Executive Summary
SGS was contracted by Nussir AFA (Nussir) to complete environmental characterisation of tailings and
process waters generated from ore from the Kvalasund deposit located in Norway. The purpose of the
environmental test program was to assess the geochemical and toxicity potential associated with marine
disposal of the tailings material (F12 Comb Tls).
Rietveld x-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses determined that the F12 Comb Tls sample was predominantly
comprised of silicates and carbonates (largely in the form of calcite). Results of the whole rock and
elemental analyses confirmed the primarily silicate composition of the tailings sample. Significant levels
of Ca and Al and minor to trace amounts of K, Fe, Mg and Na were also observed. The very high loss on
ignition (LOI) value reported suggests the presence of large amounts of volatile species (e.g. hydrates,
hydroxides and carbonates).
Modified acid base accounting (ABA) test results suggested that the F12 Comb Tls sample is potentially
acid consuming. The non-acid forming nature of this sample was corroborated by the NAG test results which
reported no net acidity generated after aggressive oxidation of the sample.
Analysis of the synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) leachates and the EN 12457-3
extraction test leachates reported all World Bank controlled parameters, with the exception of pH in the
SPLP sample, at concentrations well within the specified limits. Although significantly higher metal
concentrations were typically reported in the modified SPLP and modified EN 12457-3 extractions (using
the artificial seawater as the leachant); it would appear that only very low levels of metals were released
into solution as the concentrations of most parameters did not increase largely from that reported for the
seawater blanks.
Sediment toxicity testing of the F12 Comb Tls solids using marine polychaete worms (Polydora Cornuta)
reported a 50% reduction in the growth of the test organisms. While the tailings sample failed the 10 day
marine amphipod test (Eohausorius Estuarius) with a 55% mortality rate, the F12 Comb Tls passed the
solid phase microtox assay completed on the Vibrio Fisheri bacterium.
Analysis of the F12 Comb Tls Decant (process water) and fresh and aged F12 Comb Tls Salt Water
Decant solutions (artificial seawater) reported all World Bank controlled parameters at concentrations
within the designated limits. Increasing levels of Cl, As, B, Ca, Mn, Mo, Se, Si, Sr and U and decreasing
levels of Al, Ba, Cd, Th and Ti were generally evident over the 56 day ageing test period.
Results of the particle size distribution analyses indicated that the F12 Comb Tls sample tested was
comprised primarily of fines with 78% of the sample passed the 200 mesh (0.075 mm) sieve.

Sample Descriptions and Test Methods
The following sections provide brief overviews of the samples received and the test methods included in
the environmental characterisation program.
1. Sample Descriptions
A single combined flotation tailings pulp sample (F12 Comb Tls) was received from metallurgical
department. The F12 tailings tested, which were determined to be identical to the locked cycle test
tailings (LCT-1) from the flotation test program (SGS project reference 12527-001), were considered to be
the most representative of plant response in a laboratory environment. The artificial seawater used in the
test program was generated by blending 493 g of Instant Ocean® with 17 L of deionised water.
2. Sample Preparation
Upon receipt, the tailings pulp sample was allowed to settle overnight prior to the decantation of a
process water sample for analysis. The pulp sample was then mixed for 60 minutes at 200 rpm to ensure
all solids were thoroughly recombined prior to the extraction and filtration of the solids on No. 1 Whatman
filter papers. Representative portions of the resultant filter cake solids were prepared for the proposed
geochemical and geotechnical testwork and analyses according to SGS Standard Operating Procedures
and the individual test method protocols. The solids subjected to sediment toxicity testing were blended
with a sufficient volume of artificial seawater to facilitate this testwork. The remainder of the filter cake
solids were subsequently blended (60 minutes at 200 rpm) with a volume of saltwater identical to the
volume of process water removed during the liquid solid separation (filtration) thereby generating a slurry
of tailings and seawater that maintained the original ratio of liquids to solids of the initial pulp sample.
While the seawater tailings slurry continued mixing, individual Day 0, 7, 14, 28 and 56 ageing test
charges were extracted. The fresh Day 0 tailings sample was allowed to settle undisturbed for 2 hours
prior to the supernatant being decanted and submitted for analyses.
3. Test Methods
The following sections provide a brief overview of the test methods included in the environmental
characterisation program.
3.1. Rietveld X-ray Diffraction Analyses
A representative portion of the sample was submitted for Rietveld XRD analyses in order to identify the
bulk mineralogy, crystalline assemblages and the relative proportions of the mineral phases (as wt.%). In
this method, x-rays are used to bombard a powdered sample. The x-rays, which penetrate a very thin

