Use meaning to predict, monitor,
self-correct
Read and write about 10 words
Firm up letter knowledge
Hear and use initial
consonant/vowel sounds
Produce rhymes
Picture Sorts

sorting pictures by
initial consonant
sounds.
Dd: desk, duck
Hh: hangar, hand
Long vowels-media
Ii: kite, sidel
Ee: leaf, feet
Making Words
Students use magnetic
letters to make rhyming
words by changing initial
consonants.
Examples: go, no, so
cat, hat, mat
Sound Boxes
Dictate words with two
phonemes, one being a long
vowel. Students segment the
sounds on their fingers and
write one letter in each box.
Encourage students to say
the sound as they write the
letter in the box.
s o Examples: me, we, he, go, no,
so
Guided Writing
Dictate a simple sentence (3-5 words) that
contains the targeted sight words. It should
contain at least one unknown word that students
must stretch out. Sight words that have been
taught should be spelled correctly. Whenever
possible, include other sight words that have
been previously taught.
Example: I like pizza. Comprehension: Before reading, discuss pictures
and unfamiliar concepts. During reading prompt
students to use meaning at difficulty.
After reading, discuss the story.
Level B Students learn:

Use meaning, structure to
predict, monitor, self-correct
Cross check meaning and first
letters with prompting
Read and write about 20 words
Hear and use initial
consonant/vowel sounds

Guided Writing
Dictate a sentence (5-7 words) that relates to
the story. It should contain the targeted sight
words and other words that have been previously
taught. Encourage invented spelling of unknown
words. Example: The tiger is in the cage. Comprehension: Before reading, discuss using
the pictures. During reading prompt students to
make sense.
After reading, discuss the story and retell
events.
Level C Students learn:
Use meaning, structure, known
words and initial consonants to
predict, monitor, self-correct
Cross check meaning and first
letters to problem solve unknown
words without teacher
prompting
Read and write about 30 words
Hear and record short vowels
during writing
Hear and record CVC sounds in
sequence during writing with
prompting.
Maintain one-to-one matching,
without pointing, in familiar
books
Picture Sorts
Short vowels (e, i, u)

words by changing
initial, medial and final
letters.

Guided Writing
Students write a dictated sentence with 7-10
words. Gradually extend the length of the
sentence to increase auditory memory. Include
known sight words and unknown words for
students to stretch.
Example: “Come and look at the red car,” said
Nick.
Comprehension: Before reading, discuss the
story line and encourage predictions. During

What To Do When Young Readers Get “Stuck” On A Word:
1. Wait and see if they work it out.
2. Say, “Try it again.”
3. Say, “Look at the picture.”
4. Say, “Think what would make sense.”
5. Say, “Read the sentence again and sound out the tricky word.”
6. Tell the word.
Word Attack Strategy
1. Think about what would make sense.
2. Look at the pictures.
3. Reread the sentence.
4. Crash into the unknown word and say the beginning sound.
5. Say the word you think makes sense, sounds right, and looks right.
6. Read on.
Comprehension Coaching
Be sure your student understand what they are reading. Teach them to
identify the characters, setting, plot, and solution. Help your students make
predictions and inferences about the story.
Can you retell the story?
Who are the main characters in the story?
Where does it take place?
When did this part of the story take place?
Is there a problem in the story?
What were the actions taking place?
How do you think the problem will be solved?
Read ahead. Were you right in your prediction?
What was the solution to the problem?
How did the story end?
What feelings did the character have in the beginning, middle, and end
of the story?
Pictures Clues Coaching
Teach your students to use the clues in pictures to identify unknown words in
the text. Look for information about the character and the setting of the
story in the pictures.
Who do you see in the picture?
Tell me all of the names that the character can be called. (girl,
daughter, princess, etc.)
How is the character feeling?
What is happening in the picture?
What details do you see in the background?
Where does the story take place?
Can you make a prediction from this picture?
Does it look like there may be any problems in the story?
One-To-One Correspondence Coaching (Tracking words)
Teach your students to make sure each printed word matches the spoken
word. Students can demonstrate one-to-one correspondence by pointing word
for the word when listening to the text being read-aloud.
Have the students point to the words while they read.
Observe the students to see if they are following aloud. If you see
them off track, ask them “Did you run out of words? Did you have too
many words?”
Ask the student to read again. Inform him that you will be making a
check mark for each word that is read. Compare the checks to the
amount of words on the page.
Point to the words as you read together. Ask the student to observe
what happened when you finished reading. Ask him to observe if your
finger stopped pointing when you ran out of words to read.
Decoding Coaching
Help your students develop phonemic awareness to understand the letter/sound
relationships of initial consonants, final consonants, blends, digraphs, onsets
and rimes, prefixes, and suffixes in one-syllable and multi-syllable words.
What is the beginning sound of the word?
Do you recognize another part of the word?
When you look at the word, is there a chunk that you have seen before?
Underline it with your finger. What is that sound in that chunk?
Did you look at the middle and the end of the word?
Do you know another word with that same ending rime or word family?
Do you see any blends or digraphs?
Can you find the base word?
Fluency Coaching
Help your students read the text with fluency and articulation. Model for
your students how to read as if they are speaking with inflection in their
voices. Say:
Read the text for me and point to the words.
Read it now without using your finger. Did your eyes have trouble
keeping their place on the page?
Read the text again but now try to read it as if you are talking.
Point to the important punctuation marks that show you when to slow
down.
What should your voice do when you see a comma, a period, a question
mark, or an exclamation mark?
Listen to my voice as I read the next sentence. Am I reading at a
fluent pace? Now, you try it. Read it like me.
Directionality Coaching
Be sure your students comprehend directionality. Check for a clear
understanding of left to right, return sweep, and top to bottom sequencing of
print in lines, sentences and books.
Show me the front of the book.
Point to the title.
Open the book.
Which page do we read first?
Point to the first word we will read.
In which direction should we turn the page?
Where do our eyes go next after we get to the end of the line?
Rubric for Pre-A Small Group Lesson This rubric can be used for self-evaluation, observation, or coaching.
Components Evident (√)
Classroom Environment
Other students were working independently in literacy work stations.
Small-group lesson materials were organized; table was free of clutter.
Teacher was not interrupted by other students in the room.
Each student had an alphabet chart.
Teacher had an updated letter/sound chart for the students in the group.
Working With Letter and Names
Teacher gave each student a personal letter bag of known letters.
Students did one of the letters/names activities using their known letters.
Teacher worked with individual students asking for letters and/or sounds.
Name activity (optional): Students did name puzzle, used magnetic letters to construct name or did rainbow-writing with name. (This activity is discontinued when students can write their first name without a model.)
Time: 3-4 minutes
Working With Sounds
Students did one of the following activities (circle):
Clapped syllables, worked with rhyming words, did picture sorts
