Birthday Traditions around the World
The tradition of birthday parties starteda long time ago. People thought thatthere was a special danger from evilspirits, so friends and family cametogether to bring good thoughts andwishes and even presents. At one time,only kings had birthday parties but astime went by, children and then adults
began to have their own birthdaycelebrations. There are some traditions –such as sending birthday cards, blowingout the candles on a birthday cake andsinging the ‘Happy Birthday’ song, thatyou can find almost anywhere, any time.Others are more specific to certain ages… and certain countries.
1 In China, everyone celebrates theirbirthday on New Year’s Day: they becomeone year older on that day. On a child’ssecond birthday, family members put a
5 variety of objects on the floor around thechild. According to Chinese tradition, the firstobject that the child picks up tells you whatprofession the child will choose later in life.
3,5,7 For Japanese children, the third, fifth 10 and seventh birthdays are particularly
important. At this age, there is a specialcelebration called Shichi – Go – San (seven,five, three in Japanese) when children go tothe temple wearing a brand-new kimono. The
15 priest gives them special sweets, and theparents usually organise a party for theirfriends in their home.
15 In Argentina, Mexico and several otherLatin American countries, girls have a special
20 birthday celebration when they reach the ageof fifteen. After a religious ceremony, the girlsdance a waltz with their father and other boys.
18 Eighteen is the traditional ‘coming ofage’ – the age where you have the right to
25 vote, join the armed forces and (in manycountries), drink alcohol and (in the UK) buya house or become a member of parliament!
21 In many English-speaking countries, atwenty-first birthday cake often has a key on
30 top, or the cake itself is sometimes in theshape of a key. The key means that the youngperson is now old enough to leave and enterthe family home at any time they want to!
