Mummy, what are
prepositions?
A preposition is a part of speech that shows a relationship (connection) between two things. Let’s watch a video to learn more!
The video was
interesting!
Click on this List of Prepositions to look
at prepositions that we always use in our daily
lives.
Exactly! Today, we will look at three prepositions closely. They are to, up
and off.
I learnt that a preposition can tell us three
important things such as the location (on, under,
in), timing (before, after, during) and direction
(from, toward, to, through).
Prepositions- ‘to’ / Part 1 ‘To’ tells you the direction of a person,
animal or thing ( nouns) or the purpose.
• DirectionWe use ‘to’ when describing where something is going from one place to another.
Examples:1. We flew to Paris.2. Mother is walking to the market.3. I am going to school.
Prepositions- ‘to’ / Part 2 ‘To’ tells you the direction of a person,
animal or thing ( nouns) or the purpose.
• PurposeWe use ‘to’ when describing our purpose or intention to do something
Examples:1. I am going to scold him!2. He is sitting down to do his work.3. Ali is going to meet me later.
Prepositions- ‘to’ / Part 3 ‘To’ tells you the direction of a person,
animal or thing ( nouns) or the purpose.
• Direction and PurposeWe can use ‘to’ to show direction and purpose together in one sentence.
Examples:1. We flew to Paris to see Dad.2. Mother is going to the market to buy fish.3. I am going to school to study.
No worries. The lesson on ‘up’ is coming
up next.
Wow! I didn’t know ‘to’ can be used in
two ways. What about the preposition ‘up’,
mummy?
Prepositions- ‘up’
‘Up’ tells you the direction of something moving away from the ground. The word ‘up’ usually comes after the verb ( action).
• DirectionWe use ‘up’ when describing something moving away from the ground.
Examples:1. We followed her up the stairs to a large meeting room .2. Put up your hand to answer.3. We ran up the hill!
The lesson on ‘off’ is coming
up next.
Hands up those who understood that!
Now, what about the preposition ‘off’,
mummy?
Prepositions- ‘off’
‘Off’ tells you the direction of a person, animal or thing moving away from the original place.
• DirectionWe use ‘off’ when describing something moving towards the ground or away from something.
Examples:1. Charlie fell off his bed last night.2. Mother sending me off to school.3. Father went off to work at seven.

‘to’ , ‘up’ and ‘off’ are being used
now.
