Despite ongoing challenges, we have achieved successes in tobacco control and we have learned lessons in the areasofresearch,policyandpractice.Alloftheseexperienceswillserveuswellasweworktowardsthegoalofreducingtobaccouseto5%orlessby2035.Inlookingbackonouraccomplishments,panelistswilldiscussopportunitiesandbarrierstoadvancetobaccocontrolinCanada.

YOUTH VAPING, TOBACCO USE AND THE EVOLVING NICOTINE MARKET IN CANADA: PATTERNS OF USE AND POLICY IMPLICATIONSThesessionwillexaminetrendssince2017inyouthvaping,smoking,anduseofothernicotineandtobaccoproductsinCanada,usingdatafromtheInternationalTobaccoControl(ITC)YouthTobaccoandVapingSurvey.Thefindingswillexaminechangesacrossarangeofnicotineproducts,withafocusonthee-cigarettemarket,includinge-cigarettebrands,nicotinelevels,andindicatorsofdependence.DatafromEnglandandtheUnitedStateswillalsobepresentedtoexaminetrendsinyouthnicotineuseunderdifferentregulatorycontexts,includingnicotinelimits,flavourrestrictions,andmarketingrestrictions.

Thefindingshavedirectimplicationsforfederalandprovincialpoliciessurroundingnicotineandtobaccoproducts,suchashowexistingandfuturepoliciesmayimpactyouthuse.Thefindingsalsohaveimplicationsforresearchmonitoringtheproductmarket,includingbrands,useofnicotinesaltproducts,andemergingproducts(e.g.,IQOS).

FIRST NATIONS, INUIT, AND URBAN INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY-LED APPROACHES TO COMMERCIAL TOBACCO REDUCTIONThissymposiumwillprovideanoverviewofthedevelopmentandimplementationofcommunity-basedinitiativesthataimtoreducenon-traditionaltobaccouseinIndigenouscommunitiesinOntario.Thesessionwillincludeadiscussionofworkdoneinlocalcommunities(variouslydirectedtowardyouth,teensandadults)aswellasspecificcommunities,includingpre-andpostpartumwomenandtheirfamiliesandthe2-Spiritcommunity.Lessonsthatsupportthelocaldevelopmentandimplementationoftobaccoreductioninitiativeswillbeshared.Theconceptofacommunityofpractice(CoP)framedaround“thoseinterestedinreducingtheeffectsofcolonization,mediatedthroughcommercialtobacco”willbediscussedasoneapproachthatmayhelptofacilitaterelationshipsbeneficialtoallparticipantsandadvancesharedCoPgoals.

LGBTQI2S+ YOUNG ADULT SMOKING CESSATION: EARLY FINDINGS FROM A MARKET ANALYSISThissymposiumwilldiscusspreliminaryresultsfromaninitiativeseekingtobetterunderstandthecomplexdynamicsofsmokingbehavioursamongLGBTQI2S+inthreepilotcitiesinOntarioandQuebec.Theresultswillinformthedevelopmentofasocialmarketingcampaignaimedatchangingthesocialclimatearoundsmokinginthispopulation.

Thistopicisanimportantexaminationoftobaccouseinadiverse,oftenmarginalized,communitywheresmokingiscommonlyusedasacopingmechanismandameanstoconnectwithothercommunitymembers.MembersofLGBTQI2S+communitiescontinuetohavehigherratesoftobaccouse,whileotherpopulationshaveeitherremainedthesameordecreased.Theprevalenceofcigarettesmokingwas35%forLGBTQI2S+youngadultsaged18to24comparedtojust23%forsame-agedcisgenderheterosexualindividualsinCanadain2014.
