Reed Johnson …graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a BS in Physics in 1953, completed a year-long course in nuclear engineering at the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology, and in 1962 was awarded the D.Sc in Engineering Physics from UVA. From 1954-57 he worked in the nuclear submarine program, and on the Army Package Power Reactor. He was Project Engineer for the UVA Research Reactor and from 1962-64 Director for the Philippine Research Reactor. Reed was associated with the UVA Nuclear Engineering Program from its beginning in 1957 until the program was ended in 1998. He developed and taught graduate offerings in radiation shielding, nuclear power plant safety and non- destructive testing. >From 1974 until 1991, Reed was a member of the Atomic Safety and Licensing Appeal Panel resolving technical and legal issues in licensing many of the nation’s nuclear power plants. Reed has been associated with the Science of Nuclear Energy and Radiation course for Middle and High School science teachers since its inception in the early 1980s.

Dr. W. Reed Johnson …graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a BS in Physics in 1953, completed a year-long course in nuclear engineering at the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology, and in 1962 was awarded the D.Sc in Engineering Physics from UVA. From 1954-57 he worked in the nuclear submarine program, and on the Army Package Power Reactor.

He was Project Engineer for the UVA Research Reactor and from 1962-64 Director for the Philippine Research Reactor. Reed was associated with the UVA Nuclear Engineering Program from its beginning in 1957 until the program was ended in 1998. He developed and taught graduate offerings in radiation shielding, nuclear power plant safety and non-destructive testing. >From 1974 until 1991, Reed was a member of the Atomic Safety and Licensing Appeal Panel resolving technical and legal issues in licensing many of the nation’s nuclear power plants. Dr. Ross Thomas Mr. Dana Knee …is retired from the Babcock & Wilcox Company in Lynchburg where he held numerous positions including Vice President and Chief Technical Officer. At B&W he served on oversight and review groups at several of the Department of Energy’s National Laboratories. He was one of

…is Co-Lead for the 2012 Technical Program and an Instructor. Dana is active in public education on nuclear science and technology applications through ANS and North American Young Generation in Nuclear, including speaking appearances at Richmond-area schools and Science

Teacher Workshops. Dana was the 2008-09 Chair for the Virginia Section of the American Nuclear Society (VA-ANS) and currently is a Member-at-Large on the VA-ANS Executive Committee. Dana received a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics from the University of Wisconsin (December 1993) and a Master of Business Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University (December 2007). He acquired a Virginia Professional Engineer license in 2001. Dana has 18 years of nuclear power industry experience, including the last 15 years in Dominion's Nuclear Analysis and Fuel department. He currently is the Supervisor of the Nuclear Safety Analysis engineering team, supporting Dominion's seven pressurized water reactors in Virginia, Connecticut and Wisconsin.

Shortly after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in Japan in March 2011, he worked in Japan on the immediate response and longer-term planning for the nuclear accident at Fukushima. Prior to joining B&W he taught engineering and physics at Penn State and the Virginia Military Institute and served as the head of the VMI physics department. Ross has held several offices in the Virginia Section of the American Nuclear Society. He holds engineering degrees from the University of Virginia and Penn State.

Mr. Eugene Grecheck Mr. Brian Meeley …is Vice President Nuclear Development, Dominion Generation. His staff is responsible for new nuclear opportunities for the company, including the engineering and licensing activities related to the potential construction of a new nuclear unit at the North Anna Power Station. He directed Dominion’s

response to the August 2011 earthquake, and has executive responsibility for the company’s response to the new NRC requirements as a result of the Fukushima accident. Grecheck received a BS in Physics and an MS in Nuclear Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He also earned an MBA from VCU, and completed the Executive Program at Darden (UVA). Licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as a senior reactor operator, Grecheck has held a variety of leadership positions in Dominion’s nuclear business, including manager of corporate engineering, Plant Manager at North Anna, and Vice President at Surry and Millstone.

…is Vice President at the Potomac Communications Group (PCG). He has over 20 years of experience in strategic marketing and communications planning and consulting in areas including energy, nuclear power, waste management and information technology. In the nuclear arena, he leads teams in support of federal and state licensing initiatives, opposition and issues research, and grasstops outreach efforts. Other work includes media and spokesperson

training for a variety of clients, including the Idaho National Laboratory and the U.S. Coast Guard. During the Japan nuclear crisis, Brian supplied media relations support and message development for the Nuclear Energy Institute on issues including industry response actions, radiation basics, emergency planning and nuclear facility safety and security upgrades. He provided messages and coaching for experts appearing in a series of informational videos on nuclear energy topics.

As part of a public education campaign, Brian is leading a team in the development of a Nuclear Energy Basics Encyclopedia for an overseas client launching a new nuclear energy program. Brian is an active member in the American Nuclear Society and the North American Young Generation in Nuclear. He holds a B.A. from Muhlenberg College.

