The cost of producing Vetset has risen
significantly with postage being a
significant part of the increased cost.
To make some savings the TSACT
committee is considering sending it
via email. We know there are a num-
ber of our members who prefer a hard
copy. However we need to explore
this avenue.

President’s Report by Graham Smith
Well here it is nearly halfway through
2017 and I ‘m doing my next report.
I would like to congratulate our mem-
bers who won their events at the first
Goulburn Railway Tennis Club Tourna-
ment held in March. The tournament
was well organised by Alex and David
Ridley and their committee. Tennis
Seniors ACT dominated the field and
we gained some new members over the
weekend.
The Narooma Seniors Tournament was
also held in March with a number of
our members attending and coming
home with wins and runner-up prizes.
Some also went to the West Wyalong
teams tournament with success. Well
done to those members coming home
with prizes..
Our 47th ACT Tennis Seniors Easter
Tournament was held from the 14-17
April and we attracted players from all
states. This gave our members the op-
portunity to play against some highly
ranked players and at times it was diffi-
cult to decide which match to watch.
Pat Moloney and Gail Jones again spent
many hours collating entries and mak-
ing sure the events were to the re-
quired format. A massive commit-
ment from these two at this time of
the year. Over the weekend they
gained support from Anne Haycock
and also Barbara McCluskey, two
volunteers who continue to provide
their services and it is greatly appreci-
ated as they take on any job they get
given. We also must thank Emma
Walter and Mark Crawley from the
Umpire’s Branch as they are very
necessary officials required by us to
run the tournament.
The Easter Tournament was the last
hoorah for Miroslav Pisa and Karmila
Pisova. They will be returning to their
home country in the not too distance
future. They have been great support-
ers of our twilight pennant and round
robin tournaments as well as other
senior tournaments in the ACT and
around the country so it is sad to see
them leave
Tennis Seniors will be holding a
Christmas in July dinner at U&CO
Café Kaleen (see details on page 3).
Once again I like to thank our sponsors;
U&CO Café and Supa Express in Ka-
leen and Con Kounnas from the Health
Shop at Jamison for their kind dona-
tions for our Easter Raffle. If you are in
the Kaleen or Jamison areas please pop
in and purchase some items and tell
them that you are from Tennis Seniors.

90 day reflection of the new TSA Executive
Clive Wilkinson, President TSA on 15 April
Easter is often a time for reflection and
that is appropriate for the new TSA
Executive that was elected 90 days ago
at the AGM in Adelaide. Reg and Enid
ensured that the transition was very
smooth, which has made it so much
easier for the new committee to get up
and running. Peter Dighton moved into
Enid’s role as Vice-President, Leanne
Scott came on to the Executive, Peter
Froelich and Pat Moloney continued in
their roles as Treasurer and Secretary
and I took over from Reg as President.
It has been a very productive 90 days
ensuring business as usual activities
continued and the new plans were put in
place. Here are some of the highlights
that have occurred in the last 3 months:
Creation of the ‘TSA Business
Plan’, which has been supported by
the Tennis Seniors State Divisions
and Tennis Australia. It provides
the direction for Tennis Seniors
over the next 3 years and our in-
tended areas of focus.
Creation of the ‘One Team’
concept to leverage all of the
great things that are happening in
individual states to the betterment
of all. This is so critical moving
forward because as ‘One Team’
we can achieve so much more.
Development of a Communica-
tion Plan to promote Tennis Sen-
iors throughout Australia.
TSNT is back on board. We are
very pleased to see Tennis Sen-
iors Northern Territory is back in
the fold after a long absence. We
will do everything we can to be
able to support them.
Compiled detailed feedback on
‘Australian Carnival & Individ-
ual Championships’ for lessons
learned to continue to improve
our premier event.
TSWA State Championships
was upgraded to ITF3, which I
hope will encourage players from
all over the country to compete in
what is a great event.
Successful ‘Oceania’ tournament
once again under Peter Froelich’s
leadership, ably supported by Reg
Trevaskis and the team.
Relationship with Tennis Austra-
lia continues to grow as both par-
ties work closer together for the
benefit of seniors tennis.
85’s Team to compete in the
World Teams event in Florida.
It is very pleasing to briefly reflect on
these achievements, but the job is just
beginning. The next 90 days will see us
focus on executing the Communications
Plan to sell the ‘Tennis Seniors Value
Proposition’ to prospective new mem-
bers and the further development of the
‘One Team’ approach for us all to work
closer together.
I wish you and your families a safe and
happy Easter and best of luck to the
players playing in the ACT State Cham-
pionships, which are currently being
played in Canberra over this long week-
end.

