Senior Project/ Extended Essay

At the Center of the IB

what is it?

� Personal research � Student chooses the subject and the

question �  4,000 words (or equivalent) in an IB

subject.

what is it? � SP is any topic of interest and in a

variety of formats with a 1,000 word report.

� The emphasis is put on creative project.

Place in Student learning � EE-Required for the IB Diploma � EE-Counts towards additional IB

diploma points along with TOK

Place in Student learning � SP- Required for UNIS Diploma

� SP-can be used for CAS, “Creative”

hours

� Both (EE/SP) can be used for college process

The Process (Spring)

Identify the subject (student)

History, Language, Philosophy, Art = Readings and analysis

Sciences, Mathematics, Economics, Anthropology = More experimental and data collection.

Two routes

The Process (Spring) Identify the topic (student with supervisor’s or

coordinator’s help) � Make list � Read general

sources (Textbooks, Encyclopedias…)

� Talk to supervisor �  Look at former

EE/SP

� WHEN ? � March

The Process (Spring) Support � Bi-weekly meeting with supervisor

The Process (Summer) � Gather more data (readings,

experiments, interviews, statistics….)

� Organize the information � WRITE FIRST DRAFT =

COMPLETE ESSAY

The Process (Fall) � Present a full draft to supervisor

(September 1st-8th) � Review re-writes after discussion

with supervisor � FINAL DUE DATE OCTOBER 13th

�  June Report: Pass, Incomplete � October Report: Pass, Fail �  January Report: Pass, Fail (Not

evaluation of EE, Evaluation of SP)

Reporting

Extended Essay Process � 40 hours of work � 3 to 5 hours for regular meetings with

supervisor � 4,000 words � Final meeting or “Viva Voce” with

supervisor

Role of the Supervisor

�  Advice, guidance and support �  3-5 hours supervising

�  Ensures the EE is personal work

�  Reports on progress

�  Reads and comments on the drafts

�  Does NOT decide on the topic

�  NO Close editing

�  Fix Deadlines

Role of Parents

�  Listen �  Discuss the topic with the student �  Support your child during this long

process �  Confirm that they met the main

Calendar of events �  February 10th: Presentation of EE/SP process �  February 19th: Choice of EE/SP subject

completed �  March 2nd: Supervisor assigned �  March 12th: First bi-weekly meeting with

supervisor �  June 4th: Plan defined for Summer work �  June 17th-18th: Work on EE-SP and College in

the library

�  Summer: Most important time to advance on work (include research and writing: at least 20 hours)

�  September 1st: Hand in draft (complete essay)

�  October 13th: Final essay
