Premiering October 12, 2014 Everyone grows old, but for women, that journey can carry unique biological and mental baggage. In this new 13-part series, Detroit journalist Desiree Cooper takes viewers around the world to hear the wisdom of 100-year old centenarians and medical experts to understand heart disease, cancer and other ailments. We’ll also discover the power of a nurturing mother and the value of lifelong relationships between women. For men, this series will help them help their loved ones. Embrace of Aging: The Female Perspective of Growing Old is the latest from Detroit filmmaker Keith Famie, who filmed the episodes on location, including Okinawa, Japan. Information on Famie’s previous series on aging from the male perspective and other films is available at embraceofaging.com. The series will air Sundays at 2:30 p.m. ET beginning October 12.

Everyone grows old, but for women, that journey can carry unique biological and mental baggage. In this new 13-part series, Detroit journalist Desiree Cooper takes viewers around the world to hear the wisdom of 100-year old centenarians and medical experts to understand heart disease, cancer and other ailments. We’ll also discover the power of a nurturing mother and the value of lifelong relationships between women. For men, this series will help them help their loved ones.

Embrace of Aging: The Female Perspective of Growing Old is the latest from Detroit filmmaker Keith Famie, who filmed the episodes on location, including Okinawa, Japan. Information on Famie’s previous series on aging from the male perspective and other films is available at embraceofaging.com.

The series will air Sundays at 2:30 p.m. ET beginning October 12.

The Embrace of Aging – women’s series Fall Schedule on Detroit Public Television

Episode 1: Sunday 10/12/14 - 2:30pm TODAY'S AGING WOMAN In this first episode we set the stage for 13-part series as our featured ladies and professionals all talk about what is means to age. "Embrace your age." What does that really mean for most women? This history of how we age has changed with medical advancements. But even with access to better care, women still outlive the men in our lives. Episode 2: Sunday 10/19/14 - 2:30pm CHANGES IN LIFE We’ve all heard that term as it applies to menopause. But our bodies aren’t the only things that are impacted. So are our life goals, our relationships and even our self-concept. We explore how breast and ovarian cancer affect us as we age. Several of our professionals offer their own views along with women who are living through the day-to-day changes. We begin the journey in this episode with the devastating diagnosis of cancer and how this can turn a woman's world upside down. Episode 3: Sunday 10/26/14 - 2:30pm FIGHTING CANCER We step into the lives of three brave women who are all living with breast cancer. Between doctor's appointments, chemo and radiation treatments, our medical professionals help us better understand what breast cancer is. Episode 4: Sunday, 11/2/14 - 2:30pm MEN AND WOMEN

In this episode, we hope to shed some light on how to grow old with your life partner—and still be in love. What role does romance play in our lives as we age? How does love affect our health? When couples live with mutual respect and remember to laugh, they can successfully grow old together - and it’s even better for their health! Episode 5: Sunday, 11/9/14 - 2:30pm SISTERHOOD

As women, we know that having close girlfriends is important. We learn from several of our professionals just why a close circle of friends can improve your health. No matter where you hang out with your friends—at home, in a book club, on the phone—you’ll surely