Following the failure of the twilight
pennant to receive sufficient entries in
2016-17, Bill Scott has suggested ex-
ploring other possibilities for a regular
competition for seniors. He has sug-
gested Thursdays, and the Tennis Sen-
iors ACT committee has suggested Sat-
urday afternoons as a second possibil-
ity. It is envisaged that the competition
would be unisex.
The format of such a competition has
not been decided. It could involve
teams and be run with a fixed draw over
several weeks, or it could be a self-
contained round robin competition once
each week or each fortnight.
A fixed draw over several weeks would
provide a feeling of being part of a team
and would represent a definite commit-
ment. However experience with the
twilight competition has found that
finding reserves becomes very difficult
for the organisers on some weeks. Also
there is a loss of interest for teams that
perform poorly in the earlier parts of the
competition.
A round robin on a fixed day does not
involve the same level of commitment
but it does provide flexibility and
avoids the reserve problem. The exact
format of a round robin, the way people
would enter, and when entries would

close before each event is still up for
discussion.
At this stage there has been no consid-
eration of which courts would be used
for the competition. This will depend
on the level of interest and court
availability on Thursdays or Satur-
days.
If you would like more seniors tennis
and believe you would participate in
this sort of event, please contact Bill
Scott by Wednesday 31 May to ex-
press your interest. In doing so please
express your availability and/or pref-
erence for Thursday or Saturday, your
preference for a fixed draw competi-
tion or a regular stand-alone event,
and any other ideas which will help a
more concrete proposal to be devel-
oped.

The 2017 World Young Seniors Teams
and Individual Championships were
held in Cape Town, South Africa from
19 March to 1 April. Young Seniors
include the 35, 40 and 45 age groups.
The teams event was held in the first
week with France winning 4 of the cups
(the M35 Italia Cup, the W35 Suzanne
Lenglen Cup, the M35 Italia Cup, the
M40 Tony Trabert Cup and the W40
Young Cup) and runner up in the other
two Cups. The Netherlands retained the
M45 Dubler Cup and Spain retained the
W45 Margaret Court Cup.
Australia had 4 teams – three mens and
one womens. The teams finished 7th in
the M45 Dubler Cup, 8th in the M35
Italia Cup and the W45 Court Cup and
11th in the M40 Tony Trabert Cup
In the Individual events held in the sec-

