Who’s Who in the Cast (cont.)Stephanie Foisy (Orpheus/Loud Stone - ASL) is excited to be making her first appearance on the City Lights stage. She has been working as an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter since 1994, primarily in the academic setting at Ohlone College. About 20 years ago, she combined her love of serving the d/Deaf community and her passion for theatre by becoming a theatrical interpreter for various professional and community theaters in the Bay Area. Stephanie feels that the expressiveness of ASL helped her transition to being on the stage (as opposed to in front of it). She has acted and directed for community theatres in Gilroy (her hometown) and Morgan Hill. Stephanie is honored to be a part of such an amazing cast.

Erik Gandolfi (Interesting Man/Lord of the Underworld - English) studied theatre at Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts and did his undergraduate work at Santa Clara University. He has worked at PCPA, San Jose Stage, Jewel Theatre Company, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Sierra Repertory Theatre, VITA Shakespeare, Theatre Artists of Marin, Pacific Rep, Calaveras Rep, Actor’s Theatre, and MCT. Notable roles include Mark Antony in Julius Caesar, Lennie in Of Mice and Men, and Henry II in The Lion in Winter. Erik also worked for the Arts-in-Corrections program through the William James Association, directing plays and short videos with the inmate population at Mule Creek State Prison. At City Lights, he has appeared in Rapture, Blister, Burn; Alabama Story; The Siegel; and God of Carnage. Erik is always delighted to work at this wonderful, engaging, and inspiring place.

Brian Herndon (Father - English) is grateful to return to City Lights after playing Shylock last year in The Merchant of Venice. He has appeared often with TheatreWorks in both mainstage and New Works Festival productions, most recently as Collins in Pride and Prejudice. Favorite roles include Scrooge in Scrooge in Love, Leo Bloom in The Producers, and Mortimer Mortimer in Failure: A Love Story. Brian has worked at Marin Theatre Company, San Jose Stage, Shotgun Players, San Francisco Playhouse, and many other theaters in the Bay Area. He holds his MFA in Acting from the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and studied at Dell’Arte and Cornell University. He thanks his father for being his most dedicated fan.

Dane K. Lentz (Interesting Man/Lord of the Underworld/Big Stone - ASL) is making his CLTC debut. He was last seen as Corny Collins in Hairspray (Stage 1/Ohlone Summerfest). Past credits include Shrek (Shrek, TVRT); West Side Story (Riff, Stage 1); Seussical (Horton, Crosslight); Bonnie & Clyde (Buck Barrow, Stage 1); The 1940s Radio Hour (Lou Cohn, SJMT); The Addams Family (Mal Beineke, Stage 1); Rent, Sweeney Todd, Legally Blonde, and Grand Hotel (Sunnyvale Players); and Les Misérables, In The Heights, and Ragtime (Stage 1). An alumnus of San Jose State, Dane was also featured in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Flute/Cobweb) and the West Coast premiere of The Lieutenant of Inishmore (Joey). Dane works full-time as an ASL Interpreter and his talents have been seen on ESPN and in various houses all over the Bay, including Ray of Light Theatre, Broadway by the Bay, Altarena Playhouse, and several national tour performances. www.danelentz.com

Lauren Rhodes (Eurydice - English) is thrilled to make her City Lights debut with this amazing team of artists, in one of her favorite plays of all time. Favorite past work includes The Foreigner (Catherine) and Amadeus (Constanze) at Hillbarn Theatre, and Sense and Sensibility (Elinor), Lend Me a Tenor (Maggie), and the title role in Sylvia at Coastal Repertory Theatre. Lauren holds a BA in Theater from Occidental College. She also studied at the London Dramatic Academy and at A.C.T.’s Summer Training Congress.

Spencer Stevenson (Father/Little Stone - ASL) is excited to be in another show at City Lights, having appeared as Rod in Calendar Girls. Other favorite roles include Drummond in Inherit the Wind, Mr. van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank, and Markinson in A Few Good Men. A Bay Area native, Spencer received his theatre training at Studio A.C.T., and he is a certified ASL interpreter.

John earned his Master’s degree from the University of Washington in 2015. In the area, he has designed for CMTSJ, San Jose Dance Co., San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Stanford Repertory Theater, San Jose State University, Silicon Valley Shakespeare, The Dragon Theater, The Pear Avenue Theater, and Hillbarn. Ron Gasparinetti (Resident Scenic Designer/Production Manager) also serves as City Lights’ Technical Director and Facilities Manager. His first show with City Lights was What the Butler Saw in 2006 and he has designed almost every show here since then. He has been honored five times as a TBA Award finalist for Outstanding Scenic Design; four of those designs, Amadeus, Truce: A Christmas Wish from the Great War, Rapture, Blister, Burn, and The Merchant of Venice, were seen right here on the City Lights stage. His design for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at Los Altos Stage Company garnered him the TBA Award in 2015. In April 2016 he was honored with the title of Artist Laureate by SVCreates. Ron looks forward to serving City Lights for many more years to come. To see more of his work, visit him at www.TheSetGuy.com or follow him on Instagram.

