A Note a bout th is Book

I did not write t his book. These Gems ar e in Sai Sa tchar ita. I mer ely kept

log of them for sadhana while reading the Satcharita. I am further

document ing and publishing the same as a sadhan a a nd I pray tha t t hese

Shri B.V.Narasimha Swamy, in his Sai Baba Ashtothra says Sai Baba is

S ulabh a Dhu rlabhaya. Sa i is easy t o gra b while difficult to cat ch. While

he h as been easy to grab t o his beloved devotees su ch a s Sh ri Bha ra dwaja

Master, Shri Ramachandra Chaitanya Swami and Shri C.B. Satpathiji

(and Baba went to them), He has been eluding me and has been difficult

to catch. Only Nishta (Faith) and Saburi (Patience) are needed, so He

says. This sadhana is for the purpose of keeping my mind focused on Him

an d He is m y sole refuge.

Everything tha t you rea d here is from Satchar ita. I have used the En glish

Adap ta tion of Sai Satcha rit a by Na gesh V. Gun aji as my sour ce. My

Baba on Pr ecious Gems in Sat cha rita

Sai Baba said Hemadpant, I fully agree with writing

of Satcharita. Steady your mind and have faith in My

words. If My leelas are written, avidya will vanish and if

they are attentively and devotedly listened to, the

consciousness of worldly existence will abate. Strong

waves of devotion and love will rise up and if one dives

deep into My leelas, he will get Preciou s Gems o f

    Knowl edge.

    (Chapt er 3)

The description of Baba s pur e fam e an d th e hea rin g of th e sam e with lovewill destroy the sins of the devotee, and therefore, this is the simple sadhana

    for at ta ining salvation.

    (Chapt er 3)

Sai Baba, the ocean of mercy, says Hemadpant, favored him and the

result of th is is Sat cha rita .

    5. Baba said that no quest could be successfully carried out on emptystomach.

    6. Baba can come to us (a) in dreams (b) in the form of Himself or of anySadhu (c) in the form of His picture. These are all clear indications ofHis gra ce an d Baba coming t o us.

    Baba in His own words

    Chapter 3:

Baba t o Shama , who conveyed Hem adpan ds request to write th e Sat cha rita

If a ma n u tt ers My na me with love, I shall fulfill his wishes, increa se his

devotion. If he sings My life and deeds, I shall beset in front, back and

    both sides

If anybody sings m y Leelas , I sha ll give him infinite joy an d cont ent men t.

It is my special characteristic to free any person who surrenders

completely to Me and who remembers Me and meditates on Me

    constantly

I shall draw my devotees from the jaws of death. If My stories arelistened to, all diseases will be got rid of. Think, meditate and assimilate

th em. This is the way t o success an d ha ppiness

The simple remembrance SAI SAI will do away with sins of speech and

    hearing

Baba said one da y after n oon Arat i to all devotees All you d o is kn own to

me. I a m t he inn er r uler of all. I envelope all creat ur es. I am th e cont roller

of the sh ow of Universe. Noth ing will harm who tur ns his a tt ention to Me

Do your dut y, stea dy your min d an d ha ve fait h in My words

Baba to Mrs. Tarkad Mother you have fed me sumptuously up to my

throat, my afflicted pranas have been satisfied. Always act like this and

th is will sta nd you in good st ead (Cha pter 9)

(Mrs. T arkad fed a h un gry dog a piece of bread and Baba got it!)

    Baba to Mrs. Tarkad S i t t i n g i n t h i s Ma s j i d I s h a l l n e v e r s p e a k

u n t r u t h . Take pity on Me like this. First give bread to the hungry and

    then eat yourself. R e m e m b e r t h i s w e l l. The dog, which you saw before

    meals and to which you gave the piece of bread, is o n e w i t h M e , so also

oth er creatu res ar e one with m e. I am roaming in th eir form s. He who sees

Me in all these creatures is my beloved. So abandon the sense of duality

and distinction and serve Me as you did today

(We have to remember that Anna Dana is dear to Baba and should always

    Babas love for His devotees

By grinding wheat, Baba stopped cholera spreading in Shirdi. Baba will

grind our mental and physical afflictions- He does it day and night. If we

hold on to Him we ar e sure t o be saved. (Chapt er 1)

Women folk of Shirdi sang Sai Leelas with devotion while doing their

    daily chores. (Cha pter 1)

(Are these songs recorded an d ava ilable today?)

