GENERAL DESCRIPTION

XGC (XICATO GALAXI CARD)

The XGC (Xicato GalaXi Card) is a small printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) that enables third party manufacturers to develop control devices that can participate as wireless nodes in a Xicato Bluetooth® mesh network. XGC is factory programmed with a universal firmware image that is customized by the device manufacturer (OEM) using Xicato XGC Configuration Tool software.

XGC can be configured to support one of three basic operating modes:

(1) single-channel PWM output with separate on/off control (“1ch dimmer”)

(2) 4-channel PWM output with individual channel control and master control (“4ch mixer”), or

(3) up to four ganged PWM channels controlled together by a single command (“4ch gang”)

Additional device types will be supported in the future.

PWM frequency is programmable by the OEM to meet the constraints of device hardware, and is applied uniformly but out-of-phase on each channel.1

The XGC Configuration Tool carries a software license that automatically programs a unique OEM code into the device. This code can be read by application and management software such as the Xicato Control Panel to uniquely identify the device manufacturer in the user interface. In addition, OEMs can configure device model numbers, serial numbers, and additional information into the device for recall by application software. The XGC Configuration Tool allows OEMs to export the mapping between their 2-byte integer model codes and their external model numbers and send the export file to Xicato for proper interpretation by application software.

XGC provides PWM signals that vary in duty cycle based on a commanded intensity value between 0% and 100%. The PWM output can be interpreted through external circuitry (i.e. by the OEM device) any way desired, and can be controlled by Xicato Control Panel software and/or by third party software that talks to the device either directly over Bluetooth or through the HTTP API of the Xicato Intelligent Gateway (XIG). For example:

• As a driver dimming signal, either a direct command to a driver, or one that is translated into a 0-10V analog or DALI command. XGC has been implemented this way in devices from at least 2 vendors.

• Four independent channel controls – set the master channel to 100% and then don’t use it for any further control input. XGC is being used today in this application.

• As a four-channel color mixer: four independent channels controlling color point with a master controller for intensity • Tunable white control – the scene control can be used to independently move two channels (or even two

independent devices) in opposite directions to achieve the desired color temperature. If using XGC in 4-channel mixer mode, the master channel can be used to adjust the intensity up/down. However, one note must be made about the master channel control: the intensity range on each channel is 0.1% to 100%. It will not increase the group intensity beyond the point that any individual channel is at 100%, nor decrease intensity below the point that any channel is at 0.1%. Once any channel hits 0.1%, no further dimming will occur except to turn all channels off. This is done to prevent the color shift that will occur if individual channels are turned off one by one as the entire group is dimmed.

• As an aperture control command, as for e.g. the LensVector product. The PWM signal can be translated by a third-party device into the native control structure for LV to widen or narrow the optical aperture, e.g. from 0% (no beam focus modification) to 100% (maximum beam focus modification). Or, two channels can be allocated to CCT control and two to LV control for x/y aperture control.

1 Note that duty cycle switch-off instants depend on the duty cycle commanded by software, and may occur simultaneously on multiple channels on a periodic basis as a sub-harmonic of duty cycle.

• As a shade control command, e.g. telling a shade controller to lower the shade to 50% between wide open and all the way closed.

• As a temperature control command, telling e.g. a thermostat to go to some percentage of the distance between set minimum and maximum temperature settings.

• As an audio sound level command… • Etc.! Xicato does not constrain in any way the way that the PWM duty cycle is interpreted in the end device.

Note that it is the responsibility of the external circuitry to deliver the desired end result (dimming level, color, lens aperture, shade level, etc.) from the XGC input. Xicato’s responsibility is to provide the requested PWM duty cycle(s) in response to Bluetooth control commands.

CUSTOMIZATION Xicato welcomes conversations with device OEMs that would like additional feature functionality, including alternative interfaces or other capabilities. Send an email to [email protected] to begin the discussion.

XGC FEATURES

FUTURE PROOF FORM FACTOR

Customers that adopt the XGC can rest assured that the product they build today will accommodate future evolutions of the XGC and be supported by Xicato for a minimum of 3 years (through 2021). Individual components and/or placement may change over time, but the overall dimensions as well as the component placement and BLE antenna keep-out area should remain unchanged.

BLUETOOTH MESH NETWORKING

The XGC-LCI-U supports the Xicato Xbeacon Bluetooth mesh protocol today and will evolve to support the new Bluetooth mesh standard. With excellent radio transmission power and receive sensitivity, it provides an outstanding link budget for reliable point-to-point and mesh communication.

PROGRAMMABLE PERSONALITY – ONE INVENTORY FOR MANY DEVICE TYPES

One XGC SKU supports multiple programmable personalities, model numbers, serial numbers, and more, minimizing OEM inventory.

TEMPERATURE SENSING

Temperature sensing is built into the Bluetooth module on the XGC, to enable monitoring of the conditions under which the PCB is operating. The XGC reports temperature over Bluetooth for monitoring by local or remote devices.

CONFIGURABLE ADVERTISING POWER AND INTERVAL

Depending on your application, XGC devices can be configured with different transmit power settings and intervals to increase data granularity, or to conserve power and bandwidth. All configuration of the XGC can be performed using the Xicato Control Panel software, the Xicato Intelligent Gateway (XIG), or using compatible software from third party vendors.

XGC-LCI-KIT Xicato GalaXi Card, Load Control Interface, Starter Kit

PROGRAMMABLE TYPES XGC-LCI-U supports two control modes:

1. a single channel PWM output, configurable from 100 Hz to 60 kHz, and a single on/off output that can be used to turn external circuitry on/off or indicate that the PWM output is active.

2. 4 independent PWM output channels operating at 1.6 kHz per channel. The frequency is the same for all channels, but the duty cycle for each channel can be controlled independently.

PINOUTS

Single Channel mode Four-Channel mode

Pin 1 VCC (+3.3V DC)

Pin 2 VSS (GND reference for +3.3V)

Pin 3 PWM output (see note 4) PWM output, channel 1 (see note 4)

Pin 4 Unused (see note 3) PWM output, channel 2 (see note 4)

Pin 5 Unused (see note 3) PWM output, channel 3 (see note 4)

NOTES: 1. Noise filtering is provided on the board for the BLE radio, but there is no on-board regulation 2. The card cannot be hot plugged. If the card is hot plugged it will almost certainly be damaged. 3. These pins should not be connected to anything off the card. Damage or unanticipated behavior may occur. 4. PWM frequency is programmable between 100 Hz and 60 kHz

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE The XGC is a low-voltage component that is intended to be integrated into a device. Certification is the responsibility of the device manufacturer. The Bluetooth radio meets FCC and international regulations (e.g. CE/RED) with regard to transmit power and bandwidth utilization.