3
layer of the sample, are diffracted by lattice planes of minerals. These unique diffraction patterns were
used to semi-quantitatively identify the minerals contained within the sample. These analyses were
subcontracted to the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of British Columbia.
3.2. X-ray Fluorescence Whole Rock Analyses
Whole rock analyses were completed on the sample using a quantitative XRF method in order to
determine the elemental concentrations of the major rock forming constituents. This method quantifies
major elements present and reports them as oxides to permit a mass balance assessment against the
component of a sample that is amenable to oxidization (loss on ignition).
3.3. ICP-OES/MS Strong Acid Digest Elemental Analyses
The samples were digested using an acid mixture of HNO3, HF, HClO4, and HCl to obtain a near total
digest of the parameters being analyzed. ICP-OES/MS trace metal scans were performed to provide
quantitative analyses of the elemental components of the sample material. Analyses requested included:
Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sb, Se, Si, Sn, Sr,
Ti, Th, Tl, U, V, W, Y, Zn and Zr. Mercury analyses were completed by cold vapour atomic absorption
spectroscopy (CVAAS).
3.4. Modified Acid Base Accounting
The modified ABA test provided quantification of the total sulphur, sulphide sulphur, and sulphate
concentrations present and the potential acid generation (AP) related to the oxidation of the sulphide
sulphur concentration. The test method determined the neutralisation potential (NP) of the sample by
initiating a reaction with excess acid and then identified the quantity of acid neutralized by the samples
NP by back-titrating to pH 8.3 with NaOH. The balance between the AP and NP assists in defining the
potential of the sample to generate acid drainage. In addition, quantification of the extent of carbonate
mineral content permitted calculation of the theoretical carbonate NP.
3.5. Net Acid Generation Testing
NAG testing was conducted to determine the balance between the acid consuming and acid producing
components of the tailings. The NAG test initiated a reaction between the sample and concentrated
hydrogen peroxide in order to force complete oxidation and reaction of the acidity produced with the
neutralising minerals present within the sample. After the reaction ceased, the pH of the solution was
measured (NAG pH). The acid remaining after the reaction was titrated with standardized NaOH to pH
4.5 and the net acid generated by the reaction was calculated and expressed in units of kg H2SO4
equivalent per tonne. The NAG4.5 value is indicative of the contribution from free acid, Al and Fe.
Titration from pH 4.5 to pH 7.0 can provide additional information for sample characterisation as, under
Nussir ASA – Kvalsund Deposit – Project 12527-002
SGS Minerals Services
4
certain conditions, the NAG7.0 is indicative of the presence of metallic ions that consume alkalinity over
this pH range, such as Cu and Zn.
3.6. Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure
The major objective of the SPLP extraction is to determine the leachability of metals from solid samples
under acidic conditions such as those created by ARD or acid rain. For the Nussir sample, the SPLP
leachant was adjusted to a pH of 4.2 ± 0.05 (extraction fluid No. 1) through the addition of a 60:40 weight
percent mix of sulphuric and nitric acid to DI. The leachant was combined with the sample in a 20:1 ratio
and the sample container was rotated end over end for 18 hours. The resultant slurry was then filtered
through a 0.7 µm glass fibre filter and the leachate analysed for total metals based on the previously
noted suite of parameters. A modified SPLP test was also completed on the tailings following the same
protocol as noted above but using artificial seawater as the leachant.
3.7. EN 12457-3 Extraction Testing
The European standard EN 12457-3 extraction test is based on the assumption that equilibrium or near-
equilibrium is achieved between the liquid and solid phases under the pH conditions imposed by the
waste itself during the test duration. This two-stage deionised water batch extraction test, typically used
for materials with a high solid content and with a particle size below 4 mm, is completed at liquid to solid
ratios of 2 L/kg and 8 L/kg. The tailings were also subjected to a modified EN 12457-3 extraction using
artificial seawater.
After completion of the first (2 L/kg) liquid to solid extraction (6 hours), the liquid phase was separated
from the solids by filtering through a 0.45 μm membrane filter. The liquid phase was subsequently
submitted for ICP-OES/MS analyses while the residual solids were re-eluted at the higher liquid to solids
ratio (8 L/kg) and extracted for a period of 18 hours. The solids were again separated from the liquid
fraction and the resultant liquid was submitted for analysis.
3.8. Survival and Growth Testing of Spionid Polychaete Worms (Polydora Cornuta)
Survival and growth testing was completed to evaluate the effects of exposure to the tailings solids on the
reproduction of the marine polychaete worm (Polydora Cormuta). As per the Environment Canada EPS
1/RM/41 test method, each treatment consisted of 5 replicates utilising five organisms per replicate over a
14 day period.
The tests were conducted in 300 mL glass vessels containing 50 mL of sediment with approximately 200
mL of dilution water (reconstituted sea water at 30±2 g/kg salinity) and aerated overnight. After 24 hours,
5 polychaetes were randomly introduced to each test vessel. The test was conducted at 23±1°C with
overhead fluorescent illumination of 16 hours light (providing between 500 and 1000 lux intensity at the
Nussir ASA – Kvalsund Deposit – Project 12527-002

