Sunday Reflection Quite an impression Who has influenced your life most for Christ? It’s a tough question, but most of us can narrow the list down to two or three Christians who brought faith to life for us. Take a moment and remember what made these individuals so special. You might remember a brightness about their spirits, how they made life a little shinier, warmer, as if you’d moved a little closer to the sun. Or maybe it was the way they brought the flavour of God’s love into the simplest of conversation, how their words seemed to drip with humility, compassion, a true taste of Christ. And that salt, that light, was infectious. You wanted what they possessed and they gave it almost invisibly. This is what it means to be the light and the salt of Christ: touching lives with the light of love and compassion, carrying the salt of truth and mercy to all those around us. What image, what taste are you leaving behind today?

  • Let your light shine before others. (Matthew 5.16)We are brought up not to brag. True humility, however, does not conceal or suppress talents. Identify and use your gifts because they come from God. When others see your good works, may they give "glory to your Father in heaven".

Youth CornerMy family is a sports family. As a kid in Calgary my dad took me countless times to Hitmen and Stampeder games. We've watched the rise of Tom Brady and the last games of NFL legends like Dan Marino. The important thing is to never forget that no one man can carry a team. Everyone has to work together and believe in the team, in order to win. Youth ministry is no different. We aren't fighting for a trophy, but for the future of our church and her mission to bring Jesus to

the youth. Our youth coordinators cannot do it alone, we need the help of our team. We need the help of all the parish.

SacramentsConfirmation Workshop #1 is next Thursday, February 9, 7:00 p.m. at Assumption hall. All candidates and a parent are required to participate in the workshops.

First Communion Workshop #1 is Thursday, February 16, 6:30 p.m. at Assumption hall.

    Not just for youth

Anointing Mass The ministry of Jesus to the sick is central to the life of the Church. February 11 (Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes) highlights the healing ministry of the Church. It reminds us that service to the sick and suffering cannot be neglected. It recognizes the great efforts of doctors, nurses, health care institutions and pastoral care givers to restore health to those afflicted with illness and disease. In honour of World Day of the Sick we will be having an Anointing Mass on Saturday, February 11, 10:00 a.m. at Assumption. Everyone is welcome.

Norman Levesque, Director, Green Churches Network will give a presentation/workshop on Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si and Care for Creation. Come discover the biblical reference regarding our relationship with God’s creation and take away useful tools for the promotion of environmental awareness and action in the Church.

Our generation is a witness (and an accomplice) to the environmental crisis. As Christians, many feel a call to take care of creation and to share this calling with their

    Christian community.

    Sunday, February 12, 7:00 p.m. at Assumption.

Fr. Kevin’s Cluttered Desk So what does it mean to let your light shine before others? (Matthew 5:16) Often when we talk about humility this is one area that comes up. How do you let your light shine and still remain humble? Part of it is realizing that the light that is shining is the Christ within you. At baptism the minister says, “receive the light of Christ. Parents and Godparents this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly…”. Or we can look at the great old song “This little light of mine I’m going to let it shine”. In both cases the light that is shining is Christ shining through us. John the Baptist reminds us that Christ must increase and the “I” must decrease. The challenge is letting the light of Christ shine through for all to see. We also need to understand the light as our divine nature, for we are all called to the divine, to be holy as our Father is Holy. The purpose of this is the importance of being a shining example for others to follow and for most of us not following the bad examples out there. A question frequently asked of youth is “who do you look up to?” This can be a very telling question, for often it tells us why people respond or act in certain ways. If the person we look up to is generous and kind, then we tend to do that ourselves. If the person we look up to is arrogant and rude, then we tend to follow that also. The people we look up to can influence us in everything from the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the people we associate with (or don’t associate with) and even our attitudes towards God. I think we all have heard or said something like, “none of my friends go to church so why do I have to go?” The simple answer is so that your light will shine. The more profound answer is so that you can pray for them. At every Mass we attend we have the ability to offer that Mass for a friend, a family member or someone we know is in need of God’s help. Our attendance at the Mass, our attention and our participation is our sacrificial offering to God for that person, for the offering comes from the heart. Most people tend to look at the Our Father as the greatest of prayers but in reality the greatest prayer that we have is the Mass, for in the Mass we relive the final action of Jesus for us, His feeding us in word and His Body and Blood. Why? So that our light might shine for all to see.

    Peace Fr. Kevin
