PRESENTATION DINNER 2019

Ian Scott TrophyA long-time stalwart of the Club, “Scotty” first played hockey for MCC in round 2 of our inaugural season in 1961, and was a multiple winner of the goal scoring trophy, which was named in his honour for the Men’s Section in 2000. Ironically, later in his hockey career, Scotty transitioned into a successful goalkeeper for the “Olds & Bolds” team.

Mature Cow CupIn 1998 Donna Mortimer happened across an old Agricultural Society Cup for “Best Mature Cow” in a local Op Shop and just couldn’t pass it up. The “Mature Cow Cup” Trophy was thus born, awarded to the top goal scorer in the Women’s Section. Prior to this there was no dedicated women’s trophy. Given her rather anachronistic name and advancing age, this may be the Cup’s last year before being put out to pasture…

Frank Hill TrophyFrank was another founding member of MCC Hockey, and holds a unique place within its pantheon, having scored the club’s first ever goal. Frank remains involved in the Hockey Section to this day, running the canteen for Masters’ hockey on Monday nights. This trophy was created in 2015 in his honour and is awarded to the top goal scorer in the Masters’ Section.

TOP GOAL SCORER AWARDS

Sharon Johnson TrophySharon was a former Australian representative player and captain of Nunawading Women’s HC and then MCC Women’s First XI for many years in the late 1980s & early 1990s. She was a tremendous advocate for MCC both on and off the field. This trophy is awarded to the Women’s First XI Best & Fairest.

Ian “Doc” McDonald Trophy “Doc” was a defining figure in the formation of MCC Hockey, and its inaugural Chairman from 1961 to 1969, having already served on the Cricket General Committee from 1958. He received the Hans Ebeling Award for services to the MCC Sporting Sections in 1986, and was bestowed with Life Membership of the MCC in 2000. This Best & Fairest trophy was created in 2001 for the Men’s First XI. Following his passing in February 2019, the first home Premier League round of the season is now also named in his memory.

Ian M McDonald Trophy (Not Listed) Ian was a stalwart of the always sociable “Olds & Bolds” team in the late 1970s, 1980s & early 1990s – a team whose ethos was to play hard, play fair and have a lot of fun doing so. This trophy was created following Ian’s passing in 1999, and is awarded to the Best & Fairest player in the “Club XI” – the lowest ranked team in the Men’s Section.

Dennis Ingleton Trophy (Not Listed)Dennis was a charismatic First XI player in the 1970s and an avid participant in the fledgling MCC Masters Section from its formation in 1984. This trophy was created in 2009 following his passing, and is awarded to the Best & Fairest player in the top-ranked Men’s Masters team.

Mark Merrington Trophy (Not Listed)Mark was a keen social player in MCC lower grade teams and in Masters Hockey, with a huge zest for the finer things in life. The trophy was created in 2002 following his passing, and is awarded to the Best & Fairest player in the Men’s Masters 50+ team.

Dobson TrophyThe Dobson Trophy was created in 1999 and is named after former Hockeyroos and Olympians Christine & Louise Dobson, in recognition of their service to MCC Hockey and Nunawading Women’s HC (one of the Women’s clubs that merged to form MCC Women in 1989). It is awarded to the best or most improved young player in the Women’s Section.

YOUNG PLAYER AWARDS

SERVICE & REPRESENTATIVE AWARDS

Trevor King TrophyTrevor played in MCC’s first ever junior premiership team (under 14) in 1966, and rose through the ranks to eventually become captain and coach of the Men’s First XI. Trevor was a keen supporter of junior players, and this trophy named in his honour was created in 1990. It is awarded to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the Junior Section.

Nunawading-McKinnon Trophy This trophy recognizes the two women’s hockey clubs which merged to form the Women’s Section in 1989. It was created in 1991, and is awarded annually to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the Women’s Section.

O’Sullivan- Stevens Trophy Gerry O’Sullivan and Gordon Stevens were talented young players who were tragically killed in a car accident on their way home from the 1971 Albury Easter Hockey Carnival. This trophy for “Best Clubman” was created that same year and today is awarded to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the Men’s Section.

David Sanders Scholarship David played in the First XI in the 1960s before returning to the Club during the MCC’s sesquicentenary celebrations in 1988, becoming an active social member, and later the co-manager of the Men’s First XI with Ken Wensor. David passed away in 2006 and a scholarship was established in his memory to fund playing fees for the following season of a promising young player has embraced the ideals and principles of the Hockey Section through their commitment and dedication to the MCC colours.

Ken Clarke TrophyKen was one of the founding fathers of MCC Hockey and a captain of the First XI, who also proudly represented both Victoria and Australia (including at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games). This trophy was created in 2013 and is awarded to a player who has represented the state and/or country with pride and excellence.

David Pettit TrophyDavid joined MCC Hockey fresh off the boat as a “Ten Pound Pom” in 1963. He was Chairman from 1985 to 1988, and had a huge impact on the development of the club, most notably in the introduction of the Women’s Section. This trophy was created in 1990 following David’s passing to honour his legacy and invaluable contributions to MCC Hockey. It is awarded periodically to an “Unsung Hero” who has given outstanding service to the Hockey Section, both on and off the pitch, over an extended period of time.

MCC Dunny CupThe most-coveted of all the MCC Hockey Section trophies is the “Dunny Cup”, named when then Chairman Lew Jenkins forged this infamous cup in 1972 from the brass ball valve of a toilet cistern. It is awarded to all MCC Hockey Section Premiership winning teams in any particular year. A myriad of players have since come to appreciate the subtle intricacies and complex palate of a mixture of cold beer (soft drink for juniors) and “brasso”, whilst drinking proudly from the Cup at the conclusion of formal proceedings at the annual Presentation Dinner (and only then and only there!)