5
sediment surface) and 8 hours dark. After 14 days the vessels were poured through stainless steel
screens and the surviving organisms are retrieved, counted and weighed. Each test is accompanied by a
control test containing reference sediment. The biological endpoint for the test is percent survival and
growth at Day 14. All toxicity tests were subcontracted to Aquatox Testing and Consulting Inc (Aquatox).
The total organic carbon, moisture content (dry weight basis) and particle size distribution (determined by
sieve and hydrometer) of the test sample was determined by SGS and supplied to Aquatox for the
completion of this testwork.
3.8.1. Total Organic Carbon
A weighed sample of the tailings sent for sediment toxicity testing was fully oxidized by combustion in an
oxygen atmosphere and the CO2 gases evolved were detected by calibrated infra-red (IR) cells. Total
carbon (C) content was measured as mg and calculated as a percentage of the sample weight.
3.8.2. Moisture Content
The moisture content of the tailings sample for sediment toxicity testing was determined by drying 3
representative cuts of the sample at 60°C until they reached a constant weight and averaging the results.
It should be noted that the moisture contents were calculated based on a dry weight basis as per the
equation below.
MC = Weight of Water/Weight of Dry Solids
3.8.3. Particle Size Distribution
The tailings submitted for sediment toxicity testing were analysed for particle size using the sieve and
hydrometer test methods (a description of the particle size test method is provided in Section 3.12).
3.9. Amphipod Acute Survival Testing Using Whole Sediment
The 10 day marine amphipod test indicates the adverse effects of contaminated sediment on marine
organisms. This test followed the EPS 1/RM/35 and EPS 1/RM/26 test method protocols from
Environment Canada with each treatment consisting of 5 replicates using 20 organisms (Eohaustoriu
Estuarius) per replicate over a 10 day period.
The tests were conducted in 1 L glass vessels containing 175 ml of sediment and 950 ml of dilution water
(reconstituted sea water at 30±2 g/kg salinity) and aerated overnight. After 24 hours, 20 amphipods were
randomly introduced to each vessel. The test is conducted at 15±1°C with constant overhead fluorescent
illumination between 500 to 1000 lux intensity at the sediment surface. Each test is accompanied by
Nussir ASA – Kvalsund Deposit – Project 12527-002
SGS Minerals Services
6
control containing reference sediment collected from the same area as the test organisms. After 10 days,
the vessels are poured through stainless steel screens and the surviving organisms are retrieved and
counted. The biological endpoint for the test is percent survival at Day 10.
3.10. Solid Phase Mircrotox Testing
This test method (EPS 1/RM/24) exposed luminescent bacterium to the sediment sample. Toxic
materials present interfere with the cellular respiration of the organism, which is measured as a decrease
in light output by the bacterium, Vibrio fischeri (previously Photobacterium phosphoreum).
An aliquot (7 ± 0.05 grams) of the wet sediment was transferred to a beaker and stirred for 10 minutes
with 35 mL of solid phase diluent. A dilution series of 12 concentrations and 3 controls were prepared
