PRE PRODUCTION

Research• I researched the best selling and most used camera and it was.

• These cameras were outselling DSLR cameras, therefore this is a market that needs reviving desperately. Even with lower prices for DSLR cameras sales are falling.

• Falls by 20% reported by mirrorlessrumors.com• http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/2016-january-cipa-report-digit

Researched Advert• Sony Xperia• Because the advert fitted a style I was looking for,

showing off the photography element that could be achieved with that phone, but I wanted to use a DSLR to its full potential. Using the Manual settings, lenses etc to their full potential

• A Mobile Phone advert I thought was the perfect one to research because the mobile phone has the best selling camera on it

• I didn’t research apple because apple has a very brand unique way of marketing.

Page 4: Pre production presentation

Type of Production (treatment)• Canon Advertisement • Advert will use photography features to to show off the

capabilities of the camera• Use real photographic techniques and photographic

methods to take an image that you couldn’t on an iPhone (main rival and market I’m trying to breach)

• Cinematic genre as it will feature long exposures and short exposures over a short period of time with a clip being planned about every 3 seconds

Page 5: Pre production presentation

Requirements• Production equipment and Prop equipment, both to be

rented and filed on budget sheet• Transport costs calculated• Actors and Crew both need release forms confirming their

role in the advert• Risk Assessments for every location • Recces

Music • For Music I wanted an upbeat track in the background but nothing too over the

top and distracting from what is going on in the advert. This meant a higher emphasis on bass type music with a solid riff in the background that doesn’t escalate much and doesn’t make itself appear more important than the visuals

•  • My first idea was a riff like that of the song Sweet Disposition by temper trap.

The opening 9 seconds features a riff that sounds what I feel would fit for my advert well. However, as this track is a copyrighted track I will have to scourer the internet for a copyright free version which features the same riff.

• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN7HQrgakZU : The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition

• On Youtube I came across an copyrighted free instrumental for background music. That features a track that is almost the same pace as Sweet disposition and also changed tone at almost the same place. It is an almost identical replica with a strong bassy undertone and upbeat rhythm that I feel will be perfect for the advert

PRODUCTION FACTORS

Page 14: Pre production presentation

• There are 7 Scenes in total, taking place in 7 locations. There are 2 shots per scene.

• The first shot is the actor in the action of taking the video/image

• The second shot is what the actor has taken a photo/video of

• Call sheets will be made closer to the time of shooting to record accurate information about the location.

Page 15: Pre production presentation

• For Every shot with an actor in, Equipment Needed:• Sony A58, 18-35mm f1.8 Lens, Monopod, Spotlight for

dark shots.• Props Needed: Canon 1200D, Tripod, Costume

requirements

Page 16: Pre production presentation

The following includes• Storyboard• Recording schedule• Recce• Risk Assessment

Page 17: Pre production presentation

Scene 1 Shot 113/11/16

Camera and tripod are set up so that they are looking to the right of the frame in the right third of the screen. The actor comes in to the left of the frame and looks through the viewfinder. And looks through the viewfinder for a few seconds. The shot is a close up shot with a low aperture blurring out any lights in the background to draw attention to the foreground image.

Page 18: Pre production presentation

Scene 1 Shot 29/11/16

Camera is set up so that it is in the middle of the lane where cars are driving from the bottom of the frame to the top and then curve off to the top left. It must be dark enough for short long exposure bursts approximately 1 to 2 second bursts with a high aperture and relatively low ISO to reduce noise but also be correctly exposed Equipment: Sony A58, Monopod, 18-35mm Lens

Page 19: Pre production presentation

Scene 2 Shot 112/11/16

Camera is set up on a tripod in a low angle state, the legs must be as small as they can be and the lens must be as wide angle as it can be so that the low angle is shown. High shutter speed due to the weather conditions being bright and sunny therefore reducing noise and lowering the aperture to get a more crisp and better quality image. Focus on the man taking the photos.