50th Wedding
Anniversary
Anne and Peter Haycock celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary on 29
April. They were married in St Johns
Anglican Church, Young on 29 April
1967. They celebrated the event over
a drink and nibbles with a large group
of friends, family and fellow past and
present tennis players at Next Gen-
eration in Lyneham. As the inaugural
president of Veterans in the ACT said
he hadn’t seen a number of the peo-
ple for years.
Anne is a life member of TSACT
after many years of administration,
playing and volunteering. Peter has
been a strong supporter often seen at
dinners and tournaments (in between
fishing).
Anne as per normal did most of the
talking at the celebration before cut-
ting the cake. We were all a bit wor-
ried about some of the dates she
quoted especially when she said they
were married in 1969. Peter did get a
few words in, although at times under
Anne’s guidance. Anne likes her red.
Towards the end of the evening Anne
was seen walking around with her
own bottle.
As the notice in the paper said,
‘congratulations 50 vintage years’.
Page 4
Second prize went to Sheila Daly.
Other winners were Heather McKay,
John Dickson, Jean Penny, Helen Wor-
land and Barbara Mapley. We did well
with sponsors and our thanks goes to
the following sponsors for their gener-
osity in donating the prizes - U&Co,
Superbarn Kaleen, Jamison Health
Food and Leisure Link for the racquet
and tennis bag.
On the Saturday night an informal din-
ner was held at the Southern Cross Club
Jamison where approximately 55 play-
ers and friends turned up and had an
enjoyable meal and evening.
Our thanks and gratitude are extended
to all those people who assisted us prior
to and during the Tournament. In par-
ticular Gail Jones who continues to do a
great job as Tournament Secretary in
accepting and recording entries and
assisting in the management of the tour-
nament.
Also to Anne Haycock who volunteered
to help and ended up putting in full
days chasing up players and directing
them to their courts, Barbara
McCluskey for successfully selling raf-
fle tickets, Graham Smith our barman
and Peter Breugelmans for obtaining
money from players.
Mark Crawley was our White Badge
Referee (an ITF requirement). Mark
has been our referee for a few years
now and does a very good job in refe-
reeing and administrating the tourna-
ment. Also Emma Walter the court
supervisor who was forever cheerful in
supervising the matches and helping the
players sweep, line and water the courts
after their matches.
All in all another successful Easter
weekend.
ACT Senior Open Tennis Tournament by Pat Moloney
What great weather we had for our
Easter tournament held from 14-17
April. It really enabled the running of a
successful tournament.
Our Easter tournament has maintained
its ITF Grade 2 category as a result of
last year’s successful tournament which
attracted a number of highly ranked
players. This year has also attracted
highly ranked players and so the Grade
2 category should be maintained for
2018.
Apart from the ITF ranking, the clay
courts are an attraction for players to
compete before going overseas, in par-
ticular the Australian Representatives.
In general players have expressed fa-
vourable comments to playing on the
good clay courts.
This year the tournament attracted 174
players which was 14 more than last
year. In the IPIN events the field in-
cluded 25 past and present Australian
team representatives and so provided
some strong and competitive tennis.
The tournament is essentially in two
groups – the IPIN group and the non-
IPIN group. The trend over the last few
years is that our local players tend to
play the non-IPIN events. The format of
these events has the advantage of allow-
ing the players to play particular events
on particular days. It also provides ex-
tra events for players losing in their
IPIN events.
This year in the IPIN events ACT play-
ers found the going a bit strong, how-
ever we had some winners - Narelle
Raftery 55 singles, doubles and mixed
(a great effort); Leonie Ainsworth 60
singles (her first major singles win -
(photo right) and Phil Higgs and Pat
Moloney 70 doubles. Runner ups were
Phil Higgs and Pat Moloney (photo
above) in the 65 doubles (becoming
doubles specialists); Tim Harris and
Leonie Ainsworth in the 55 mixed
doubles.
The IPIN events provided some inter-
esting highlights. Of the 12 singles
events 10 were won by seeded play-
ers. The clay courts provide for some
interesting and long matches. There
were 40 matches lasting over 100
mins with the longest being a
women’s 55 singles match lasting just
over 200 mins. Fortunately they went
on mid-morning and ended up having
a well deserved late lunch.
There were 13 non-IPIN events (14
last year) comprising 57 players. Ten
of these events were won by ACT
players and twelve runner-ups by
ACT players. It's good to see partici-
pation and success from ACT players.
All the tournament results are listed
on page 5.
First prize in
the raffle this
year went inter-
state to Alan
Gooch from
WA. He came
a long way to
win first prize!

Gold Coast 2018 (Q18)
The 2018 Australian Seniors Teams
Carnival and Individual Championships
will be hosted by Tennis Seniors
Queensland on the fabulous Gold
Coast. It is a wonderful place to spend
a holiday and play a little tennis while
you are here.
From the 56 km of famous surf beaches
to the enchanting rainforests of the hin-
terland National Parks, the Gold Coast
contains some Australia’s most beauti-
ful places to visit. But just as impor-
tant, its array of world class tennis fa-
cilities are ideal for the more mature
tennis player.
Courts and facilities
We know that there were some adverse
comments about the condition of some
courts used for SA17 in Adelaide. The
courts for Q18 will be in great condi-
tion. For the Carnival, we will be
using facilities at Gold Coast Seniors
Club, Miami Grass, KDV tennis
(clay) Tweed Heads, Surfers Paradise,
Banora Point and Burleigh. All courts
are artificial grass with the exception
of KDV.
The Individual Championships will be
played solely at the recently expanded
Pizzey Park complex (GCSC and Mi-
ami). There will be adequate shower
and toilet facilities and we will have
scoreboards on all the courts for the
Individuals. Lots of ice will provided.
Further information on the court loca-
tions can be found on the dedicated
website www.tennisseniors.org.au/qld/
q18.
Accommodation
If you are thinking about going, you
should be thinking about accommoda-
tion. A list can be found at
www.tennisseniors.org.au/qld/q18.
Nominations for ACT Teams
Nomination forms for the ACT teams
will be sent to all members probably
around July. So can either organise
your own team or nominate separately
and you will be put into a relevant team.
The age groups for the teams are 5 year
groupings for both men and women.
We do not know the cost per person yet.

