“SITTING PRETTY”- AAA Chair Auction
“Have a chair” we say to our guests. Now you might offer your visiting friends a special place to sit.
September 17 is the date for AAA’s first “Sitting Pretty” Chair Auction. Many local artists have paint-
ed and donated chairs for you to bid on.
Proceeds will be specifically directed to the Sum-mer Arts Festival to keep kids’ art programming free in Allegany County. Bidding will begin at $25 each.
The Wellsville Creative Arts Center will host this exciting auction on September 17
starting at 5:30 pm. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served while
you peruse the incredible variety of
brightly painted chairs. Watch for
these “one-of-a-kind” artistic chairs in shop windows all over town.

Allegany Arts Sponsors Guitarist
Peppino D’Agostino
Hailed as a “guitarist’s guitarist” and one of the best
composers among guitarists” by Acoustic Magazine,
Peppino D’Agostino composes, arranges, and some-
times sings in both English and Italian. Voted Best
Acoustic Guitarist in 2007 by Guitar Player, his mu-
sic reflects Brazilian, Irish, country, blues, ragtime,
jazz and classical!
The Concert will be Friday September 25 at 7 pm.
Friday evening “entertainment seekers” will not be
disappointed.

Joyce Carol Oates to Visit Wellsville
Joyce Carol Oates, New York State native and prolific author with
over 100 books published (best-selling novels, short stories, poems
and memoirs) will speak at the Nancy Howe Auditorium October 2 at
7 pm. Preparation for her visit began with a talk last month about
Oates and Emily Dickenson, and viewing of the movie “We Were the
Mulvaneys”, based on her book, will occur September 28 (6:45 pm.)
The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and Houghton
College, which will hold a reception for the author after her talk -
from 8 to 10 pm in the Library’s Main Reading Room. A limited num-
ber of tickets are available from the Friends at $35 each. Live chamber
music will also be showcased.
Seating at 7 pm in the Nancy Howe Auditorium is free and overflow
patrons may watch on closed-circuit TV in the Exhibition Room.
Special programs about Joyce Carol Oates’ books for children and
youth, three book club sessions and other activities will take place in
September and October. Contact the Library to learn more.

Wellsville Art Association
The Wellsville David Howe Library will
again be the venue for the Wellsville Art As-sociation Show. Titled the “Member’s
Show”, entries will be taken September 3
and 4, with a Reception on September 10.
The last day of the show is September 26.
WAA “Featured Artist” this year will be
Pat Shannon Gay. Her show will open Octo-
ber 5 and run through the 31st, with a pub-lic reception October 8 from 5:30-7:30 pm.
All artists are invited to enter the Mem-
ber’s Show. You simply need to pay a mini-mum fee and bring your work (framed, with
safe hanging wires) to the Library Exhibi-
tion Room on the
above dates.
Paintings, collage,
sculpture, photog-raphy: any art
work is sought.

ASSOCIATION
The Allegany Arts Association, a non-profit (501c3) founded in 1982, promotes
participation in the arts by all citizens of Allegany County. The Association provides
arts programming and a variety of arts
experiences for all ages and is supported by individual and corporate members and part-ly by a grant from the NYS Council on the Arts Decentralization Re-grant Program with
support from Gov. Andrew Cuomo & the NYS Legislature and administered by the Cat-
taraugus County Arts Council.
Allegany Arts Newsletter is published quar-
terly. We welcome news releases and photos about cultural activities in the county. (Note:
Any views reported are not necessarily those of the
AAA Board.) The next deadline is November
18, 2015, for the December, January & Feb-ruary 2015-16 issue. Advertisers pay only
$25 per issue or $75/year (4 issues) in ad-
vance. (Single ads). Double ads are $150 for
four/year.
We work together with the David A. Howe Library, Allegany Artisans, the Wellsville Art
Association, The Fountain Arts Center, The Wellsville Creative Arts Center and many

Belfast Braids will again hold classes to teach you to make rugs from your old wool skirts and blankets. Meeting Friday evenings September 11 and 18, and October 2 and 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 in Belfast, the class fee is $100 and all equipment except your own wool
is supplied.

Allegany Artisans Tour—October 16, 17, 18
New for 2015, some Allegany Artisans will begin the Studio Tour with a Friday
evening reception. There are 35 studios lined up with 42 working artisans who will
be on hand for the regular Studio Tour Saturday and Sunday, but a select group
will welcome you Friday, October 16.
Find extended hours in the Alfred area at Len Curran’s, The Alfred Village Farm,
R.S. Lang Art Pottery and Eugenia Frith Meltzer. In Allentown, Don King will be
open and in Almond you will find a new studio, Funkensteins.
In Andover, Tufty Ceramics and Walker Metalsmiths will be open and in Angeli-
ca you will find a Friday-night welcome at the Three Clay Sisters' Studio, or go
toward Belmont and find Kay Brooks also open.
Other Friday open studios include A Stone's Throw Pottery, Auntie's Place and
