Sometimes called Coining, Spooning, or Scraping,

Gua Sha is an ancient technique from China that is used on different

parts of the body to improve disease and pain conditions. Gua Sha can be

translated to mean “scraping away the fever” for its usefulness in

cold and u therapy. The technique is easy to learn and has a variety of applications, but

what we're focused on here is Facial Gua Sha, a very effective anti-aging technique.

Facial Gua Sha improves blood circulation, relieves edema and swelling, builds collagen,

breaks down scar tissue, activates the cells, and has a de-toxifying effect

on tissue.

Gua Sha Explained: How to Perform the Technique

Which Tool is Best for Me?

First you need to choose which tool you will use to apply the technique to your face. Our number one choice is a metal lid from a jam jar with smooth rounded edges.

The third choice of tool you probably already have in your pocket! You can use either a quarter or a dollar coin.

You could also choose a porcelain soup spoon which is typically sold in Asian markets for about a dollar. You may have seen these spoons in Asian restaurants or you may already have one at home. The edge of this kind of spoon is smooth and not sharp.

Start with a clean face and neck and apply your favorite moisturizer. If the moisturizer is absorbed into your skin, apply more. You want to create a slightly lubricated feel to your skin. Vitamin E oil can also be used if you like. The key is for the tool to glide, but not to have so much moisturizer that it is too slippery.

Now use the tool of your choice to gently scrape your skin. Use the edge of the tool at about a fteen degree angle in the direction you are scraping. Use moderate pressure. You should be able to feel pressure but no real pain.

There are ve different zones on the face and neck that you should cover. You may choose to focus on a single area and alternate which area you focus on each day. Or you may want to cover your whole face every day. Adjust the zones treated according to your analysis of which area needs the most attention. Always start in the center of your face and move to the left and right. Use a sweeping, upward movement, as we want to lift the skin and muscles, to train them against gravity. You can scrape the same area several times. Quickly scraping the whole face will take you about a minute. If you have more time, you can spend up to 10 minutes on this ritual.

Facial Gua Sha ZonesZone 1: Forehead – from the middle to each side (cover both upper and lower forehead)

Zone 2: Cheek – from the nose to the ear

Zone 3: Chin – from middle of the chin to the sides

Zone 4: Jawbone – from the bottom toward the ear on each side

Zone 5: Neck – from the collarbone to the jawbone (upward movement)

The Procedure: Easy & Fast

Immediately after this ritual your skin will look fresher and more plump. The skin color may turn pink from the increased blood ow. As you practice Facial Gua Sha daily you will notice amazing changes to your skin. Wrinkles will grow ner and even disappear as you stimulate collagen production. Your double chin or sagging jawline will begin to tighten. Uneven skin tones, scars and blemishes will begin to disappear.

Bonus Effects of Facial Gua Sha Because you are stimulating the acupuncture points on the face, you will notice improved health in other areas, too!

Clearing of sinus congestion Reduced headaches Reduced stress Improved sleep Improved digestion and elimination

When to Avoid Facial Gua ShaWhile we are unaware of any harmful effects of Facial Gua Sha, it is always best to use caution if you have a serious health condition or an especially sensitive constitution. Using the technique is not recommended when there is broken skin, pimples, moles, or skin cancer present on the face. If you have sensitive skin, proceed with caution.

Access to Professional Gua Sha ToolsThere are professional Gua Sha tools that can be purchased inexpensively in Chinatown shops or online. These tools are often made from horn or jade. We love their aesthetics, but they perform the same exact function as a jar lid or a spoon. Many acupuncturists actually prefer using the jar lid—it's all a matter of personal preference .

How Will I know It's Working?

There is a wide variety of different gua sha tools. Here is a photo of

what some professional tools look like.