relate to these girlfriends as they climb high into the mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, hanging out on the beaches of West Palm or just enjoying dinner at home in Detroit. Episode 6: Sunday, 11/16/14 - 2:30pm DIABETES / ARTHRITIS Millions of women in America today have type-2 diabetes. It’s a preventable disease that’s directly related to lifestyle, eating habits and how little we exercise. We turn to the doctors to help us better understand what type-2 diabetes is. One woman shares with us her struggles with type-2 diabetes. Arthritis…just about anyone over 50 can relate to soreness in the joints. We occasionally pop a pill to relieve the pain. But what happens when the mild arthritis leads to the deterioration of the joints? With the advancements in joint replacement, women who once would have been confined to the couch can once again live their lives. We step into the O.R. as one woman goes through a total knee replacement. Episode 7: Sunday, 11/23/14 - 2:30pm MY BEATING HEART The number one killer of women is not cancer; it’s heart disease. This may be our most important episode. What you learn here could save your life. We step into the cath lab at the famed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. There we’ll find one of an increasing number of women undergoing a procedure for heart disease. Dr. Sharonne Hayes, cardiologist and founder of Women’s Heart Clinic at the Mayo Clinic, talks us through women heart care along with Dr. Kamala Tamirisa, cardiologist with the Northwest Ohio Cardiology Consultants. We spend a weekend with women from the national organization, WomenHeart. Episode 8: Sunday, 12/21/14 - 2:30pm DEMENTIA / CAREGIVING When asked what scares a person the most about getting old, the majority will say losing the ability to remember and recognize their loved ones. Because women live longer, we are more likely to be a caregiver of a dementia patient, OR a dementia patient ourselves…neither of which is easy. We take care of our children, and when we get older, we often end up taking care of our parents and spouses. Caregiving at this stage in life is one of our most difficult roles, as we try to cope with our own aging issues. Dr. Eva Feldman, Ph.D., Russell N. DeJong Professor of Neurology Director, Program for Neurology Research & Discovery at the University of Michigan Health System, teaches us about dementia & Alzheimer’s. Episode 9: Sunday, 12/28/14 - 2:30pm STAYING ACTIVE, STAYING STRONG Staying active and involved in community events can contribute to healthy aging. Join us as we go behind the scenes with the chair of a gala fundraiser for the Detroit Institute of Arts. Why

does she choose to take on such a responsibility? Women can be great multi-taskers. Taking on lots of projects may feel like it’s driving us crazy. But in reality, it might be keeping us healthy and engaged. What do the Mercury Masters, Border City Brawlers, Olympic skier Muffy Davis and 71-year old Brenda Badish all have in common? A never give-up attitude! Episode 10: Sunday, 1/4/15 - 2:30pm HAVING A PURPOSE Having a purpose in life could just be one of the most important secrets to aging healthy. We learn that being involved in a project or daily activity can benefit us physically as well as mentally. After losing her job, Joannee DeBruhl figured out how to use her passion for farming to feed others; Dr. Eva Feldman has followed her life’s mission for the last 25-years turning a job into a passion trying to cure ALS; Susan B. Eirich has found her life’s purpose in caring for injured, wild animals; Lori Bergemann has become a conservationist in Kenya, Africa. For many women, the golden years are the best for finally realizing a lifelong passion. Don’t put it off a minute longer! You may discover a new reason to greet each day, and you may also find a healthier you! Episode 11: Sunday, 1/11/15 - 2:30pm OKINAWA'S BLUE ZONE What if you could get on a plane and travel to a place where women live healthy and active well into their hundreds? Well, such places exist, and they’re called Blue Zones. Join us as we travel to the island of Okinawa, Japan where the combination of diet, exercise and community seem to make a world of difference in the lives of women. What is it about the way Okinawans eat that contributes to health and longevity? What is a "nutrient dense, calorie poor diet?" Let's learn how we can adopt the Okinawan diet into our own lifestyles. Episode 12: Sunday, 1/18/15 - 2:30pm HOLISTIC HEALTH We've known for thousands of years that holistic and alternative medicine have been crucial to women as they age. Western medicine is now realizing the serious benefits of holistic practices. In this episode, we learn about a variety of ways we can embrace aging without the trip to the pharmacy. We already know the health benefits of yoga. Let's listen to a few experts, and from a 95-year old yoga instructor, on why stretching and breathing is so good for our bodies. Episode 13: Sunday, 1/25/15 - 2:30pm LIFESTYLE / FINAL THOUGHTS What is it about the French countryside, where they can drink wine, eat bread and cheese and not get fat? Is there something in the air that allows French women to “age with attitude?” In our final episode, we travel to the home of Mireille Guiliano, well-known international author of "French Women Don't Get Fat, and "French Women Don't Get Facelifts," to see why she calls Provence her home. Closing Thoughts - I hope that what we have learned over the last thirteen weeks has inspired. Aging is mandatory. Aging well is a gift we can give ourselves.
