Data Science At eHarmony — A Generalized Framework For Personalization

Improving User Experience By Predicting Article Virality
Jonathan Morra Director, Data Science EHARMONY
Real-Time Analytics Of Big Data
The Washington Post newsroom publishes more than 1000 pieces of content a day. What if it was possible to predict which stories, out of all that content, were likely to go viral? Editors could target those stories to add photos, videos, links to related content and more, in order to more deeply engage the new and occasional readers clicking through to a popular story. Sam Han, engineering director of data science at The Washington Post, will explore how the media organization is approaching predictive virality for the benefit of its readers and will discuss features, algorithms and evaluation methods of a tool currently in development.
Data Science has always been a focus at eHarmony but recently many more business units have needed data driven models. In order to serve our modeling needs eHarmony has developed and open sourced a data transformation and model representation framework called Aloha. Aloha allows eHarmony to decouple engineering, model evaluation, from data science side, model creation. We have also embraced Apache Spark as an efficient way to create Aloha models for multiple business needs. This has allowed rapid modeling in areas such as personalized match making, models for our “What-If” product, fraud detection models, and email timing models.
Data scientists are dedicated to finding meaningful and often unexpected insights from data. This can be as simple as creating a trend-line on a spreadsheet to designing a schema in a relational database allowing for efficient discovery. What alternatives are out there when data sets are too large for a spreadsheet or relational database? Often the insights we want require full scans of massive data sets and are more complex than a simple SQL query can answer. Hadoop and similar batch big data systems have robust APIs and mature developer communities that fit this niche well for enterprise needs. However there is a class of problems that require data too large to store or have a hunger for insights faster than you can store the data. In this presentation I will review tools for this class of data and the problems they try to solve.
