What makes the Sixth Form at Ridgewood School unique?

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award

Valued highly by both universities and employers, Duke of Edinburgh Gold is a highly prestigious, nationally recognised qualification. We offer all Sixth Form students the opportunity to take part in the Gold Award, irrespective of their previous level of achievement. The award enables students to develop a vast range of skills, both physical and mental, and they are supported by specialist, highly trained staff. Ridgewood School hosts the largest Duke of Edinburgh Award cohort within Doncaster and has a proven track record of great success.

Young Enterprise

Students involved with the Young Enterprise programme at Ridgewood have won almost 40 awards in just four years - an amazing achievement. The programme provides students with the opportunity to run their own business, source finance, manufacture a product and sell it to members of the public. Being part of Young Enterprise means students develop skills such as teamwork and leadership, as well as experiencing first-hand the challenges of launching and managing a successful business. Throughout the scheme, students work alongside large commercial businesses, providing them with a fantastic opportunity to network and create useful contacts.

PELP (Professional Educational Leadership Programme)

PELP provides an exciting opportunity for Sixth Form students to mentor younger pupils in specific subjects. This is a bespoke programme tailored to develop the skill set of Sixth Form students and enhance the academic progress made by younger students. Students are coached by a specialist team of teachers and members of Ridgewood’s Senior Team before embarking on a programme that has been designed by the student. The benefits of this scheme are immeasurable and include students developing their own leadership and communication skills as well as the reward of helping others.

Sports Leaders Award Level 3

For those studying PE at Sixth Form, there is an opportunity to take part in the Sports Leaders Award programme. As part of this scheme, students have the opportunity to lead on a particular area of sport, and to design and deliver sessions to others to help improve fitness. A vital qualification for any student that wants to pursue a career in a sport-related field, this award enable students to change the lives of others for the better through sport and is the perfect opportunity to gain valuable experience and stand out from the crowd.

“The expedition was

amazing. I’ve never been so tired mentally and

physically…but the support from staff was fantastic and I’ll never forget the

memories that were made.”

In addition to our outstanding academic results, we are extremely proud of the unrivalled enrichment and personal development opportunities we provide our students with. Please feel free to ask any of our staff for more information regarding any of the activities we offer; we are very happy to tell you more about how you can get involved.

National Citizens Service (NCS)

Ridgewood School is proud of having formed an exciting partnership with the Doncaster Rovers Club Foundation in order to provide students with opportunities to take part in the NCS programme. Students complete the scheme during the summer holidays and spend two weeks away from home; the first week involves a residential activity and the second week is spent volunteering within local charities. In addition to forging new friendships and collaborations, students can ‘give back’ to a community and develop a range of transferable skills that stand them apart from their peers.

Enrichment and Pastoral Support

Throughout their two years in the Sixth Form, students will take part in dedicated sessions hosted by a range of visitors from across the spectrum of employment and academia, including representatives from Russell Group universities, the emergency services, and Members of Parliament. In Year 12, the focus is on developing study skills and effective revision techniques. In Year 13, students are prepared for their chosen career paths with presentations from a range of universities (including Oxford, Cambridge, Leeds and Nottingham) and apprenticeship organisations. These sessions are followed up during dedicated character curriculum tutorials each day with students’ achievement tutors.

MOOCsIn addition to their scheduled lessons, students at Ridgewood School have the opportunity to complete a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). MOOCs are online courses offered by a variety of renowned universities from around the world, and enable students to access a variety of subjects. MOOCs enable students to experience university level study in a flexible and supportive online environment.

Camps InternationalNew in 2016 will be the exciting opportunity to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Tanzania, co-ordinated by Camps International. As part of the programme, students will volunteer for two weeks within a Tanzanian village, helping to develop vital infrastructure including schools, medical centres and houses. They will spend a further week taking part in a PADI scuba diving course, leading to their first PADI qualification. In preparation for the trip, students are required to take part in their own fundraising activities and support is offered to students at all stages of the process.

What is the internship programme?Students in Year 12 complete a week-long internship within a professional working environment and we are fortunate to have access to a wide range of internship providers from finance to the motor industry, and healthcare settings to education. We work closely with our students at all stages of the process to ensure that they are matched to the appropriate internship placement.

The internship scheme truly enables students to expand their horizons, experience the careers they wish to pursue and in some cases, provide opportunities for a taste of independent living. Vital relationships have been developed as a direct result of internships, particularly in the field of medicine where students have the opportunity to live away from home for a week whilst working at The James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough. Students are not confined to the local area for their placements, and some have taken this chance to complete placements in France and Spain. As well as providing students with a unique window into a potential future career, the scheme has also allowed them to establish key contacts and points of reference that they can use throughout their careers.

Alysha - Internship at

University of York

The internship scheme at Ridgewood caters for everyone. With the support of Ridgewood

staff, I completed a fantastic placement in the field of Astrophysics. Due to my internship, my

application to university stands apart from others, and I was able to network with

scientists in the field.

Jamie - The James Cook Hospital,

Middlesbrough

My internship placement gave me the privilege of meeting a range of healthcare specialists and allowed me to experience a week in the

lives of doctors and nurses in a busy hospital. My experiences strengthened my decision to

apply for medicine – and I’m pleased to say, I was successful.

Internship programme

Curtis - York Fire and Rescue Service

Working outside the local area gave me a valuable insight into how the Fire and Rescue

service operates within different areas. I visited a number of stations across the District of York and

got to see some of the training facilities first-hand. I believe completing the internship put

me in a stronger position when making my application to the Fire and

Rescue Service.

Elodie - Internship at Sorbies

Primary School, St-Etienne, France

Having the opportunity to work in a French primary school was fantastic for the development

of my language skills and I gained valuable experience working in a professional environment.

I believe I now stand out from the crowd as I can write about my internship in my personal

statement for university applications. C’était fantastique!

Hannah - Internship at Santander

Working in a banking environment provided me with a useful opportunity

to gain experience in the world of finance. The internship was well organised throughout and it really helped to

confirm my future career path within the banking industry.