ACT Senior Open Tennis Tournament - Results

2017 World Masters Games by Joanne Adams
Four local tennis enthusiasts, Pauline
Downes, Grant Woodbridge, Adrian
Blackeby and myself got together last
year and worked out a plan to travel to
NZ to compete in the largest multi-sport
event in the world, the 9th World Mas-
ters Games held in Auckland from 21-
30 April. With 48 competition venues
across Auckland and the Waikato, and
28 sports being played, we were excited
by the opportunity to be amongst more
than 27,000 athletes of all ages and dis-
ciplines.
The tennis was held at one single world
class venue, Albany Park, and the facil-
ity was impressive with 6 indoor courts
and 15 outdoor courts plus a range of
other amenities including a café and
bar. As this was our first experience
playing in the World Masters and not
knowing what to expect, we played it
safe, took pot luck and entered both the
B and A Grade events.
This proved to be a wise decision with
the B grade participants of a standard
similar to our local Division 1/2 pen-
nant and the A grade standard ranging
from Division 1 pennant to ex world
ranked professional athletes, including
Pavlina Nola who achieved a career
high ranking of 68 in the world and
Alistair Hunt who is an ex NZ Davis
Cup player, to name but a few.
On the first evening of the games,
Adrian and I arrived late due to a de-
layed flight, so we unfortunately missed
the Opening Ceremony. However,
Grant and Pauline who were on earlier
flights, managed to get to the dazzling
event at Eden Park in the heart of Auck-
land CBD.
They informed us that they witnessed a
ceremony which showcased the unique
culture and heritage of New Zealand, as
well as participating in the celebratory
athletes’ march with other tennis par-
ticipants. The ceremony also featured a
powerhouse performance from
Maori performing arts groups
and bands performing familiar
tunes for locals and overseas
participants.
For the first few days of the
tennis, my age division was not
scheduled to play, so I enjoyed
having full days touring some
of the stunning regions of
Auckland which included a day
trip to Waiheke Island to soak
in the atmosphere of the seaside
villages and discover the local food,
wines and beaches.
During the time that I was indulging
myself on various islands, Grant and
Adrian were busy slogging it out in
their round matches of the B doubles,
making it through to the final. Despite
a hard-fought final on the indoor sur-
face, which featured Grant’s lethal
cross court forehand and Adrian’s
sharp volleys on the net, they ended
up with the silver medal.
Pauline also had no time for being a
tourist, as she was kept busy playing
every single day, progressing steadily
through her singles rounds, making it
to the final where she won a silver
medal.
I was fortunate enough to make it
back from my sight-seeing in time to
watch Pauline’s singles final, which
was one of the most inspiring tennis
matches I had ever witnessed. Pauline
rallied for what seemed like hours
against her fierce Canadian opponent,
some points lasting for well over 20
shots. Pauline really did Australia
proud showing sheer grit and determi-
nation, a ‘never give up’ attitude as
well as complimenting her opponent
and of course, her ability to have a
good laugh and enjoy the match all
the way through.
Finally, on the 5th day of scheduled
play, I had my first match, an A grade
singles match at the indoor centre.
Unfortunately, the nerves quickly set
in and I was quickly defeated by my
tough opponent. However, I soon got
myself mentally prepared and more
settled for my next A grade singles
match, where I was more competitive
and won in straight sets against an-
other Kiwi.
My third-round match proved too
difficult, knocking me out of conten-
tion to get through my pool to the next
stage of competition, but on the positive
side, playing in the singles did give me
plenty of practice to head into the A
mixed with Adrian to face ex world
number 68, Pavlina Nova, and her part-
ner. We had lots of fun but could only
manage to win a few points against the
star of the tournament and lost the
match without winning a single game
despite our best efforts. To sum up,
Adrian and I ended up winning one
match in the rounds of the A mixed and
lost two matches.
Pauline and I got through with the best
results from our pool in the B grade
ladies doubles to play off a top pairing
from a different pool. With Pauline’s
consistency, awesome net play and de-
termination combined with my occa-
sional backhand drives, we were able to
win a silver medal.
We had a chance to proceed to the
grand final and play for gold, but a rain
delay and a time draw re-shuffle, meant
we had to forfeit the match, as I had an
early flight back to Australia the next
day which was the final day of the
games – sorry Pauline!
I would definitely love to play in an-
other World Masters Games one day.
The next one for those who might be
interested is to be staged in the Kansai
region of Japan in 2021.
My tips if you are thinking of going are
as follows; book and plan plenty of time
in advance, ensure you get the dates
right so you don’t fly back home on the
last day just in case you actually do
make the grand finals, find a couple of
lovely friends to go with, and keep an
open mind as the Games is all about
new challenges, new experiences and
new friendships.
Our time in NZ provided us with
memories to last a lifetime and has in-
spired me to continue on my own per-
sonal journey, spurred on by the life-
long love of the sport .
I would also like to acknowledge that
we were not the only locals to partici-
pate in the games. We ran into the
lovely Mark Hardy, who also played in
the A grade events and despite not pro-
ceeding to the finals, looked like he was
thoroughly enjoying himself as much as
we were. I don’t believe there were any
other locals that went, but please accept
my apologies if I have omitted mention-
ing anyone else.

