1. INTRODUCTIONThe EU funding, through National Treasury and the DoE.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is participating on the journey towards a

smarter Grid.

NMBM’s project focus is on advanced asset Management which is based

on 3 functions

• Asset Owner

• Asset manager

• Asset service provider

Asset management is supported by 3 pillars of competencies

• Management

• Engineering

• Information

Smart Grid Programme:

• Piloting various SG components and inform national policy and

regulations.

• Set a vision for implementing smarter distribution networks.

• Evaluate, plan, design and introduce innovative technology for grid.

• Progressive implementation for sustainability.

Asset Management:

• Current utility asset methodology.

• Develop asset methodology in line with smart thinking

• Design and implement advanced asset management solution for the

power utility.

• Develop a How to Guide.

SMART GRID VISSION AND OBJECTIVE

SMART GRID OUTCOME

• Smart Grid is an electrical network that can intelligently integrate the

actions of all users connected to it – generators, consumers and

prosumers- in order to efficiently deliver sustainable,

economic and secure electric supply.

HIGH LEVEL PROJECT FOCUS • Asset Management

Adopting existing asset management systems for smart grids

Developing capital infrastructure plan

Developing maintenance plans based on condition monitoring and

reliability base maintenance.

• Monitoring of remote asset

Intelligent kiosks/substations

Online of monitoring of HV transformers

Online monitoring of HV/MV substations

• Smart technologies

Pilot project for smart meters

CURRENT STATUS OF ASSET MANAGEMENT

IN NMBM• Asset management strategy and policy in place

• Asset management system partly functioning

• Need to adapt to Smart Grid Vision

SMART GRID MATURITY ASSESSMENT

• SGMM develops a utility vision and strategy for the

utility.

• Smart city vision of NMBM

• SGMM puts a baseline and helps to integrate the SG

initiatives to Smart City programmes of the city.

• Business plan to charts a way forward to ensure

commitment of funds in budget.

• Motivation for PPP or DBSA funding etc.

PROGRESS

• First PFT meeting held on the 15 October 2014.

• First draft of Annexure A document submitted on the 23 October

2014

• Final Annexure A document submitted on the 05 November 2014

• Incorporating comments from SANEDI from 06 - 17 November 2014

• SGMM Survey held on the 21 November 2014 and 28 November

2014.

• PFT meeting on the 10th December 2014
