National Industrial Policy Framework (NIPF)

» To facilitate diversification beyond our current reliance on traditional commodities and non-tradable services.

The long-term intensification of South Africa’s industrialisation process and movement towards a knowledge economy.

The promotion of a more labour-absorbing industrialisation path with a particular emphasis on tradable labour-absorbing goods and services and economic linkages that catalyse employment creation.

The promotion of a broader-based industrialisation path characterised by greater levels of participation of historically disadvantaged people and marginalised regions in the mainstream of the industrial economy.

Contributing to industrial development on the African continent with a strong emphasis on building its productive capabilities

Industrialisation

• It is the process of social and economic change that transforms a human group from a pre-industrial society into an industrial one.

•  • It is a part of wider modernization process, where

social change and economic development are closely related with technological innovation.

•  • It is the extensive organisation of an economy for the

purpose of manufacturing.

Page 11: Presentation at Moshito September 2010 Presented by: Julia Nzimande Deputy Director: Creative Industries Industrial Development Division (IDD)

Policy Mix

• Industrial policy cannot be the responsibility of one government department (the dti) and other government departments need to assist. One requires a policy mix, a mix of policies from various government departments.
