Rapid Prototyping through 3D Printing

Prototype through 3D Printing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file using additive manufacturing techniques. In this process, layers of material are successively deposited one above the other to create an object. Each layer can be visualized like thinly sliced section of the object.

How does it work

The first step towards making a Rapid Prototype 3D printed object starts with creation of virtual

CAD modeling generally in the form of mesh model. Such digital models of real life objects can also be created by using a 3D scanner. The digital files are then processed using a slicing program that creates hundreds to thousands of horizontal layers. This file is then loaded into a 3D printer which reads every slice and reproduces the object, blending each layer to another seamlessly.

Applications of 3D Printing

Education

As students, create masterpieces of 3D art in the classroom, the 3D printer can bring the art into reality. Any design and shape that can be imagined can be created in real-life.

They can learn how proteins and catalysts work by making physical models and piecing them together.

Designing/Décor/Jewellery 3D printing is rapidly becoming a preferred means of production for many jewellery designers, more and more artists are turning to it to create precious artworks that can be customized and 3D printed to order.

Like a magic portal between imagination and reality, 3D printing makes characters and props from ideas every day.

It's now possible to design your own home decorations and bring them to life.

ArchitectureThe design process in which architects are involved takes a lot of time and is often very stressful, handmade Styrofoam scale models are a waste of precious time in that sense. To save their valuable time, they now have adopted 3D printing into their design process for producing accurate demonstration models.

Biology3D printing today as we know it is used in dental and prosthetics field, prior knowledge of such a technology at a school or college level can prove very helpful in further learning.

Students can study about cross sections of Heart chambers or Kidney. Skeletal system can be clearly depicted using 3D printed models.

Robotics This is one of the fields where 3D printing can be used extensively.

Classrooms can become robot manufacturing plants where custom parts can be built on the go.