from this mixture. Bacterial reagent was added to the dilutions and incubated at 15°C for 20 minutes.
These dilutions are filtered to remove sediment particles and the filtrate transferred to cuvettes in the
Microtox analyser. After 10 minutes in the analyser bioluminescence is recorded. The EC50 was then
calculated on a wet weight basis (the concentration of test sediment at which light output by a population
of the luminescent bacterium is reduced by 50% when compared to the untreated control population).
Three aliquots of the sediment were dried and the percentage moisture determined. The IC50 (inhibiting
concentration to 50% of the population) was corrected for moisture content and quoted on a dry weight
basis as mg dry sediment/L of diluent.
3.11. Analysis of the Fresh and Aged Tailings Decant Solutions
Liquid analyses were completed on the initial tailings decant solution (process water) to provide
quantitative analysis of the elemental components and to aid in the identification of elements present at
potential environmentally significant concentrations.
The fresh and aged seawater solutions were decanted from the settled tailings slurries and analyzed after
defined periods of ageing. The objective of this testing was to identify changes in the seawater solution
that had been blended with the tailings over time, and quantify elemental concentrations that may be
released. Decant solutions were collected and submitted for chemical analysis of the following
parameters: pH, alkalinity, acidity, conductivity, EMF, TSS, TDS, anions (Cl, F, SO4, NO2 and NO3), total
thiosalts and ammonia (NH3 and NH4). Total metal analyses were completed as per the previously noted
suite if parameters.
3.12. Particle Size Distribution Analyses (ASTM D 422-63 (2007))
The Micromeritics Model 1305 multivolume gas pycnometer measures the volume of powdery, granular,
porous and irregularly shaped solids in the solids using Boyle’s Law. The test used a known weight of
solids to quantitatively determine the specific gravity of the solids.
Nussir ASA – Kvalsund Deposit – Project 12527-002
SGS Minerals Services
7
Standard screen sieve sizes (Tyler) were used to determine the particle sizes of the solid tailings
particles. The weights of the percent retained and passing on each respective screen size were
determined. The test determined the particle size distribution of the plus 200 mesh fraction of the product
being investigated.
The particle size distribution for the minus 200 mesh fraction of the tailings was established using the
hydrometer (sedimentation) method. A 50 g (dry equivalent) sample was placed into solution (dispersing
agent) with 1 L of distilled water in a standardized glass cylinder. The solution was agitated, and the
particles were permitted to settle out of suspension. As settling occurred over time, the average specific
gravity of the mixture decreased, causing the height of the suspended hydrometer to drop. Reading of
the hydrometer at specific time intervals provided (though established relationships) the weight of the soil
remaining in suspension, and the size of the particles that had settled out of solution. The percent finer
weight was calculated based on the hydrometer readings, using Stokes Law for spheres falling freely in a
fluid of known properties.

