HHS Strong Start Initiative

• Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has released a new grant program to reduce prematurity.

• Grant funding will total up to $43 million.

• Two strategies:1. Broad-based campaign to

reduce early elective deliveries

2. Funding opportunity for testing new approaches to prenatal care

Pre/Interconception HealthGoal: Increase health care providers’ knowledge, resources

and understanding of preconception health and improve pre/interconception health for consumers.

Key Projects:• Partnered on Interconception Care Project of CA (ICPC):

Postpartum visit guidelines and patient handouts for women with pregnancy and delivery complications now available on www.EveryWomanCalifornia.org.

• From 2008-2011, funded 3 successful multi-year preconception and interconception demonstration projects. Best practice toolbox in development.

• Currently funding 2 multi-year grants to Sansum Diabetes Institute and to Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento - addressing preconception and interconception health for diabetics and teens.

Bilingual curriculum designed for pregnant women and women of childbearing age in a supportive group setting to learn about having a healthy baby.
