HOCKEY’S MAIN RULES

OFFSIDES

When any member of attacking team precedes the puck over the defending team’s blue line.

OFFSIDE PASS

A player passes the puck from his defending zone to a teammate beyond the red centre line

PENALTIES

MAJOR PENALTY

Called for fighting or when minor penalty is committed with intent to injure

Times given is five minutes

MINOR PENALTY

Called for boarding, charging, cross-checking, elbowing , holding, hooking, high sticking and roughing

Times given is two minutes

MISCONDUCT

Called for various forms of unsportsmanlike behavior

Two minutes

REFEREE’S SIGNALS

BOARDING

Called for driving, throwing, checking or tripping an opponent

CHARGING

Called for running, jumping or charging into an opponent

CROSS-CHECKING

Called when a player delivers a check with both hands on his stick and no part of stick on the ground.

ELBOWING

Called when a player uses his elbow to foul another player.

HIGH STICKING

Called when a player carries or hold his stick above the normal height because it can cause injury to that opponent

MISCONDUCT

Called for various forms of misconduct including the use of abusive language to any person or challenging an official’s ruling