Charity Day
Each year the Tennis ACT Mid Week
Ladies hold a Charity Day Tournament
to raise funds for a nominated charity.
This year it was held on Thursday 4
May for HOME.
It’s not a house, it’s HOME.
HOME provides 24 hour supported
accommodation for people living with
mental illness and was the first of its
kind to open in Australia.
The range of mental illnesses suffered
by the residents is from medium to
high. Each resident has their own one
bedroom self contained unit. HOME
provides the support to go with it.
The ladies appear to be able to pick
their days. It was another perfect au-
tumn’s day – sunny and little wind. 62
players supported the tournament play-
ing either ladies, mens or mixed dou-
bles in a round robin format at Belcon-
nen and Melba Tennis Clubs. These
clubs donated their courts for the morn-
ing. TSACT donated the balls as well
as its members supporting through play-
ing, volunteering to assist and through
donations.
Afterwards all the players gathered at
Belconnen Tennis Club along with an-
other 12 people for a sausage sizzle
accompanied by a variety of salads pro-
vided by the ladies and washed down
with a glass of wine donated by Shaw
Vineyard Estate out at Murrumbateman.
Thanks go to the Hawker Butchery for a
good rate on the sausages and to Norm
Burmester for volunteering to cook 160
sausages - with some assistance from
H e l e n C o l e ma n a n d B ar b a r a
McCluskey (hiding behind the sau-
sages) and Anne Haycock keeping her
eye on things - see photo below.
Money was also raised through a raffle
with prizes donated by Lee Taylor (a
pair of Solar Bat sunglasses valued at
$165), Merran Hunter (framed calligra-
phy valued at $120), Kurtz Hair Design
(hair products valued at $100), Shaw
Vineyard Estate (one dozen bottles of
wine), HOME (a basket of sweets)
Ainslie Football Club ($60 dollars in
meal vouchers), Southern Cross Club
($50 meal voucher), Queanbeyan
Leagues Club ($50 meal voucher). A
number of players present and absent
donated prizes and money.
Prior to the handover of the cheque,
the President of the Mid Week Ladies,
Helen Greenup thanked her commit-
tee and all the people and clubs in-
volved in organising and running the
day before introducing TACT’s new
CEO Kim Kachel.
Sue English from HOME received a
very pleasant surprise when Kim
handed her a cheque for $2,332. The
ladies certainly continue to raise the
bar with this being the first time over
$2,000 has been raised. Keep up the
good work ladies.
In accepting the cheque, Sue outlined
what happened at HOME and that
HOME relied on donations and the
money from residents. HOME does not
get any government grants. Residents
pay rent and pay for their own utilities
for their electricity and their phone. “If
people do move back into the general
community then they need to take re-
sponsibility to pay rent, pay for their
groceries and other expenses. So it’s
very much about enabling people who
have a medical illness to take responsi-
bility for these things”.
Back to the tennis, the winners were
Mixed Doubles Group A (Belc) –
Linda Valente/Neville Rodwell
Mixed Doubles Group B (Belc) – Jan
Aubrey/Neil Lynch
Ladies Doubles (Melba) – Jean
Penny/Penny Moss
Ladies Doubles (Belc) – Linda
Gorrell/Sandy Bainton
Mens Doubles (Belc) – Anthony