Page 20: Pre production presentation

Scene 2 Shot 26/11/16Camera has the 55-200mm lens mounted on it for the changes in distance that the dog is running. Get the maximum shutter speed and shoot on JPEG so that the card can write more photos to it than it would if the files were RAW files. Highest shutter speed and maximum aperture that the exposure will allow so that more of the dog when it is running is in focus reducing any inaccuracies and faults with the focus of the image. Equipment: Sony A58, 55-200mm lens

Page 21: Pre production presentation

Scene 3 Shot 113/11/16Camera is set up at night, use spot lighting in the actor and camera but leave all remaining areas dark and show the night sky to show the audience that it is indeed night time. If possible try to zoom in onto the actor and the camera slowly but only if the effect looks smooth and does not cause any blurring, movement of the sensor or anything that will ruin the image. I would advise shooting on the 18-35mm f1.8 for this shoot

Page 22: Pre production presentation

Scene 3 Shot 27/11/16Camera is set up and left overnight, specific requiremnts of this shoot are shutter speed of 30 seconds, Aperture of f11 and ISo of 800. Leave pointed up and put the right upper intersect of the frame on the north star approximately. Use a release shutter remote to trigger the images and leave exposing for a few hours so that a long period of time where the stars will be shown is able to be seen when the photos are compiled. Equipment: Sony A58, 18-35mm Lens, Tripod, Shutter release remote.

Page 23: Pre production presentation

Scene 4 Shot 113/11/16Set up camera and tripod so that the flower is framed in the left side of the frame and the right is vacant so that the actor can move into the frame and take the photo making this scene complete. The angle of the shot will be eyeline and will be shot on the 50mm f1.8 lens with a low aperture to attract attention to the foreground area that requires attention and removes any distractions in the background

Page 24: Pre production presentation

Scene 4 Shot 210/11/16Free hand shot of the flower form a high angle to aid the continuity of the previous shot. High shutter speed and a low aperture and minimum ISO are required to bring out the detail and texture of the image and make it much more interesting than just a picture of a flower. Light will be natural light from the mid day point and take in excess of 20 images. Equipment: Sony A58, 18-35mm Lens

Page 25: Pre production presentation

Scene 5 Shot 111/11/16Use a high angle shot of the actor setting up the camera and the people walking around the public area of the shot at the bottom. Use this shot free hand or otherwise in public it will be impractical and we will be extremely noticeable. Aim to take the shot steady and zoom out of the framing shown on the storyboard so that image stabilisation can be done in postproduction. Frame so that the camera man is setting up the bottom left of the screen and the people walking fill up the rest of the frame. Use 18-35mm Lens for this with a low aperture to attract attention to the cameraman and disassociate the blur of people walking in the background.

Page 26: Pre production presentation

Scene 5 Shot 211/11/16

Use a tripod for this or a monopod for slight movement, try out both techniques and final decision will be made in post production. Set shutter speed on the image for anything between 0.5 and 1 seconds. Maximum aperture and up to 800 ISO so that the aperture can be higher. Have the actor framed in the middle of the screen and use a remote shutter to take multiple images, take any in the excess of 20 for both tripod and monopod shots. Equipment: Sony A58, 18-35mm lens, Monopod

Page 27: Pre production presentation

Scene 6 Shot 18/11/16

Frame shot so that the prop camera and tripod are in the left frame of the screen and the chair is frames in the right side. Turn off the lights and use the studio lighting equipment and put in a direct line behind the chair and the camera so that the lighting is on the camera and then the actor as he moves from camera to chair. Use maximum aperture and if too dark, use a follow focus to concentrate the focus on two direct areas of the screen that need adjusting when the actor moves. Equipment: Sony A58, 50mm f1.8, Tripod, Lighting

Page 28: Pre production presentation

Scene 6 Shot 28/11/16

Take the photo with the lighting staying as it is to continue continuity. Take excess of 20 photos for decision in post production. Focus the image on the actor and frame it so that the eyes are on the top third of the image (eyeline) Equipment: Sony A58, 50mm f1.8, Lighting.

Page 29: Pre production presentation

Scene 7 Shot 114/11/16

Frame the image so that the resting table for the camera is in the bottom left third of the image and have the actor walk off into the distance, out of focus. This is key so that the logo and graphic can work on the image. As these fade in as the actor fades out of focus. Use lighting on the camera to attract attention to it and already focus the lens so that when the camera is placed down the prop camera is in focus. Equipment: Sony A58, 18,35mm lens Monopod

Page 30: Pre production presentation

Scene 7 Shot 214/11/16

Frame the image so that the resting table for the camera is in the bottom left third of the image and have the actor walk off into the distance, out of focus. This is key so that the logo and graphic can work on the image. As these fade in as the actor fades out of focus. Use lighting on the camera to attract attention to it and already focus the lens so that when the camera is placed down the prop camera is in focus.

Post Production factors• Editing will be contrast editing, this will help the cuts be

more obvious and make the advert have an effect of longevity because of how many contrasts there are, it means that I can fit more content into the advert. The pacing will be fast and matching the voiceover so that the two go hand in hand and work together. The advert will cut straight in and then fade out to black on the final scene as it is also set in night and features the actor walking away.
