Aim of tonight

• Meet tutor and understand their role• Gain an understanding of how to support what

your child is studying• Share information about dates and extra-

curricular offer

More information can be found: -School website -Year 7 Handbook

Helping your child get organised

Before your child goes to school:• Check they have their ID badge, their timetable and the correct exercise books for the

day.

When your child comes home:

• Make sure their ID badge stays in their bag

• Make sure they have checked Show My Homework.

It would be useful if:

• Your child made a spare copy (or copies) of their timetable – this could be kept on the fridge for you to check/given to them if they lose theirs

• A photo was taken of their timetable

• Your child had a checklist of things to ensure they have in their bag before leaving for school in the morning.

Teaching groups

• Form groups for Geography, History, RPE, Art,

Music, Drama, PSHE, Computer Science and

Science

• Smaller mixed classes for DT

• Broad sets for PE

• Teaching groups for MFL: mixed ability based on

single / dual linguists

• Initially in form groups for Maths and English,

then moved into sets.

• Set names not numbers

SEND and differentiation

• Information shared from primary schools

• Pupils with complex additional needs have already been identified to staff and a SEND database with 80 pupils from year 7 has been prepared that all staff can access.

• General advice: allow time for your child to establish friendships and settle into secondary school. Sets will be established over the next month so please give the teachers time to get to know your child and be reassured that teachers or Centre staff will contact you if there are any issues. Teachers are trained to identify issues re SEN.

• Year 7 parents evening is the time to raise any concerns you may have with subject teachers.

• All staff teach pupils in a dyslexic-friendly way;

about one third of pupils have some traits of

dyslexia and a diagnosis of dyslexia does not

mean that pupils will get TA support in lessons.

Staff will differentiate work accordingly and there

is no reason why pupils with dyslexia cannot

reach their potential in mainstream lessons. The

most important thing is for parents to read daily

with their children.

• Pupils with additional needs are expected to

complete homework aimed at their ability level;

please contact subject teachers if you have any

concerns.
