Fast Certification Facts
• NAMSS has achieved NCCA accreditation for the CPCS and CPMSM certifications
• NAMSS CCN completed a job task analysis which was used to develop the newest versions of the certification exams
• Implementing a Certificant Referral Program to increase certificant candidates
Why Certify?
Certification by NAMSS puts MSPs in the driver’s seat: It increases MSPs’ potential for advancement in any healthcare environment and indicates to their supervisor(s) and accreditation surveyors that they are experts in the field, both which enhance an MSP’s value and job security.
Job seekers! Certification is arequirement of many employers, especially in positions of management.
NAMSS 2011 Advocacy Agenda
• To educate policymakers and healthcare leaders on the value of the MSP in the delivery of healthcare
• To advocate for policies and resources that will support MSPs in our evolving roles
• To work with government, accreditation agencies, and association leaders to ensure that patient safety remains the central focus of quality healthcare
• Integration of health IT should not be limited to the electronic health record
• MSPs should have a one-stop source for a primary source verified file, making the credentialing process more efficient
• A solution that will not replace MSPs, but allows MSPs to focus time on the investigation of questionable files, OPPE, FPPE, and other quality-focused initiatives
The Ideal Credentialing Solution
• Intelligent. Using available technology, the system would perform a “cross-check” of data elements to verify the physician’s identity and to catch adverse information that may not have been reported in the application
• Interoperable. The system would be based online in a secure system that works with credentialing software
• Innovative. Many companies are trying to develop a one-stop credentialing system, but there is no true solution yet available
How Would it Work?
• The Ideal Credentialing Solution would use hospital directory information or a standardized roster to piece together a timeline of physician affiliations
• This would provide a solution to the time-consuming process of investigating time “gaps” in a physician’s application
Affiliation History
• Course instructors at Harvard/MIT have expressed interest in having students explore the feasibility of creating the Ideal Credentialing Solution
• Harvard/MIT students will also look at existing technology to see how it matches up to the concept of the Ideal Credentialing Solution
• NAMSS continues outreach to government and private stakeholders for their thoughts on the Ideal Credentialing Solution
The Ideal Credentialing Solution
NAMSS in Washington
In January, NAMSS President Kate Conklin met with representatives from the following offices in DC
– Department of Veterans Affairs– Department of Health and Human Services
• ESAR-VHP– Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
• Office of Clinical Standards and Quality• Survey and Certification Group• Office of E-Health Standards
– Senator John Cornyn (TX)– Representative Michael Burgess (TX)
NAMSS in Washington
• In each meeting, the MSP role was recognized as a vital component of quality healthcare
• Some staffers were surprised by the lack of transparency and the inefficiencies that complicate credentialing
• NAMSS was recognized as a true thought leader with the Ideal Credentialing Solution concept
NAMSS in Washington
• While at CMS, NAMSS was provided with clarification on some of the most common questions from MSPs on CMS policies
• CMS also helped NAMSS identify other federal agencies and offices that have an interest in improving credentialing technology
• The ESAR-VHP team and NAMSS will continue to discuss the best ways to ensure quality credentialing of healthcare providers for disaster response
HFAP Standards
• In 2010, HFAP COO George Reuther contacted NAMSS, giving us the opportunity to recommend revisions to their standards
• A five-member NAMSS task force – analyzed and recommended edits to the Medical
Staff and Allied Health Chapters of the HFAP Standards
– proposed the addition of a standard that would require facilities to have a qualified MSP managing the functions of the medical staff department
• Edits were submitted to HFAP in February 2011
Medical Staffing Ratios Survey
NAMSS commissioned a Medical Staffing Study in 2009 to provide states and individual members with updated data and trends.
The results of the study help:– Identify the number and validate the complexity of
the application and verification process. – Provide a benchmark for facilities to reference
when justifying business needs. – Indicate how tasks, roles, and responsibilities of
medical services staff have expanded and changed over time.
Results of the survey and materials to help maximize its application are available to NAMSS members in the Members’ Only Section of the Web site.
MSP Video What Is Medical Staff Management? • Viewable and
downloadable on the NAMSS Web site
• Emphasizes the value of medical services professionals
• Demonstrates the link between MSPs and patient safety
Get Involved with NAMSS
Now is the time to start thinking about whether a volunteer leadership position within NAMSS is right for you, and if it is, that you are taking the appropriate steps now to reach that goal
• Review the Director and Officer Criteria found online in the Nomination of Board Members policy
• Identify what steps you should take to achieve your leadership goal
• Reach out to others for guidance
New Changes to Nominating Criteria
NAMSS Officers: Now requires previous experience as a NAMSS Committee chair or vice-chair, or as a NAMSS Board member.
NAMSS Director at Large: Now includes demonstrated experience on a state association board or a NAMSS committee.
These initial criteria are then considered in conjunction with an applicant’s formal education, years in the profession, character references and interviews with the Nominating Committee.
What Does NAMSS Currently Offer States?
• Complimentary booth at the State Fair at the NAMSS Annual Conference
• NAMSS Review and guidance on state bylaws and policies
• NAMSS-hosted state Web sites
• Access to a Director at Large liaison which provides a direct line to NAMSS Board
• A state resources page on the NAMSS Web site as well as a state leaders discussion forum (includes PR toolkit, conference planning resources and soon to include a tax and incorporation toolkit)

State Affiliation
• Currently, state associations are not officially affiliated with NAMSS.
• NAMSS Board of Directors is looking into affiliation and will be seeking input from state leaders at the 2011 Leadership Conference.

What Affiliation May Bring
Through affiliation, NAMSS hopes to be able to offer the following additional benefits:
– Discounted Insurance (Directors and Officers, Liability, Conference Cancellation)
– Assistance with tax questions and incorporation
