Mining Equipment Onboard Data & Access
1. Acquire unfettered read only access and use of owner/operator data onboard mining equipment
2. Identify and define equipment owner/operator data vs OEM/OTM IP algorithm data
3. Establishment agreement with OEM/OTM
4. Attain public technical access documentation
5. 2 surveys: surface and underground demonstrate this data issue is consistent and a continuing challenge
Onboard Technology & Connectivity
1. Establishment of onboard physical hardware and software connectivity standards or API definitions
2. The technology infrastructure standards or APIs by which owner/operator can access and integrate onboard systems and data
Project: Define and request customer API development from OEM/OTM to allow data to be displayed on generic monitor; case study analysis of success stories from other industries
Operational Safety and Risk Management: Leading Indicators • Handbook for implementing the ICMM Overview
Document • Standardized reporting of Leading Indicators • Corporate safety systems best practice guidelines • Investigating opportunities for global safety survey
• Meeting: Monday, May 6, 2-3 pm ▫ Project development
Underground Mining

What are your major challenges to accessing data across your underground operation(s)?
•Survey April 2013 •CIM, SME, AusIMM email •Response: 23
•Results: to determine projects focus for working group.
Meeting Tuesday, May 7, 1 – 4 MTCC
Situation Awareness • Analyze the effectiveness of information
delivery systems in mining equipment and develop a unified display design, to mitigate against the proliferation of screens within equipment cabs.
• Focus on shovel displays; expected to form the foundation for similar work with other equipment in the future.
Aug. 21-23, 2012
Sept. 5-6, 2012
• Highland Valley Copper Mine - Teck near Kamloops, BC, Canada
• Goldstrike Mine - Barrick near Elko, NV, U.S.A.
• Interviewed 10 Shovel Operators • 3 on-the-job • 4 had ~15 years experience • 2 were new operators
• Visited 4 Shovels
• CAT/Bucyrus (495HR, …) • P&H (4100, 2800) • Observed the operating environment for environmental analysis
• Observed existing systems
• MMS, MotionMetrics, Wenco, CAT CAES, AccuWeigh, P&H/Bucyrus/Komatsu onboard systems, Cameras, Radios
Shovel UI layout – Virtual map & camera tabs
Operator feedback and UI adjustments
• Proposed shovel UI was presented to working group members- SME’s from OEMs/OTMs/mining • Two cognitive walkthroughs were conducted with shovel operators
• 12/04/2012 – Teck • 12/14/2012 – Barrick
• Feedback led to a few adjustments • Customizability • Access to performance statistics
Proof of concept: Common UI for Shovels
• Development resource
• Goal: access/manipulate independent data feeds for visualization on a single unified display
• Break-out group, GMSG Workshop, Wed, May 8, 8:30 - noon
Asset Management & Operations Data needs - operational KPIs
• Operational data requirements and common KPIs for operations
• Development of standard terminology and definitions
• Result: consensus definition for major KPIs and Mining terminology
• Break-out group, GMSG Workshop, Wed, May 8, 8:30 - noon
Priority Initiatives for 2013 • Mirror Committee: ISO TC 82 – Mining (CSA) ▫ Euro-centric: No Canadian, majority OEM ▫ Establish industry support and interest ▫ Fundraising ($80,000 - $100,00 annual)
▫ Input request: importance and priority?
• Other ISO Standards Initiatives: 55 000, TC 127, Autonomy, Automated Data Transfer, etc
