Present Progressive

• To show an action is happening you use the present progressive.

• When in the present progressive, the verb is formed with the verb stare in front of it.

• Followed by the gerund of the verb.

• The gerund relates to the –ing form or the verb in English

• An example: sleeping.

• In Italian this is formed by dropping the verb ending –are, -ere, or –ire

• Then you add on the ending -ando or -endo

The Gerund

• The –are ending goes to –ando.

• The –ere and –ire goes to –endo.

• Examples: » Mangiare magiando» Perdere perdendo» Dormire dormendo

The Correct Gerund

• There are two irregular verbs that do not follow the pattern

• The gerund of Fare » Fare facendo

• The gerund of Bere» Bere bevendo