Dr. Gary C. Tepper Mr. Carl Tarantino has been employed with Dominion Resources, Inc. for 29 years as a Power Reactor Health Physicist, Carl Tarantino, certified by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists and American Board of Health Physics, works in the Corporate Nuclear Licensing & Ops. Support Department with primary responsibilities for providing technical support/oversight of the fleet’s Radiation

Protection programs, managing the Groundwater Protection Program, and coordinating the company’s nuclear safety review activities. Upon obtaining his BA in Biology from St. John Fisher College, Rochester, NY, in 1975 Carl was commissioned in the US Navy’s Medical Service Corps as a Radiation Health Officer, serving with the Navy’s Environmental Health Center, performing radiological and industrial hazards evaluations for fleet and shore based naval installations. Carl received his MS in Health Physics from the University of Florida’s Environmental Engineering Program, Gainesville, and FL. in 1981 and received his MBA from Averett University, Danville, VA, in 2004. An active plenary member of the national Health Physics Society (HPS) since 1981, the local Virginia chapter since 1983, and the Virginia section, American Nuclear Society since 1998, Carl has a passion for teaching Nuclear Science and promoting career interests in Health Physics. Carl was the Science Teacher Workshop (STW) Coordinator for his local chapter for seven years, continues as staff presenter on Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation for annual STWs, was member and chair of the HPS Science Support Committee, and currently fills a three year term on the HPS Board of Directors.

…graduated with honors and high distinction from Penn State with a B.S. degree in Engineering Science. He then received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Physics from the University of California at San Diego. Dr. Tepper is currently the Chair and a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Prior to

joining VCU, Dr. Tepper performed research at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR) in San Diego. His research focuses on the investigation and development of advanced materials, devices and integrated engineering systems for chemical sensing, air filtration and gamma radiation detection.

Mr. James Miller Dr. Brian Hinderliter …holds a B.A. degree in physics from Shippensburg University and a M.S. degree in nuclear engineering from the Pennsylvania State University. He has also completed graduate work in astrophysics at the University of Maryland and Penn State, and is a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Recently he retired for the second time from Dominion Virginia Power where he spent 36 years in the Nuclear Analysis and Fuel department. He is presently an adjunct professor and instructor in the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University where he has taught courses in introductory nuclear engineering, reactor theory, the nuclear fuel cycle, and the economics of nuclear power.

…is presently an Associate Professor in the Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Department at Virginia Commonwealth University, having moved from a Research Scientist position in Coatings and Polymeric Materials Department at North Dakota State

University. His Ph.D. research was focused on phase growth in thermal barrier hard coatings at University of Virginia in the Materials Science and Engineering Department. Prior to returning to UVA, Brian worked as a nuclear engineer and Health Physicist at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory after completing M.S. in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics and M.S. in Medical Physics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Brian is a Certified Health Physicist and a Professional Engineer (Nuclear).

Mr. Chris Wells Mr. Brian Vitiello …graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a MS/BS in Nuclear Engineering in 2008. His master’s thesis focused on the safety analysis of converting the Wisconsin research reactor from High Enriched Uranium to Low Enriched Uranium fuel. Since graduation, Brian has worked the last 4 years at Dominion

…is a graduate of the University of Florida with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Nuclear Engineering. Since 2000, he has worked at Dominion doing Methods Development work in the Nuclear Core Design group. His duties include development of reactor physics methodologies, spent fuel

pool criticality analysis, computer software design for reactor physics applications, startup physics testing, and flux map analysis. Chris enjoys discussing nuclear subjects with students of all ages and has participated in speaking engagements at Richmond area schools and Science Museum of Virginia events.

Ms. Carter Bailey Mr. Scott Luchau …is a newer member to ANS and the nuclear industry as whole. She started working for Aerotek after graduating from Randolph Macon College in 2009. Aerotek is the nation’s largest recruiting and staffing firm and the top provider of contract engineering. Carter is an Account Manager for Aerotek’s

…is a University of Wisconsin -Madison graduate with a B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering. After graduating in 2006, Scott accepted a position with Dominion's Nuclear Analysis and Fuel group as a Safety Analysis Engineer. In 2011, he took on

additional duties as the communications lead for the Dominion response to the events at Fukushima Daiichi and is now a member of the Fuel Project Engineering group. Scott is currently obtaining his MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Scott served as the Fundraising Chair for the current Science Teacher Workshop.

Energy Services division throughout the state of Virginia. She and her team support the recruiting efforts for companies within the power generation industry, from traditional, renewable and nuclear power. She has worked with a large number of local companies within the nuclear industry, from AREVA, Babcock and Wilcox, Dominion, Newport News Industrial and Huntington Ingalls.

She began teaching ten years ago, after working as a sales, marketing, and customer service representative at MassTech, a mass spectrometry company She received her B.S. degree in Chemistry and Theatre from Mary Baldwin College, her M.S. degree in Analytical Chemistry from Louisiana State University, and her M. Eng. Degree in Nuclear Engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a current member of the Society of Women Engineers.

Mr. Patrick M. Wales …has over six years of experience in the field of environmental and exploration geology. He is a geologist and the project manager for Virginia Uranium, Inc. Prior to his work at Virginia Uranium, Wales served as Manager of Environmental Services for an

engineering firm in Danville, Virginia. A native of Danville, Virginia, Wales holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from Radford University (cum laude) and a Master of Science Degree in Geology from the University of Mississippi. He is an Executive Committee member of the Virginia Section of the American Nuclear Society, is active in the North American Young Generation in Nuclear, and represents the Nuclear Energy Institute as a speaker for the Clean Energy America speakers bureau.
