Background
Approximately 2,800m2 Useable Floor Area (UFA) of new culture and events spaces are planned as part of the Union Court and University Avenue redevelopment. The Creative, Cultural and Events Strategic Brief will be the glue to a revitalised Union Court and University Avenue precinct where there is;
“always something on” and that is, “engaging and eclectic”.
The vision is to create a rich creative, cultural and events based precinct that can entice, engage and excite people both from the campus community and beyond it.
The plans for Union Court include, for the first time, a multipurpose cultural and events building that will mean the University is able to host conferences, symposia, public lectures and performances without having to constantly complete for space with teaching, or host major events in non-teaching periods. Additionally there will be a multipurpose cinema/theatre/tiered seating space. The development also includes new, dedicated state-of-the-art teaching space and student commons, this will increase the space available for events in non-teaching periods. There will be a series of pavilions ideal for smaller events like exhibitions, book-launches, seminars and receptions.
The multipurpose cultural and events building (events Hall(s) (circa 700 seats), cinema (circa 350 seats) and drama theatre (circa 150 seats)) will also provide a number of teaching delivery options.
The design team together with the development manager will explore a number of options with regards to the Events Halls space to maximize the flexibility, multi-use and investment performance of this space. This may include the total 700 person capacity being dividable into multiple rooms (3). Key considerations regarding this will be around probable cost increases and the acoustic performance of the space(s). The Union Court revitalisation will mean that the ANU will finally be able to build a substantial program of events across the entire year, providing a real opportunity to host joint activities with National Cultural Institutions and the ACT. The Culture and Events brief is a highly complex, grappling with many competing needs, multiple programmatic scenarios and diverse stakeholders and will respond well in design development when architects are commissioned.
A Design Working Group from a diverse cross section of the university community has been assembled to work on this brief and includes;
Director, SCAPA (Chair), Events & Public Lectures Co-ordinator, Comms & External Liaison Office, VIP Visits and Protocol Co-ord, Office of VC, President, ANUFG, PARSA, Campus Life Officer, Secretary, NUTS Student Association,

Description
Shared Lobby 500
(250m²)
Displaying the prominent corner entry onto Union Court this lobby is to serve a number of critical functions for the strategic positioning of Culture and Events at the ANU.
The lobby will serve not only as a meeting point, including VT to car park, it will also serve the Events Halls, Performance/Bar, Cinema and Drama Theatres and in turn double as its own events space.
Opportunity for inclusion of a dramatic digital exhibitions wall as part of the lobby that encourages broad public engagement with the University’s research agenda.
(Basis standing room only, assumes .5 sqm/person).
Large Events Hall 500
(750m²)
The proposed events and function space is a critical component due to the scale of space, the location of the space and its proximity to a number of other uses as well as the adaptability of the space (a key assumption is that this space is both multi-use as well as multi-function).
As a flexible space the hall and audience seating should be able to be configured as desired for each production/event/function.
This space must include a BOH and or marshalling area.
A multiform theatre can be reconfigured to change the presenter-audience relationship and the seat count. The space should also allow the seats to be removed to create a large, flexible flat floor area (assume automated Acromat for retractable seating with a high quality finish and look and feel).
Lighting and sound provision should also reflect the multiform use and multiform nature of the space.
Ideally the floor finish is conducive to indoor sports (badminton/basketball etc. including line marking for such indoor sports).
(this assumes a modern design using 1.10–1.20 metres from seat back to seat back and 550 – 600mm seat widths, 100 seats: 1.5m² including circulation and presentation).
Small Events Hall 200
(300m²)
A small drama theatre usually seats between 50 and 300, with an upper limit of perhaps 400. It often doesn’t have a separate stage house—meaning the stage is within the same architectural space as the audience.
Opportunity – deliver a multiform theatre can be reconfigured to change the presenter-audience relationship and the seat count. The space should also allow the seats to be removed to create a large, flexible flat floor area (assume automated Acromat for retractable seating with a high quality finish and look and feel).
(this assumes a modern design using 1.10–1.20 metres from seat back to seat back and 550 – 600mm seat widths, 100 seats: 1.5m² including circulation and presentation).
T H E A U S T R A L I A N N A T I O N A L U N I V E R S I T Y A u g u s t 2 0 1 6
Kitchen tbc A catering kitchen area is required (assume cool room, bar refrigeration, bar snacks and warming ovens only) to predominately serve the events halls and any events that may occur in the lobby.
Amenities tbc Male/Female/Unisex amenities to serve the building and all of this multiple venues.
Cinema Theatre 350
(650m²)
A 350 seat cinema auditorium with the following key design requirements; Total unobstructed, A stepped (stadium) seating arrangement, High quality seating, Access – a high standard of disability access is mandatory, Large screen – wall-to-wall screen, Black box interior, Air conditioning – high quality heating and cooling system, Projection – in-focus and flicker free projection complemented
by multi-channel sound based around a digital process such as Dolby Digital or DTS.
Area assumption basis 1.85m² per person for the cinema auditoria including (entry vestibule/sound lock) but excluding external circulation corridors.
Small Drama Theatre
150
(210m²)
A small drama theatre seating approximately 150 people with the stage within the same architectural space as the audience. This space will also be utilised for both Lectures and Talks delivered by ANU Events, Students and Teachers.
(assumes a modern design using 1.10–1.20 metres from seat back to seat back and 550 – 600mm seat widths, 100 seats: 135m²).
Small Performance Bar
190
(255m²)
A smaller more dynamic “club” space that can accommodate live music but also feel vibrant without organised events i.e. The Basement Sydney, Good God Small Club Sydney, Yoshis San Francisco, Ruby’s Melbourne.
A small little Jazz hangout/club where musicians can go and do regular jams in front of a small crowd, people could have a drink or bite to eat – could be a really cool hangout and great for School of music students to get experience.
Technology Components
Beyond the Cinemas Auditoria, the technology focus of this building is centred around wayfinding and “What’s On” as well as the lighting and sound requirements of the Events Halls.
