Principal’s Message
Happy New Years PRE Families!
It’s 2020 and the start of a new decade. While the year is new, our commitment to excellence and providing your child with a quality school and learning experience remains the same. We hope that you had a wonderful holiday break and you and your family were able to make happy memories together. We hope your resolutions for the year last longer than the ones you made last year did. Encourage your child to come up with his/her own resolutions, so you can hold each other accountable to meeting your goals.
It was an eventful December for us as we had many Bright Spots to celebrate and close out the year:
Congratulations to our Robotics teams who participated in the State competition on December 7. Our First Lego League team and First Lego League Jr. team competed against public and private schools from across the State for a chance to move on to the national stage. Although our teams didn’t qualify, it was a tremendous learning experience for our students. Our advisors, Mr. Chang and Mrs. Perez-Mishima did a wonderful job working with the students and preparing them throughout the season. We look forward to making it back to the State competition and beyond.
While not a typical Bright Spot, the lockdown on December 11, provided us valuable feedback and information regarding our emergency procedures. It was a scary situation for our school, but we are proud of how everyone knew what to do, followed our procedures, and kept safe and calm. We will continue to examine and reassess our procedures to ensure we are doing all that we can to keep our school safe.
We hosted our annual PTA Holiday Event on December 13. The gingerbread house making was the highlight of the evening with our families expressing their creativity and ingenuity in decorating their houses. Thank you to all the families who joined us and celebrated the coming holiday season.
Our PRE Science Olympiad team placed third overall at the State Science Olympiad competition on December 14. This was our second year of participating in the Science Olympiad after a long hiatus. Thank you to our parents and advisor Mrs. Lum for helping and guiding our students to reach this accomplishment.
On December 14, PRE participated in the annual Aiea Holiday Parade. We had several of our student groups represented in the parade such as: CPOs, Student Council, and The Squad. Staff members: Ms. Lee, Ms. Tawata, Ms. Lorian, Mrs. Yoshida, and administration also braved the rain and wind to help spread the holiday cheer to our community in the parade. We are looking forward to next year’s parade and will hopefully have more student and staff representation. Thank you to all of the families and friends who cheered PRE on in the parade.
Principal’s Message cont’d
Under the direction of Ms. Barnes, our performing arts and dance team showcased their talent at our assemblies in December. This is Ms. Barnes’ first year with our students, but the work of our students and dedication of Ms. Barnes, will surely lead to more exciting performances in the second semester. We look forward to seeing what they do next.
Our library was able to meet their goal for the book fair in selling 1400 books. We were happy to see so many students reading and being able to find something that peaked their interests. Thank you to all who visited the book fair and supported our library program.
In December, PRE said mahalo and goodbye to one of our teachers:
SPED teacher, Mr. Dane Fujinaka will be heading back to the Dominican Republic to resume his coaching duties with the Toronto Blue Jays minor league affiliates. He filled in admirably after Ms. Bill left in October. We thank him for his work with our students and teachers and wish him the best of luck.
We are now in the third quarter and that means we will ramp up our preparation for the Standards Based Assessments

Here's an article from National PTA "Our Children Magazine"
The Importance of Parental Involvement for Student Success B y H i l a r y S c h a r t o n
The link between parental support and student achievement is so robust that school districts often have policies to encourage it, and various funding sources for schools have been tied to it, but there are some activities that move the needle on student achievement further than others.
While teacher skill and communication is an important ingredient for student achievement, there are several other influential factors outside of school that play a role in student success. In fact, research shows that supportive behavior from parents or guardians helps tremendously.
We know that volunteering in the classroom and chaperoning field trips are great ways to show an interest in your child’s education, however, the following four activities are most impactful.
1. Parent Tutoring
A 2008 study found that training parents to teach their children to read was far more effective than either teaching parents to listen to their children read aloud or having parents read aloud to their children.
Another study showed similar results for every content area and age level. Parent tutoring increased student achievement on both criterion and norm-referenced tests, no matter how long the tutoring sessions were or what kind of instruction or modeling was provided to the parents.
2. Supporting Homework
The effect of parent involvement in homework has been more mixed. One research report analyzing this topic found a strong link between increased achievement on almost any measure when parents regulate homework time and help students when they struggle.
PTA cont’d
However, significant results were only found for elementary students and were not seen when parents simply monitored homework.
3. Communicating Expectations
The most generalizable impact has to do with parental expectations. Two reports from 2005 and 2009 looked at a variety of parent behaviors and found that parental expectations and parenting style were significant predictors of higher achievement in both elementary and middle school.
4. Academic Socialization
While most family engagement research cites significant results in elementary grades, academic socialization has significant correlations with higher student achievement in middle school. According to a 2009 study, academic socialization included parents’ expectations for academic achievement, fostering academic aspirations in children, discussing learning strategies, and planning for children’s academic future.
Putting it All Together
Woven through each of these parent behaviors is the importance of clear and consistent communication. Open lines of communication between parents and teachers are essential to student success. So often, parents receive a lot of handouts and emails only to file them away and forget about them. It’s important for parents to review what teachers send home and ask clarifying questions when needed.
Hilary Scharton is the vice president of K-12 Product Strategy for Canvas (the learning software used by thousands of teachers/schools nationwide.) She’s also a former educator.
See you guys in 2020! Have a great Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Cecile Goo

This quarter, Choose Love's focus is on forgiveness. Students will learn that forgiveness means choosing to let go of anger and resentment toward yourself or someone else, to surrender thoughts of revenge, and to move forward with your personal power intact. They will learn healthy ways to express anger and to calm themselves down. Forgiveness has been shown to improve relationships, decrease anxiety and stress, lower blood pressure, lower the risk of depression, and strengthen immune and heart health. Cheers to living a healthier life!