The grand miracles of Sai Baba are interesting and instructive to His

devotees. They rem ove their s ins a nd a fflictions. (Cha pter 2)

Baba s da rsh an cha nged t he devotees th ough ts, t he force of previous

actions abated and gradually non-attachment and dispassion achieved. It

is on account of merits of previous births that such a darshan is granted. If only you see Sai Baba, all the world becomes and assumes the form of

Sai Hema dpant (Chapt er 2)

Baba had motherly love for his devotees-peculiar, extraordinary and

disinterested. The child knows or cares nothing. (We are the children of

Baba. It is u p to him to take care of us!) (Cha pter 3)

There will be no dearth of food or clothing in my devotees home Sai Baba

    (Chapt er 6)

In th e case of Sai Ba ba, if a devotee r eally longed t o offer a nyt hin g to Him,and if he afterwards forgot to offer the same, Baba reminded him, or his

friend about the offering and made him present it to Him. He then

accepted it and blessed the devotee (Chapter 9)

(Exam ples includ e Babasaheb Tark ad forgetting to offer prasad t o Baba at

his Bandra residence and Baba reminding Mrs. and Master Tarkad at

    Shirdi)

(Also Govind Balaram Mankad forgot offering milk pedha sent by Mrs.

Tarkad that Baba reminded, took and ate right away, while Mankad was

in m ourn ing (Ma ila!))

Baba incarnated for the welfare of His devotees. Supreme in knowledge

and surrounded by divine luster, he loved all beings equally. He was

unattached. Foes and friends, kings and paupers were the same to Him.

For the sake of His devotees, He spent His stock of merits and was ever

    alert t o help them (Chapter 12)

Baba Go, go quickly, be calm and unperturbed. Stay comfortably atBelapu r for four days. See all relatives and t hen retu rn to Shirdi to Mrs.

(Baba overrulin g N anasah ebs pressure on wife to retu rn a s soon as seeing

    his sick son)

Baba used to press mangos on all sides so skillfully that when a person

sucked it, he got all the pulp and could throw away the stone and skin.

Pla nt ain s were peeled off by Baba, ker nel given t o devotees wh ile He kept

th e skin! (Chapt er 12)

(What love for devotees? Isnt He telling us that he gives us happiness and

    keeps our sorrows?)

Baba to Rut tonji Shap ur ji Wadia Allah Accha Kar age. Do not be worried

and your bad days have ended. Baba gave Udhi, placed his hand on

Rut tonjis hea d an d blessed him.

Than e, Dasganu performed a kirta n. One Mr. Cholkar , a devoted listener

at the kirtan, was so moved that he prayed to Baba for a permanent job.Cholkar mentally told Baba that he would come to Shirdi and distribute

suga r can dy in Baba s na me if he got t he job. Cholkar got t he job by

Babas grace. Now Cholkar ha d to ta ke a t rip to Shirdi an d distribute

sugar candy. To save for the Shirdi trip, Cholkar started having tea

with out suga r. Then , as per h is vow, Cholkar cam e to Shirdi, fell at Baba s

feet and said that he was very pleased with His darshan and his desires

were fulfilled th at day. Then , without an y ment ion of Cholkar s vow, Baba

casually said to Bapusaheb Jog Give him cups of tea fully saturated with

    sugar (Chapt er 15)

(Baba knows everything. He knows the untold story of Cholkar having tea

without sugar for saving money. Baba wanted by His words to create faithand devotion in Cholkars m ind )

Baba encouraged good thoughts and gave teachings for self-realization.

He taught his devotees not only in their waking state, but also through

visions an d drea ms. (Cha pter 18/19)

Baba opened th e eyes of devotees int ellect, sh owed t hem divine beau ty of

th e self an d fulfilled t heir ten der longings of devotion. Baba s cont act, serving Him and regarding Him, as our guru, is the proven way to open

our int ellect. (Chapt er 18/19)

(S ee how B aba guid ed thousan ds of people with love, such as Mr. S ath e,

Kakasaheb Dixit, etc. Shri Sainathuni Sarat Babuji clarifies that Mr.

S athe in Chapter 18/ 19 is not H ari Vinayak S athe, a famous devotee of

    Baba)

After noon Ara ti was over, Sai Baba came out of the Masjid and sta nding

on its edge, distributed Udhi to the devotees with very kind and very

loving looks. The Bhaktas also got up with equal fervor, clasped His feet,

and standing and staring at Him, enjoyed the shower of Udhi. Baba

passed ha ndfuls of Udhi into the pa lms of th e devotees an d ma rked t heir

foreheads with Udhi with His own fingers. The love He bore for them in

His heart was boundless. Then He address Bhaktas as Oh, Bhau, go and

Pa ssing away in Sh irdi and in Babas presence is a sur e way to gain

Blessed is Shirdi and blessed is Dwarakamai where Shri Sai lived and

whom He obliged and for whom He came such a long distance. Shirdi wasa small village first, but it attained great importance on account of His

contact and became a Tirth, holy place of pilgrimage. Equally blessed are

the womenfolk of Shirdi, blessed is their whole and undivided faith to

Him. They sang the glories of Baba while bathing, grinding, pounding