Mixed Doubles (Melba) - Peter
and Marie Grealy
The major prize winners in the
raffle were Colin Holgate (Solar
Bat sunglasses), Chris Lee (the
framed calligraphy), Janet Bruce
(hair products) and Barbara
McCluskey (basket of sweets). All
those with a sweet tooth or a liking
for chocolate know where to go -
but they will have to contend with
Gerry first.

The organisers are considering intro-
ducing a handicap system to both
make for a more exciting competition
and also see the spoils shared among a
wider number of players. It is just in
the embryonic stages at the moment.
In glorious weather, we had a big roll-
up of 20 players for our 30 April tour-
nament at Weston Creek.
We had two divisions of 12 (Div 1)
and 8 (Div 2) respectively. For the
first time, we instituted a handicap
system to try and even out the scores
and prevent the same players winning
nearly all the time. We felt that it
probably did not change the results as
far as winners and runners-up were
concerned but feedback was positive.
The handicaps will be adjusted as
results over a number of tournaments
provide more reliable data.
The organisers will keep a keen eye
for members playing well below form
in order to attract a ‘light weight’ at
subsequent tournaments.
We had 3 new faces and another two
who we haven’t seen for a while
There was a very strong roll-up for our
tournament held on 19 March at Bel-
connen Tennis Club. The weather was
fine but unusually humid.
Twenty players entered but one person
pulled out at the last minute leaving us
with an odd number of players. Many
phone calls later and Margie Sellwood
came to the rescue on Sunday morning.
Thank you to Margie for that. We de-
cided on two groups of ten and endeav-
oured to divide the stronger players as
evenly as possible between the 2
groups. This was not an easy task.
Adrian Blackeby won his group with 23
games from his 4 sets, followed home
by May Howard with 21 games. Both
are very regular winners as readers will
observe. Joanne Adams won the bronze
medal with 19 games. All three set a
very tough challenge to match, let alone
beat.
In the other Group, Linda Valente, who
we haven’t seen for a while, was in
good form after returning from the
Asian Circuit to take home the Moet
Chandon with 25 games, while the
much travelled jet setter, Miroslav Pisa
took the silver medal and the Dom
The Wagga Seniors Tournament was

which was very welcome. One of those
new starters, Mark Hardy played very
good and consistent tennis to take home
the Grange Hermitage in the first divi-
sion on 27 games. He was a back
marker also with a zero handicap.
Marilyn Walter was runner-up on 24
games, adjusted to 26 with her handicap
just shading Daniel Tang also on 24 but
adjusted only by one with his handicap.
Both were in very good touch and
jumped up the ATP rankings. Not
happy with his effort, Daniel headed off
for 18 holes of golf, again chasing big
prize money.
In the 2nd Division, Don Tucker headed
the field home with 26 games, adjusted
to 29 on handicap and headed home
with the Dom Perignon. `Second place
on 24 games adjusted to 26 on handicap
was Bill Scott, back after a long spell in
the back paddock and so escaped the
handicapper’s close attention. Bill had
to settle for 2nd prize which was a box
of the finest chocolates ever to come
out of Queanbeyan.
We will hope for another big turnout for
our next tournament on 21 May at a
venue to be advised.

