Objectives
To give you an opportunity to shape the PS Review
To gather your initial thoughts about where we need to improve
Agenda
Working together
Why are we here?
Why PSR? - the challenge facing us
What is PSR all about?
It’s your opportunity to reflect and influence the shape and nature of PSR – so have your say!
Where do we go next?
The Rules of Engagement…
This is a ‘safe environment’: (a) everyone’s views are welcome and are respected, (b) listening to each other is key and (c) constructive challenge is encouraged (without fear of recourse)
We can share differing views and where we can explore the issues we are dealing with
We should aim to interact and everyone is encouraged to participate
This meeting is only as good as the contribution(s) we are prepared to make
Will focus on working through challenges and fostering collaboration between ourselves
Let’s turn our mobiles off (and keep them off)
Why are we here?
The Emerging EnvironmentInternational & national drivers
Internaldrivers
Austerity: significant cuts to BIS & HEFCE budget anticipated

The Professional Services Review is about working with academic colleagues and students to enable Exeter to thrive & succeed
What does this mean for us as Professional Services?
Having a shared vision and a plan to deliver it
Partnering effectively to deliver the colleges’ and Student Guild’s ambitions – helping the University rise further in the league tables
Doing the things that matter – stop/start/do more of what we do
Providing services in the right way in the right place
Investing in ourselves so that we have the right tools and skills
Having common values that we all believe in and enact
Being flexible and agile - able to continually evolve to meet the next challenge
We need to define the scope of this to focus our efforts…What’s in the review? All levels of PS activity:
Strategy & operating model
Structures, policy, procedures, process
Staff skills and capabilities
Enablers – IT, Lean, physical location
Organisations All PS services and colleges
FX+?
Interactions with external partners – GW4?
Locations Streatham, St Lukes, Cornwall
... and what else?
... and what else?
We need to define the scope of this to focus our efforts…
... and what else?
And what’s outside the review? Things we cannot change eg things controlled
by legislative requirements
Things we may not want to change

“How far have we got the scope and objectives for this review right?”
Now it’s over to you…
“What do you think we need to do to make this review successful?”
And a further question…
“What will ensure that this review delivers enduring success and benefits
to students and staff?”
And one more…
“Where and how our service provision can be even stronger or more
innovative?”
OK, the last one…
Where do we go next?
We need to take some time to ensure that we do the right things…

This review is as much about how we do things as what – and here we need your help
We need you to …
Shine and lead others through the growth curve
Embrace pan-university team work
Demonstrate a commitment to the student and staff experience
Be willing to flex your team structures/boundaries and service portfolio
Give more frequently than you will receive (in the short term)
Manage risk(s) to the highest level of professional competencies
Communicate well with your teams – make it a two way process
Listen and love the academic voice!
The review starts now…After this meeting we need you to start to engage your teams in the review
Tell your team 3 things about today:
1. The PS review is about creating a Professional services team that can work effectively with academic colleagues to meet our future challenges
2. We are in a planning phase – nothing will happen until we are clear about what we need to do
3. This change is about our future and we will all be asked to play a part
Gather their initial thoughts and feed these back to your Director or College Manager:
1. What questions do they have?
2. What opportunities for change do they see?
3. What worries them
We would like to hear back from each college and service in a month’s time

So now you get to eat your cream tea…and there’s one last piece of advice we need
We would like you to:
Carry on your conversations upstairs with other colleagues
Give us your feedback on how today has gone
Volunteer yourself if you feel you have skills or relevant experiences we might need (or even if you’d just like to get involved and lead something)
