The Municipality of Syros implements generalized recycling program by installing new bins (yellow, blue, silver, red, green) improving the collection system systematically informing the citizens about all actions
The percentage of recycling reaches 35% by weight of waste . It promotes
recycling of lamps, small and large batteries, electrical devices of all sizes, used lubricating oil, tires, even vehicles. It holds the highest position nationwide (the European average reaches 39%)
The Municipality of Syros is awarded with the special prize “Dafnis” for its innovative waste and recycling management.
It subsidizes the purchase of household compost bins by residents
Autonomous photovoltaic lampsPhotovoltaic systems have been installed at various points around the island. The aim is that all the traditional lighting systems are replaced by photovoltaic so that high energy saving is achieved.
Installation of drinking water units in SyrosSyros installed drinking water production and distribution units. Citizens can get 10 liters of drinking water in 20 minutes. This water comes from rain or desalinated sea water, which after proper processing becomes potable. Each unit saves more than 100,000 plastic bottles a year and as a result this action contributes to energy saving.