Senior’s Moment
We all know we can be forget-
ful at times. But how would
you be with this one.
The organiser of one of the
men’s social tennis groups ar-
ranged for an earlier start (one
hour) so he could take his wife
to an appointment. All the
players were there at the ap-
pointed time but not the organ-
iser.
When rung he was home enjoy-
ing a cup of coffee. He had
forgotten he had changed the
time.

events were completed, a credit to
Gail Bates and the tournament com-
mittee.
Narelle had a good tournament win-
ning the 55 womens singles in a round
robin and losing the final of the 50
mixed doubles with Martin Warwick
(Vic) in a close battle with Ulrike
Deutsch-Watson and Peter Bilton
(both from Queensland) 4-6, 7-5, 8-
10.
Neville lost the final of the 70 mens
singles to Terry McLellan from
Queensland 6-4, 6-4. Neville playing
with Graeme Sticka (NSW) made the
semi finals of the 65 mens doubles
before losing to the eventual winners,
Ian Somers and Ian Gallagher, both
from Queensland.
Narelle Raftery and Neville Rodwell
went north to Brisbane for the Tennis
Seniors Queensland tournament (ITF3)
held at the Tennyson Centre from 31
March to 3 April. There were 132 play-
ers entered with 103 from Queensland.
Cyclone Debbie or at least her remains
well and truly wreaked havoc on Bris-
bane in the days leading up to the tour-
nament with a whole year's rain in one
day. This led to the clay and grass
courts at Tennyson being under water
on Friday although there was play on
the hard courts. The weather took pity
on the tournament with the hard court
events continuing at Tennyson over the
next three days and the clay court
events (65+) being transferred to the
synthetic grass courts at Wynnum. All
Brian Carmichael reports there were
just under 100 players at the Narooma
Seniors Tournament held 10-12 March
(our best year yet!). There were 3 days
of great weather and lots of happy
faces. A Trivia Night was held on the
Saturday which was very successful.
Thanks to all involved (players, volun-
teers, sponsors), hoping to do it all
again next year and I’m pushing my
luck and will also be back running
Moruya again in August so hope to see
plenty of Canberra faces then as well.

West Wyalong Teams - from Marilyn Walter
The West Wyalong Teams Tournament
was held on the weekend of 18-19
March which was the weekend after the
Narooma Seniors.
Rochelle Hogan, Cathy Mayer, Bever-
ley Roberts and Marilyn Walter made
the trip from Canberra. Bev and
Marilyn teamed up with Pam Crawford
(Tumut) and Helen Worland (Orange)
in Team Tumut in Division 1 playing
against Pat Woods' team from West
Wyalong, Julie Pratt's team from Syd-
ney, the youngsters from Goulburn and
Sal's Gals another local team.
Team Tumut were Division 1 winners
closely followed by West Wyalong who
had recruited Cathy Mayer for the
weekend. Cathy brought along her
mum Betty Jennings and also Anne
McTernan both ladies former keen ten-
nis players in the Canberra competi-
tions.
Rochelle Hogan teamed up with the
Forbes ladies to win Division 2 from
two local West Wyalong teams for a
good weekend of tennis.
The weather conditions were again
challenging. After the high tempera-
tures experienced last year we were
looking forward to cooler conditions
but this time around we had gusty
strong winds particularly on Saturday
which made playing tennis difficult and
balls were going all over the courts.
On Saturday night the organisers ar-
ranged a dinner and get together at the
local Metropolitan Hotel and a fun
night was had by all.
This tournament was well run, laid back
and family oriented in a friendly and
competitive environment, definitely
worth a visit on your tournament calen-
dar.

