis in using our break-out spaces and outdoor environments along with our continued focus onusing contemporary literacies and activities that reflect abilities required in the real world it looks like it is going to be anotherfantastic year at Kolbe Catholic College!

Australian Catholic University ‘U @ University’ ProgramIn January 2017, four current Year 10 students from Kolbe Catholic College took up theopportunity to participate in the Australian Catholic University ‘U @ UNIVERSITY’ program.Involvement in this program is by invitation only, making it a huge honour for students to havethe opportunity to participate. Reports from the staff at Australian Catholic University were thatthe four students selected from Kolbe Catholic College were exemplary in their approach touniversity life and application within key workshops. The College congratulates all students whowere involved.
The program objectives are to:
Demystify higher education for specific groups by providing opportunities to become familiar with the everyday reality ofuniversity education and campus life
Encourage a perception of university as a positive and beneficial post-secondary option
Provide opportunities for students to visit and use university campuses.
Congratulations to Aidan Suski, Timothy Carew, Christopher Hirmiz and Rochelle Cabral for graduating from the U@UNIVERSITYprogram.
Congratulations to the Year 12 students of 2016!2016 was once again a fulfilling year for Kolbe Catholic College Year 12 students.
141 students successfully completed Year 12
117 studying VCE and 24 completing VCAL
124 students applied for tertiary courses in 2016, with 120 gaining an offer for their chosen course (61% University courses and39% TAFE courses) with most students receiving either their first or second preference.
A further 10 students were offered full time work, 4 as an apprentice or trainee. Other students are investigating pathway optionsincluding travel opportunities.
