How Sedimentary Rocks Are Formed

For millions of years, wind and water have weathered little pieces of our earth. The little pieces of earth that settle on the bottom of our lakes, oceans and rivers have eroded downstream from where they came from.  Eroded rock which has come down stream, gets deposited and forms layers and layers of rock which eventually become compacted and cemented together and over time becomes a sedimentary rock.

How to identify RocksTo identify a sedimentary rock, look closely at the layers of the rock and usually you should know if it were a Sedimentary Rock because you will be able to see that the layers are made up from things under the water such as sand, salt, tiny rocks, dirt and debris.

Sedimentary rocks are identified by their texture and composition. This is a list of what do identify them by.

Usually contains FossilsOften has layers either flat or

curvedUsually cemented or pressed

together with different pieces.Has a big variety of coloursParticle size might be the

same size or vary.May have worm burrows,

raindrop impressions, cross bedding or mud cracks

Sand Stones

Sandstone is a type of Sedimentary rock made from small grains made of minerals such as quartz and feldspar. Sandstone usually has been formed in layers like in these pictures. They are not only very interesting rocks but useful for building stones.

Lime Stones

Lime Stone is a type of Sedimentary rock that is made of Calcite, which came from Sea beds, lakes and shells. These simulating rocks are excellent building stones for humid locations.

Shale

Shale is the third and the last type of Sedimentary rock it is made of clay that is compacted together with pressure. Bricks can be made of shale and other materials that is fired in a extensive kiln.
