Citation

Her Majesty the Queen has graciously approved a Royal Warrant setting out the conditions under which the Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct Medal may be awarded.

‘For Exemplary Fire Service’

This honour is only gained after tendering 20 years long and meritorious service to the Fire Brigade and the public.

The awarding of this medal indicates the high esteem in which the recipient is held by the authorities and the public and expresses their gratitude for honourable service and devotion to duty.

Elizabeth RElizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other Realms and Territories QUEEN, head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, to all to whom these Presents shall come, Greeting!

Whereas We, being desirous of honoring those who have rendered long and meritorious service as members of the Fire Brigades of the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, did by warrant dated 1st June 1954 for Us, Our Heirs and Successors institute and create a new Medal to be designated and styled ‘The Fire Brigade Long ServiceandGoodConductMedal’.

The qualifying period requisite for the award shall be twenty years’wholetimeorparttimeserviceinoneoftheFireBrigades.

No person shall be recommended for the Medal unless, havingcompletedthequalifiedperiodofservice,itiscertifiedthathischaracterandconducthavebeenverygood. It is also a requirement that the candidates shall have beenputforwardbytheChiefFireOfficer.

FirefighterMichaelBealMichaelhasservedatWellingtonFireStationasafirefightersince 1991.

Watch Manager Paul Chamberlain

Paul joined the Service in 1988, at the age of 16, as a Junior FirefighteratWillitonbeforejoiningtheretainedranksin1990.

Hebecameawholetimefirefighterin1992,servingatYeoviland Taunton, before a temporary promotion to Leading FirefighterintheCommunitySafetyDepartmentin1997andanother to Community Safety for Bridgwater Group Support in 2005.

Paul worked in Barnstable Group Support in 2008 and Taunton Group Support in 2009. He was promoted to Watch Manager at Bridgwater in 2010 and is currently working as a Training Manager at the Severn Park Training Centre, Bristol.

Watch Manager Stefan ClarkStefanjoinedCamelsHeadFireStationasafirefighterin1991 and moved to Exeter in 1994.

HewaspromotedtoLeadingFirefighterattheBASchoolin2000beforejoiningFireSafetyasaSubOfficerin2002.Hebecame a Watch Manager at Exmouth in 2004.

FirefighterJulieCoombesJulieisbelievedtobethelongestservingfemalefirefighterinthe Service, having served at Wells Fire Station since 1991.

Crew Manager Donald James DistinDonaldjoinedtheServiceasafirefighteratAshburtonin1991 and was promoted to Crew Manager in 2001.

He has also provided Day Cover at Buckfastleigh since 1998.

Watch Manager Fred GlanvilleFredjoinedYelvertonFireStationin1991andwaspromotedtoLeadingFirefighterin2000.

He was promoted again to Watch Manager at the station in 2006.

Group Manager Paul GodwinPaul started his career with the Service as a retained firefighteratTauntonFireStationin1990andjoinedthewholetime personnel at the same station in 1992.

HewaspromotedtoLeadingFirefighterinTrainingin1998andmovedtoYeovilFireStationasSubOfficerin2000.AfterpromotiontoStationOfficeratTauntonin2001hejoined the Operations Policy and Planning Department in 2004 and Service Development in 2008.

He is currently Temporary Group Manager in Taunton Group.

Station Manager Peter Golding

PeterjoinedtheServiceasafirefighteratYeovilin1990andservedasaLeadingFirefighteratTauntonandYeovilbeforepromotiontoSubOfficer,intheTrainingDepartment,in1997.

He became Watch Manager at Bridgwater in 1999 and Temporary Station Manager with the Taunton Group Support Team in 2008.

Crew Commander Ashleigh John Harding AshleighjoinedExmouthFireStationasaretainedfirefighterin 1990 and was promoted to Crew Commander in 2006.

FirefighterMartinPaulHendrickMartinjoinedtheServiceasaretainedfirefighteratIlminsterin1987beforejoiningthewholetimeranksatYeovilWhiteWatch in 1992. He became a Trainer at the station in 1998 beforebecomingpartofBlueWatchin2007.

FirefighterChrisJenkinsChrishasservedasafirefighteratLyntonFireStationsince1991.

FirefighterSteveManleySteve joined Blue Watch at Exeter in 1991 before moving to Special Operations as a USAR Technician in 2008.

Station Commander Jim Morrison

Jim joined the Service in Greater Manchester in 1989 before transferring to Somerset in 2000. He worked at Taunton, South and West Area in Somerset, Ops Support, and Severn Park Training Centre before returning to Taunton in 2009.

Ian David Peters

Ian joined the Service as a Personnel Assistant in the Pay and Conditions Team in 1989 and became a Finance Assistant in 1993.

After moving to West Devon District as a District Admin Assistantin1997andthenFleetAdminAssistantin1998,IanrejoinedtheFinanceTeamasaFinanceOfficerlaterthatyear.

Station Manager Ashley Raddon

AshleyjoinedCamelsHeadasafirefighterin1991beforemoving to Torquay in 1993, where he was promoted to LeadingFirefighterin1998.

The following year he was promoted to Operational IntelligenceatSHQasaSubOfficerbeforereturningtoTorquay in 2001.

HewaspromotedtoStationOfficerinFireSafetybasedatTorquay in 2003.

Crew Commander Mark Stainer MarkjoinedWellsFireStationasafirefighterin1989andbecame Crew Commander at the station in 2005.

Watch Manager Robin SturtivantBobjoinedExeterFireStationasafirefighterin1991andwaspromotedtoLeadingFirefighterattheBASchoolin1996.

He joined the East Division Fire Safety Department as Sub Officerin1999andreturnedtotheBASchoolin2001.HereturnedtoExeterasaSubOfficerin2003andwaspromotedtoStationOfficerin2004,whilealsoservingasaUSARTechnician.In 2008, he joined Exmouth as a Watch Commander.

Letter of commendation

Watch Manager Nigel Parker

Nigel was travelling with his wife along the A38 on the way to a holiday in Cornwall when they encountered a 19-year-old pedestrian who had suffered serious head injuries after a collision with a car.

Nigel protected the woman with his car before administering CPR for 20 minutes while awaiting the arrival of the ambulance crews.

Unfortunately the patient did not recover from her injuries. Nigel’sactionstotrytosavealifewhileoffdutyintraumaticcircumstances were in the best traditions of the Service.

Pete Frearson

Pete is an Emergency Gas Technician with Wales and West UtilitieswhoattendedagasleakatflatsinMonmouthRoad,Taunton, in November 2010.

After discovering rising gas levels within the building, Pete proceeded to move from door to door, warning the residents of the danger and opening windows as he went to lessen the potential danger. He then alerted the emergency services to assist with the evacuation.

Pete’sswiftanddecisiveactionssavedlivesandpreventedapotential gas explosion.