A hugely successful inaugural Goul-
burn Seniors Tennis Tournament went
off with a bang. The Goulburn Railway
Tennis Club and the Goulburn Tennis
Club jointly hosted this Tennis Seniors
NSW sanctioned tournament, over the
weekend of 31 March to 2 April.
There were 162 participants playing in
the tournament, in matches ranging
from men’s and women’s singles, dou-
bles, mixed doubles and combined ages.
All 12 synthetic grass courts at the two
clubs were utilised over the weekend.
The tournament ran over three days and
saw 130 of these players visiting Goul-
burn from many regions, including the
Central Coast, Southern Highlands,
Sydney, South Coast, Canberra and
Western NSW. Over 30 local players
also competed and helped make visitors
feel welcomed. There were 30 events,
some with multiple pools, due to the
overwhelming number of entries. 73
winners and runners-up walked away
with cash prizes. Some stand out play-
ers were Mick Gerstenberg (Goulburn),
Tim Harris and Leonie Ainsworth (both
from Canberra).
Many commented that they had not
seen an inaugural tournament run in
such a highly organised, professional
and friendly manner, with some saying
it was one of the best tournaments
they'd been to of late. One visitor from
the Central Coast said, ‘It’s great to see
Goulburn tennis, and Goulburn itself,
back on the map.’ Others enjoyed
reminiscing about playing in Goulburn
20, 30 and 40 years ago. The organis-
ing committee worked hard to ensure
the tournament highlighted the best of
Goulburn and that it would inject bene-
fits back into the local economy. Many
players stayed over the weekend and
enjoyed local tourist sights, shopping,
restaurants and bars during their time
off.
There were 72 people at the Tourna-
ment Dinner on Saturday night, hosted
by Gold Sponsors, the Goulburn Sol-
diers Club and Diggers by the Park. A
great evening with great food. Other
sponsors included Goulburn Toyota,
Ramsay Health Care, Best Western
Goulburn and Ganter Constructions, as
well as many local businesses donating
prizes for the tournament raffle. The
raffle was a great success with Errol
Neish, Graeme Hissey, Gina Brown and
Costas Kounnas walking away with
goodies. The support of all of the
above businesses played a huge part
in the two clubs pulling off a spec-
tacular event.
High praise came from Tennis Seniors
NSW officials and veterans who have
been playing this circuit for over 20
years. The joint vision, organisation
and comraderie between the two local
tennis clubs has ensured success.
Tournament Director David Ridley
said:
"It was a fantastic and exciting week-
end, with perfect weather and a great
opportunity for people to reconnect
and create new friendships. Everyone
has already said they’ll be back next
year for it. The committee will now
sit down to review the strengths of the
tournament, what can be improved
and if and when it would be held next
year. Players’ feedback is wel-
comed. We look forward to making it
bigger and better in 2018. Thank you
to everyone who attended and to all
the volunteers for making our first
tournament so much fun and so posi-
tive."
There were a number of Canberra
players amongst the winners and run-
ners-up.

2017 Oceania Senior Regional Championships
The Oceania Senior Regional Champi-
onships is a popular event on the Oce-
ania calendar and was again hosted by
Tennis Seniors Australia. It was held
from 9-13 March and based on the clay
courts at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis
Club in Melbourne. Due the high num-
ber of entries, four other venues were
used on Thursday and Friday.
Now in its fourth year the tournament
was open to players from all countries.
The number of players entering rose to
285 from 265 in 2016 and from 230 in
2015. There were entries from 8 coun-
tries other than Australia. Almost half
of the players were from Victoria (134).
NSW had 55 and Queensland had 44.
There were 11 players from the ACT.
Ros Balodis defended her singles and
womens doubles titles. Ros defeated
Brenda Foster (NSW) in the 55
womens singles final 7-5, 6-3 and
won the 55 womens doubles with
Leanne Swaysland (NSW). Ros and
Colin Holgate made the semi-finals of
the 55 mixed doubles losing a third
set tie break 10-8 to the eventual win-
ners.
It was pleasing to see Heather McKay
back in action. She won the 75
womens doubles with Jill Taylor
(Qld) and reached the semi-finals of
the 75 womens singles losing to Mary
Gordon in 3 sets.
Leonie Ainsworth and May Howard did
very well in reaching the final of the 60
womens doubles losing to Judy Buzza
(Vic) and Sara Goddard (NSW) 7-5,
6-3.
Phil Higgs was also another player we
hadn't seen for sometime. Phil made
the semi-finals of the 70 mens singles
and the 70 mens doubles with Pat
Moloney.
Overall, the competition was very
strong as would be expected and some
of the ACT players found it difficult to
progress in their events.
