Preparing for fencing
• Make sure that appropriate fencing tools are selected for job to be performed
• Fencing work procedures can be separated into the following areas requiring different tools:
– Fence demolition – wire cutters, pliers, hammer, sledge hammer, chain, bucket, shovel, crow bar
• Vehicles and machinery required to assist in fence demolition can include:– Tractor, trailer, ute, carry all, quad bike, truck,
front end loader
• Personal protective equipment required for fence demolition will include:– Eye protection: goggles or safety glasses, sun
glasses

• Hand protection
– Riggers gloves or similar
• Foot wear
– Leather safety boots or similar
• Sun protection
– Broad brimmed hat or similar and sun block
• Clothing
– Long sleeved shirt and long trousers
Fence demolition hazards include
• Possible dangers from sharp ends on wire
• Rusty barbed wire
• Unsafe work practices
• Heavy posts
• Run overs
• Crushing and laceration dangers
• Bites etc
• Sun radiation
Carrying out fence installation, repair and maintenance
• Select suitable PPE – gloves, safety glasses, broad brimmed hat, long sleeved shirt and trousers, sun block
• Make sure you select suitable tools and equipment for the type of fencing work you are to perform
– This will require you to take into consideration the type of materials being used in the construction or for maintenance of the particular fence to be worked on
• Always repair and maintain fencing tools immediately a problem is detected or as soon as possible
• Always place small pieces of wire or staples in a container and never leave them lying around as they do cause the death of animals when swallowed
• Never leave fencing tools on ground, place them back into tool box or carrier immediately when finished use
• Store tools away from moisture and weather

Wire knots
• In all types of wire and all fencing products, a knot lowers the actual breaking load of a line of wire
• This lowering of the braking force is of particular relevance to the double loop and bull wire knots. The double loop cannot be recommended for use with plain wire. The bull wire not cannot be recommended under any circumstances
• In all plain fencing wire, the figure of 8 knot decreases the breaking force less than other knots and tends to be the most consistent
Wire knots
• The pin and loop knot is quite satisfactory, especially for short strains or where the minimum amount of tension is to be lost
• The higher the tensile strength of the wire, the less consistent the knots and the greater the tendency to lower the breaking force relative to the strength of the wire
• Knots in barbed wire, both 2.5 mm and 1.57 mm high tensile, do not vary sufficiently to justify recommendation of a particular. Ease of tying becomes the deciding factor