Discussion
Rietveld XRD analyses determined that the F12 Comb Tls sample was predominantly comprised of
silicates (68.5 wt.%) and carbonates (30.3 wt.%). Quartz was the dominant silicate mineral followed by
muscovite and plagioclase. Carbonates were largely in the form of calcite (28.4 wt.%) with minor
amounts of dolomite (1.9 wt.%) also being observed. Results of the Rietveld XRD analyses are illustrated
graphically in Figure 1 below.

Results of the whole rock analyses confirmed the primarily silicate composition of the F12 Comb Tls
(48.9%). Significant levels of CaO (16.5%) and Al2O3 (9.4%) and minor to trace amounts of K2O (3.5%),
Fe2O3 (2.4%), MgO (2.3%) and Na2O (1.6%) were also observed. The very high loss on ignition (LOI)
value (13.8%) reported suggests the presence of large amounts of volatile species (e.g. hydrates,
hydroxides and carbonates). Figure 2 illustrates the results of the whole rock analyses.

ICP-OES/MS strong acid digest elemental analyses also corroborated the primarily silicate composition
(23.9%) of the F12 Comb Tls. As expected, moderate levels of Ca (10%) and Al (5.4%), minor levels of K
(2.9%) and trace levels of Fe, Mg and Na (< 2%) were observed. Comparative results of the elemental
analyses are presented in Figure 3. The significant components of the sample are illustrated in Figure 4.

Figure 4: Comparison of the ICP Elemental Significant Components
ABA test results for the F12 Comb Tls reported an alkaline paste pH value (9.38) and fizz rate (4)
suggesting the presence of significant amounts of available reactive alkaline minerals. Determination of
the carbonate (CO3) content of the sample also indicated that 99% of the total NP reported for the
F12 Comb Tls sample is related to fast reacting carbonate minerals. The resultant CO3 NP value (307
t CaCO3/1000 t), coupled with the very low sulphide content (<0.01%), clearly illustrate the neutralisation
capacity of this sample and indicate the potential for acid consumption. The non-acid forming nature of
the F12 Comb Tls was corroborated by the NAG test results which reported no net acidity generated and
alkaline final pH value (11.12) after aggressive oxidation of the sample
The SPLP is used to determine the mobility of contaminants due to interaction with slightly acidic
solutions, such as acid rain or acidic effluent. Since the pH of the SPLP leachant added was 4.2, the

alkaline pH value (9.07) reported is indicative of the inherent buffering capacity within the sample upon
initial exposure to acidic conditions. Analysis of the SPLP leachates reported all World Bank controlled
parameters, with the exception of pH in the sample using SPLP extraction fluid #1, at concentrations well
within the specified limits. It should; however, be noted that analysis of the SPLP artificial seawater blank
reported Cu and Ni concentrations in excess of the published concentrations for this commercially
prepared synthetic sea salt product (Instant Ocean®).
Overall, significant levels (> 1 mg/L) of B, Ca, K, Mg, Na, Si and Sr were observed in the leachates.
Significant increases (1 to 2 orders of magnitude) were observed in the concentrations of Al, As, Ca, K,
Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, U and V released into the standard SPLP leachant (extraction fluid #1) in comparison to
the SPLP extraction blank. Although significantly higher metal concentrations were reported in the
seawater leachant in comparison to the SPLP leachant, it would appear that only very low levels of
metals were released into solution. Mn, Si and U were the only elemental components showing
noteworthy increases (1 to 2 orders of magnitude) in the modified SPLP leachate when compared to the
corresponding seawater blank. Decreased levels of Al, Ba and V were also observed in the modified
SPLP leachant in comparison to the standard SPLP leachant. Comparative results of the SPLP analyses
are shown in Figure 5.

Liquid analyses results (mg/L) from the EN 12457-3 extraction tests reported all World Bank controlled
parameters within the specified limits. Increasing pH values were evident in the second extraction
(L/S=8) leachates from both samples tested. The Nussir samples (DI leachant and artificial seawater
leachant) generally reported significant concentrations of TDS, Cl, SO4, Ca, K, Na and Si. The salt water
extraction also reported considerable levels of B and Sr in solution. Although significantly higher metal
concentrations were typically reported in the EN 12457-3 extraction completed using the artificial

seawater as the leachant; again it would appear that only very low levels of metals were released into
solution as the concentrations of most parameters did not increase largely from that reported for the
seawater blank. Similarly to the SPLP extractions, the artificial seawater leachate showed noteworthy
increases in Mn and Si, and decreases in Al, Ba and V in comparison to the DI leachant. Increased
levels of SO4 were also observed in the 2nd seawater extraction leachate.
Results of the 12457-3 extraction leachate analyses were combined and re-calculated to give results on
the proportion of the constituents that are leachable (mg/kg) on a dry weight basis. Comparisons of the
liquid analyses from the blanks, first and second stage extractions and results of the calculated
cumulative amounts leached are provided in Figures 6 and 7.

