Landbouw en Handelsbeleid

• Landbouw was vroeger een "defensief" EU belang in de handel (Bijv.: rundvlees, bananen, suiker, knoflook, champignons, mais, etc). Produktieoverschotten werden met export subsidies op de wereldmarkt verkocht. Die subsidies worden nu niet meer gebruikt (USA Food Aid wordt nog wel gebruikt om US overschotten te dumpen).

• Na aanzienlijke tariefsverlagingen, landbouw-hervormingen, en produktiviteitsverhogingen is de EU nu de grootste exporteur en importeur.

• De EU landbouw zelf wordt groener en de nadruk ligt op kwaliteit ("value added").

Landbouw en Handelsbeleid (vervolg)

In de FTA onderhandelingen zijn we veelal offensief: exportkansen voor landbouwprodukten met hoge toegevoegde waarde zoals zuivel, wijn, verwerkte produkten (pasta, bier, kazen, ham), maar ook kunnen we concurreren met varkensvlees, groenten, kalfsvlees, etc.

In FTAs exporteren we ook ons model van kwaliteitslandbouw: Wederzijdse bescherming van Geografische Indicaties (zoals champagne, parmezaanse kaas, wijnen, whiskey, ham, etc)

EU onderhandelt ook bilaterale erkenning van Geographische Indicaties (met China bijvoorbeeld, want geen FTA) en wederzijdse erkenning van biologische landbouwprodukten.
