Welcome to

Growing in Grace, a comprehensive children’s music curriculum. The heart of Growing in Grace is the music. The songs appearing in each unit have been carefully written to ensure they are developmentally appropriate for the child, both theologically and musically. With understandable texts, singable melodies, and interesting accompaniments, these songs will help each child develop his or her natural singing skills, increase in musical knowledge, and grow spiritually. The Year 2 theme, With Hearts and Hands and Voices, is based on scriptural concepts throughout the Bible that emphasize reasons we sing: to praise God, to remember His Word, to serve others, to share His Word, and to pray.

The curriculum package includes two CDs with demonstration and accompaniment recordings, along with teaching materials. Steps for Using Growing in Grace

Print the checklists first to track items as they are printed.

Follow the Teaching Steps instructions to prepare the items.

What’s New this Semester?

Improved labeling has been added to all materials for easier organization.

“Piano Plus” instrumental enhancements have been added to the Demo Recordings and Accompaniment Tracks of selected songs where stylistically appropriate. The scores of traditional instrumentations are included as always. However, instrumental scores of the electronic additions are not available.

Printing Tips

Ensure the Auto Rotate and Center option is checked in the print dialogue box.

Color items may be printed and used successfully in grayscale if a color printer is not available.

Many items may be easily enlarged to 11 x 17.

Some material should be printed on card stock and/or laminated. See Teaching Steps.

Print as many copies of curriculum materials and songs as needed for your choir.

Tips for getting the most from your

Growing in Grace Children’s Music Curriculum

Songs Listen to the recording as soon as possible. The better you know each song, the better you will be able to teach it. You can have more eye contact with the children when you are not tied to the page; sometimes, you want to “break into song” when you can’t get to the recording! Song Teaching Steps Individual Song Teaching Steps are provided for each song in the event you want to teach a particular song at a particular time. However, those teaching steps will also be printed within session plans when used, to avoid having to deal with additional pages. Visuals To make an item more durable, use card stock when printing, then laminate (by machine or covering with transparent, adhesive paper). When several pages are to be connected for a larger item, position and glue them first to brown wrapping paper, then follow the laminating step. Consider every item as something to keep for future use, and begin to build that choir supply closet. Activity Groups Most session plans suggest four different activity groups. Rotate four groups of children so that a leader presents the same material four times, each time to a different group of children. Leaders have the option to adapt this arrangement to fit individual choirs (two activities for two groups in two sessions or one group doing a different activity in every session). KIDPages Lesson plans include reminders to make copies, with suggestions as to which pages to use and when. Many times, they are connected to an activity. Sometimes they are begun in choir with instructions to finish at home, hoping to carry the thoughts of the day to the families. Hand these pages to the parents as they come to pick up their children. Session Plans You will find plans for each session. Shorten or stretch these plans to fit your needs. Look at each session several days in advance. Check out the steps suggested. In so doing, you can tailor the plans to your choir and be reminded of any special preparation you need to make, such as the preparation of a particular visual or a sample KIDPage. Hymns Wonderful hymn texts and hymn tunes are a vital part of our Christian heritage. They are treasures to claim and pass on to every generation. We want to begin planting those seeds with preschoolers. Most of the texts are beyond their vocabulary, just as most of the melodies are beyond their vocal range. Our goal for these young children is to give them parts of those hymns or listening experiences that will enable them to recognize a tune. What joy to see a child respond when he or she hears “my” hymn. You will find these in the semester’s plans.

Animal Stackers Activity C Teaching Steps, page 1 © 2013 Celebrating Grace, Inc. All rights reserved.

Animal StackersSMALL-GROUP ACTIVITY C Animal Stackers is a singing game activity that allows children to practice using their singing voice and sing alone in a fun environment.

MATERIALS NEEDED• Animal Stackers Visual• Scissors• Tape

PREPARATION• Print Animal Stackers Visual on

card stock.• Fold each animal card along the solid

lines. Tape the ends together to form a triangular shape. (See diagram on next page.)

1. Arrange children in a seated circle on the floor.• Place a different animal card in front of each child.

2. Sing the question and answer melody with the children. • Use the words “Who has the animal?” so that all children can sing this

answer together, “I have the animal.”

• Repeat several times, until children are comfortable singing the melody.

3. Choose a child whom you know is comfortable

singing alone. • Sing the question, substituting the name of the specific animal given to that

child.

• Guide the child to sing the response.

• Ask the child to place her card in the middle of the circle after she sings.

ACTIVITY N TEACHING STEPS

Robot Moves Activity N Teaching Steps © 2013 Celebrating Grace, Inc. All rights reserved.

Robot MovesSMALL-GROUP ACTIVITY N Robot Moves focuses on steady beat and movement. Children will be able to move in different ways with different parts of their bodies while feeling the steady beat.

MATERIALS NEEDED• Robot Moves Visuals 1-6• MP3 or CD Demo l (“Funga Alafia”)• MP3 or CD player • drum (optional)• tambourine (optional) PREPARATION• Print Robot Moves Visuals 1-6 on

card stock. • Practice and be familiar with all

moves.

Teaching TipDisplay visuals on a wall, pocket chart, or poster board. Establish a steady beat by patting your leg, a drum, or a tambourine. Point to the visuals on that beat to help children move more accurately to the beat.

1. Show Robot Moves Visual 1.• Ask children to identify the movement pictured. (Clap hands.)

• Ask a volunteer to show the move for everyone to copy.

2. Repeat this process with Visuals 2-6:• Visual 2—Bend up and down at waist.

• Visual 3—Sway side to side.

• Visual 4—Lift arms overhead, then move them down and up.

• Visual 5—March in place.

• Visual 6—Whirl around in a circle.

3. Demonstrate each move to a steady beat for eight counts. • Ask children to join you.

• Hold up the visuals at random as children do the movements.

4. Play Demo l. • Guide children to begin clapping hands to the half-note beat, after the

2-meas. introduction.

• Play Demo l again. Guide children to do the movements on the visuals eight times each, to the half-note beat.

• Either hold up, or point to, the visuals randomly as children perform moves with the music.

5. Let children point to visuals as everyone else moves. • This can be done with or without the recording. A drum can be used to

establish the beat.