Although the Polydora Cornuta (marine polychaete worm) sediment toxicity testing of the F12 Comb Tls
solids reported an 84% survival rate after 14 days, considerable impact was evident in the growth cycle of
the test organisms. A 50% reduction in growth of the Polydora Cornuta was statistically calculated upon
completing of the test.
The F12 Comb Tls failed the 10 day marine amphipod test (Eohausorius Estuarius) reporting a 55%
mortality rate. However, the F12 Comb Tls passed the solid phase microtox assay completed on the
Vibrio Fisheri bacterium.
Analysis of the F12 Comb Tls Decant (process water) and fresh and aged F12 Comb Tls Salt Water
Decant solutions (artificial seawater) reported all World Bank controlled parameters at concentrations
within the designated limits. The initial alkaline pH values (both process water and sea water) decreased
to near neutral (7.69) over the 56 day ageing test period. Moderate levels of alkalinity were maintained
and free acidity was not released. As expected, the addition of the artificial seawater to the tailings solids
resulted in immediate increases in the TDS, Cl and SO4 concentrations and in the resultant conductivity
measurements. Increasing levels of Cl, As, B, Ca, Mn, Mo, Se, Si, Sr and U and decreasing levels of Al,
Ba, Cd, Th and Ti were generally evident over the ageing test period. Comparative results of the
analyses completed on the fresh and aged decant solutions are shown in Figure 8.

Results of the particle size distribution analyses (sieve and hydrometer) indicated that the F12 Comb Tls
sample tested was comprised primarily of fines with only 22% of the particles falling into the fine sand
size category while 78% of the sample passed the 200 mesh (0.075 mm) sieve. The majority of these
fines were comprised of silt size particles (~72%) with only 6% of the particles falling into the clay sized
fraction.

QUANTITATIVE PHASE ANALYSIS OF ONE POWDER SAMPLE USING THE RIETVELD METHOD AND X-RAY POWDER DIFFRACTION DATA. (Project: 12527-002 – PO# 74088) Barbara Bowman SGS Lakefield Research Ltd. 185 Concession Street Lakefield, ON K0L 2H0
Mati Raudsepp, Ph.D. Elisabetta Pani, Ph.D. Jenny Lai, B.Sc. Edith Czech, M.Sc. Dept. of Earth & Ocean Sciences The University of British Columbia 6339 Stores Road Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z4 March 9, 2011
54
EXPERIMENTAL METHOD
The sample “F12 Comb Tls” of Project 12527-002 was reduced to the optimum grain-size
range for quantitative X-ray analysis (<10 μm) by grinding under ethanol in a vibratory
McCrone Micronising Mill for 7 minutes. Step-scan X-ray powder-diffraction data were
collected over a range 3-80°2θ with CoKa radiation on a Bruker D8 Focus Bragg-Brentano
diffractometer equipped with an Fe monochromator foil, 0.6 mm (0.3°) divergence slit, incident-
and diffracted-beam Soller slits and a LynxEye detector. The long fine-focus Co X-ray tube was
operated at 35 kV and 40 mA, using a take-off angle of 6°.
RESULTS
The X-ray diffractogram was analyzed using the International Centre for Diffraction Database
PDF-4 and Search-Match software by Siemens (Bruker). X-ray powder-diffraction data of the
sample were refined with Rietveld program Topas 4.2 (Bruker AXS). The results of quantitative
phase analysis by Rietveld refinements are given in Table 1. These amounts represent the
relative amounts of crystalline phases normalized to 100%. The Rietveld refinement plot is
shown in Figure 1.
