EDITORIALThough we made a big hoo-hahabout the 20th Cleethorpes lastyear, this year is actually the 20thanniversary of our auspicious soulgathering (ask your dad). I can think of no better way tocelebrate it than by bringing oneof mine and so many people’sfavourite singers, Bettye Swannto perform her soul set at theBeachcomber.

Apart from never having appearedoutside the USA, this is Bettye’s firstappearance anywhere in manydecades. Like many acts, she becamedisillusioned with the music businessafter a dozen years of hard work anddraining schedules, with precious littleto show for it. Though several of herrecords were successful throughoutthat momentous period, the way actswere treated by their employers wasrarely decent enough to maintain a career for life. Bettye withdrew frompublic life preferring to concentrate onher family and faith.

The facts that her real namediffered from her stage name and thatshe had relocated to Las Vegas meantthat few of her fans could tell her howmuch her music meant to them. All the while her tracks were beingadmired and sometimes DJed witharound the world, particularly inEurope. Over the years each releaseearned its own set of admirers fromthe mid 60s dance classic ‘Make MeYours’ to the erstwhile Northern Soulof ‘The Man Who Said No’. Southernsoul fans adored her Capitol and Famesides such as ‘My Heart Is Closed ForThe Season’ and once she moved to

Atlantic she managed to satisfy thewhole range of soul music lovers withnumbers like ‘Kiss My Love Goodbye’,‘Today I Started Loving You Again’ andthe relatively recently discoveredmaster tape of ‘I Want Sunday BackAgain’.

We must thank the journalist andcompiler of Bettye’s Capitolrecordings onto CD, Tim Tooher forfirst making Bettye aware of herpopularity and the esteem she washeld in over here. DJ and producer Ian Levine also courted Bettye for his“Strange World Of Northern Soul”video production and made afavourable impression on her eventhough the filming did not eventuallyhappen. The main thank you thoughmust go to my employers AceRecords who fortuitously boughtDolphins Of Hollywood record labelsand masters in 2000 which includedRuth Dolphin’s mid 60s imprint Moneyrecords. Those recordings included allof Bettye’s early music including therecord that she will forever beassociated with across the world‘Make Me Yours’. Having re-released all of the tracks she cut for Money,Ace had a royalty cheque or twoawaiting Bettye but no forwardingaddress. With the very generous helpof firstly Al Scott, Bettye’s firstproducer and mentor at Money andArthur Wright her arranger and co-writer on ‘You Gave Me Love’, wewere able to contact Bettye and payour dues. After so many years ofmistrust and non-appearing cheques, this simple, routine act endeared herto our label and paved the way for hertrip to Cleethorpes. For me and many

of the southern contingency Bettye isa particularly apt singer for thiscelebration as it was co-founder of the6TS Rhythm ‘n’ Soul club RandyCozens who turned us on to many ofher magnificent Atlantic sides.

Ace/Kent continues to support ourcauses by working in the musicbusiness honestly and with respect tothe music makers. Apart fromindulging me in issuing theCleethorpes story CD last year whichfeatured 15,000 words of anecdotesand memories of this journey that we have shared, they continue to backprojects as diverse as the Detroit PiedPiper master tape releases, DarrowFletcher’s unissued Crossover LP indigital format, Kent Harris’ R&B andRomark Soul CDs, spotlights on thetalents of great soul songwriters suchas Phillip Mitchell and beautiful vinyl inthe form of Ty Karim’s album and thenew Pied Piper label and further Kent

45s. In fact we celebrated 30 years ofthe label with a great night out at the100 Club last November with Darrowperforming his best material in front ofa superb band.

The 100 Club is still at it, as areseveral of its customers. We celebrateour 34th anniversary in September. We made a concession to old age(mine) in now opening the doors at11pm instead of 10pm (except for theanniversary which is still 10pm)thereby knocking an hour off whenmost people were in the Blue Postsanyway and easing the pressure on myancient and sizeable frame.

Writing this has put all the worriesand fretting of adylastminute.com intoperspective and now we can lookforward to another terrific sojourn bythe soulful seaside.

For Dancers Only

When Bettye joined Money shechose Bettye Swann as herprofessional name as she thoughtpeople might associate her realname in a potentially negative waywith boxing and “heavyweights”.Bettye explained to John Abbey, as reported in Blues & Soul #85 ofJune 1972, how she came up withthe name, saying “it went back tomy high school days when I sang ina group called the Fawns.Somewhere in my mind there wasa link with a swan. And I just addedthe “e” to Betty to be different, I guess!”

