Allergy • Hypersensitivity to a certain substance in the environment. • At least one out of every 5 Americans suffers from

allergies. • Common causes of allergy:

– Food allergies such as peanut allergy or milk allergy – Seasonal allergies resulting from grass, weed, tree pollen, or

various molds. – Cat and dog allergies (Pet dander) – Allergic skin conditions. – Dust mites – Pollen – Insect stings – Medication

Symptoms

– itchy eyes – sneezing – nasal congestion – wheezing – rash – itchy skin – runny nose – swelling

Hives • Outbreak of swollen, pale red

bumps or plaques (wheals) on the skin that appear suddenly, as a result of allergic reaction to something you have come into contact with .

• Hives can occur on any part of the body including your tongue, ears, lips or face (known as facial hives).

• Hives can move from one area to another within minutes, and can disappear and reappear within hours.

Hodgkin’s disease (HOJ-kins dih-ZEEZ)

• Also called Hodgkin’s lymphoma. • Hodgkin's lymphoma is a cancer of lymph tissue found in the

lymph nodes, spleen, liver, bone marrow, and other sites. • The first sign of Hodgin's lymphoma is often a swollen lymph

node. The disease can spread to nearby lymph nodes. Later can spread to the spleen, liver, bone marrow, or other organs.

• Most common in people ages 15 - 35 and 50 - 70. • The disease is more common in men than women and has a high

occurrence in areas that have a large number of people affected by HIV/AIDS.

• Hodgkin’s disease is named after a British physician, Thomas Hodgkin.

Symptoms • Fatigue • Fever and chills that come and go • Itching all over the body that cannot be

explained • Loss of appetite • Soaking night sweats • Painless swelling of the lymph nodes in the

neck, armpits, or groin (swollen glands) • Weight loss that cannot be explained • trouble breathing

Other symptoms that may occur with this disease: • Coughing, chest pains, or breathing problems if

there are swollen lymph nodes in the chest • Excessive sweating • Pain or feeling of fullness below the ribs due to

swollen spleen or liver • Pain in lymph nodes after drinking alcohol • Skin blushing or flushing
