Cherry Creek Post-change Research
• Fewer students reported feeling too sleepy to do their homework for both Middle School (MS) (46% vs. 35%) and High School (HS) (71% vs. 56%).
• When controlling for free/reduced lunch (FRL) status and race, results were similar for HS students; however, sleep duration increased more for MS students who received FRL (19m vs. 10m).
"I don't know how many of our high school students have come up to me and said, 'This has changed my life for the better.' They've told me they're getting up to an hour of additional sleep before school starts," Siegfried said. "That extra sleep makes a real difference in terms of health and wellness. The input from our students and the numbers from this landmark study point to the same conclusion: The change in our start times has been a positive step and benefited our students' everyday routines."

Start Time Task Force Final Recommendations- February 2019
1. Establish policy that beginning in Fall 2020, all start times in Jefferson County Schools start on or after: Middle: 8:00 am and High: 8:30 am.
2. Hire an implementation firm/consultant in the Spring 2019 to begin the process of researching and planning the implementation of the recommended start times.
3. For the interim, have all Jeffco schools start a half hour later for the 2019-2020 school year. Shift all current school schedules a half hour (30 minutes) later than they are currently, starting August 2019.
Note: While the task force prefers that no school starts before 8:30 am, these recommended times have also taken into consideration feedback from the Jeffco community.

Consultant Pre-Routing Preparations
Pre-Routing
● Used Transfinder software to evaluate routes by North, Central, South and West bus terminals
● Evaluated over 1,500 runs* for load counts to see if we could combine runs
● Reduced 90 runs from schools using new proposed later start times
*A run is a segment or leg of a route. A route is a compilation of runs (morning & afternoon) that make up the entire route for the day for a particular driver and bus.

Why
● The time needed for teachers to collaboratively plan, teach, assess and reflect on the authentic and engaging student tasks that are created has significantly increased in the last few years.
● Teacher collaborative planning, which is essential to providing best learning experiences for our students, must take place consistently and uninterrupted during the work day.

Why
● Collaborative Planning/Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are most effective when scheduled weekly.
● Our district calendar no longer schedules K-8 Student Early Release Days. These days were previously used for teacher professional learning and collaborative/individual planning.
● The non-student contact days scheduled during the 2020-2021 school year are used for professional learning as well as individual and collaborative planning (5-7 days total). There is potential to add 2 additional days to expand teacher collaborative planning time.