Her first recorded song ‘Don’tWait Too Long’ was, like themajority of her Money sides, self-penned. This early material wasrecorded at the legendary GoldStar studios in Los Angeles ontheir 3-track machine. Bettye’sMoney recordings were arrangedby Arthur Wright.

‘Don’t Wait Too Long’ went intothe soul charts in February 1965and reached #27, a more than

creditable return for a first release. Two further singles failed toregister but May 1967 saw theentry of ‘Make Me Yours’, Bettye’sbiggest hit, into the US soul charts. The song was reach #1 and alsomade it to #21 in the US popcharts. It was recorded on 3February 1967 on the 4-trackmachine at Audio Arts CustomRecording Studio at 5611 MelroseAvenue in Hollywood. ArthurWright remembers using theAudio Arts group the Incrediblesfor the superb backing vocals.Much of Bettye’s Money Recordsmaterial was recorded from thenon either at Audio Arts or later on4 and 8-track at TTG Inc’s Sunset-Highland Studios at 1441 NMcCadden Place, again inHollywood. Reinforced by thechart success, Money Recordsreleased an album under the“Make Me Yours” song’s name. Itwas issued in both mono and in aquite rarer stereo version. Thefollow up to the hit single ‘Fall InLove With Me’ reached # 36 R&Blater that year but the subsequent

Bettye Swann was born Betty Jean Champion in October 1944 inShreveport, Louisiana and was brought up in the locality. In 1964 shemoved to Los Angeles, staying with relatives whilst she pursued hermusical career. The relocation proved successful, she was presented toMoney label owner Ruth Dolphin’s right hand man DJ Al Scott whowas impressed by her talents. On her twentieth birthday she signedwith Money Records.

release the excellent ‘You Gave MeLove’ failed to sell as hoped for.

In 1968, Bettye moved toAthens, Georgia after marrying hermanager, George Barton. Partingcompany with Money Records, shesigned with Capitol in October1968 where her producer wasWayne Shuler, son of Eddie Shulerof Goldband Records. At Capitol, she recorded fewer of her ownsongs and more country-influencedmaterial, reflected in two well-respected albums - “Don’t YouEver Get Tired of Hurting’ Me?”and “The Soul View Now” thatfeatured a big R&B hit version ofHank Cochran’s ‘Don’t Touch Me’.That was the only Capitol track tochart though ‘My Heart Is ClosedFor The Season’ gained a UKrelease and many admirers overhere. Bettye then switched to RickHall’s Fame label in 1971 while itwas being distributed by Capitol.

She then moved to Atlantic, butstill retained the Fame link, recording at Muscle Shoals whereshe cut the #16 soul hit, ‘Victim OfA Foolish Heart’, the first of half adozen hits for her with the label.Bettye also recorded at Atlantic inNew York City, and at the famousSigma Sound Studios in Philadelphiawhere the Northern Soul biggie‘Kiss My Love Goodbye’ wascaptured. Bettye’s last visit to thecharts was a duet with Sam Deeson ‘Storybook Children’ in 1976for the Big Tree label, an Atlanticdistributed imprint. Her lastrelease was ‘Heading In The RightDirection’ issued by Atlantic inAugust 1976.

Soul fans were left to enjoy astring of fine singles and three LPs,but the recordings were not quitefinished. When Ace bought theMoney masters and researched thetapes a first “Don’t Wait TooLong” album tape that had beenshelved was discovered. Sometracks were used on later 45s andthe “Make Me Yours” LP butalternate versions of ‘I Will NotCry’ and a faster take on ‘I ThinkI’m Falling In Love’ were found as

well as alternate vocals that wereadded to the Kent CD 197compilation of her Moneyrecordings. The only song that wastotally unreleased was a superb, plaintive number called ‘The DanceIs Over’ which was featured onthat CD but a better moredeveloped take was subsequentlyfound and issued on “The Soul OfMoney” CDKEND 267 as well ason the now deleted Kent Selectvinyl 45 CITY 003.

Meanwhile the musicologists atWarners in the US wereresearching the Atlantic tapes andmore previously unheard materialwas revealed. This included thesublime ‘I Want Sunday BackAgain’, which eventually featuredon the Rhino CD “You BetterBelieve It Vol 2” in 2005. Sincethen it has had much airplay onsoul radio stations as well as somediscerning Modern room action.

Soul fans’ respect andadmiration for Bettye’s work hastaken a while to convey itself fullyto this great singer but that will beacknowledged and rewarded for allconcerned at Cleethorpes 2013.