Noëlle GM Gibbs (Assistant Director/Choreographer) is so happy to be working alongside Lisa Mallette and the talented team of Eurydice. At City Lights, Noëlle’s directed I & You and was part of the Lights Up! Festival of New Plays for two years. Noëlle is the Producing Artistic Director of

From the DirectorFor years I have wanted to mount a bilingual production, one in both English and American Sign Language. ASL is not only a beautiful language, but it is also inherently theatrical. The art of live theater lies not just in what you say, but how you say it. It is something you see as well as hear; facial expressions, gestures, and movement of all kinds are every bit as important as the spoken word.

At City Lights, engagement is at the core of all our work, and I am interested in raising the level of engagement with this story. When a play is interpreted in the traditional manner for Deaf audience members, an interpreter is usually placed off to the side, or there are sub- or supertitles to read as the play is performed. This prevents complete engagement with the characters on stage and immersion in the story they are telling. So I thought, what if . . . ?

It took a long time to find the right play for this concept. I knew it had to be one we would want to do anyway. I passed on many plays when I realized, for example (to cite just one essential problem) that they required too many props: the actors’ hands had to be free to sign. Yes, this is an ancient story, but this telling is, at last, told from the female perspective (and as it happens by one of my favorite living American female playwrights). The play is a poem with fantastical elements and vivid, visual storytelling that stimulates the imagination, so it lends itself perfectly to ASL storytelling. It is also a story about struggling to connect, to communicate, which makes it all the more suitable for this production. And with it, I want to build a bridge between communities that might not normally connect or communicate on a daily basis. I believe our hearing audiences will be drawn to ASL, especially when they realize that it is simply a mode of communication. Much of it, I have learned through this process, is completely understandable even if you don’t speak the language. All you have to do is “listen.”

There have been challenges in producing the play in this way, but they have been worth it. I hope you enjoy it and become fully engaged in the story whether you are Deaf, hearing-impaired, or hearing.

Her plays have been internationally produced and translated into Polish, Russian, Spanish, Norwegian, Korean, German, and Arabic. “I try to interpret how people subjectively experience life,” she has said. “Everyone has a great, horrible opera inside him.”

Christina received her MA in Creative Producing from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and currently serves as Assistant Company Manager at the American Conservatory Theater.

Pat Tyler (Costume Designer) is delighted to design costumes at City Lights where she won a 2015 TBA Award for Costume Design for Amadeus. Pat has designed props and costumes for many Bay Area theaters including The Pear, Lyric Theatre, Los Altos Stage Co., and Palo Alto Players. She has appeared as an actress on many of those stages as well. Who’s Who at City LightsLisa Mallette (Executive Artistic Director) has been at the helm of City Lights Theater Company since 2001. Under her leadership, the company has experienced nearly two decades of uninterrupted artistic and administrative development, and it continues to grow and earn widespread public and industry acclaim for innovative management, fiscal responsibility, and artistic reach. Lisa has overseen the successful staging of over 100 provocative and acclaimed productions during her tenure, and she has directed or appeared in nearly three dozen. She chairs both the Theatre Bay Area board of directors and the TBA Theatre Services Committee, she sits on the Leigh Weimers Emerging Artists Selection Committee of the San José Rotary, she is a 2009 graduate of the esteemed Community Leadership San José program, and she is a 2014 Silicon Valley Artist Laureate. Lisa is a widely recognized expert and frequently sought speaker on strategic planning, audience engagement, board development, and team motivation. She lives in San Mateo with her two daughters, Sophie and Olivia.

Anne Younan (General Manager) has been a member of the City Lights team for over twenty years – most recently as Development Director from 2015-2018, and General Manager as of the 2017-18 season. For Anne and City Lights, it all began 30 years ago when she appeared in A Girl’s Guide to Chaos, followed quickly by Mrs. California, Remembrance, Joined at the Head, Definitely Not a Christmas Carol, Nutcracker This!, and Circles. Other favorite turns on the City Lights stage include Birth, Dead Man Walking, and most recently as the spunky, mischievous, ringleader Chris in 2016’s Calendar Girls. She thanks her husband, Paul, and two children, Sarah and Jake, for encouraging her to follow her bliss by working for a company that continues to inspire her and so many others in the valley. She thanks you for supporting live theater in San Jose!

Julie Bell Petrak (Development Director) is the newest face at City Lights, having relocated to the Bay Area from the East Coast in 2017. Julie enjoyed a 25-year career in New York and Connecticut serving as a board member, director, educator, and actor for numerous theatre companies. She was also a guest lecturer for Borough of Manhattan Community College/CUNY. The 2019-20 season promises to be another exciting, prosperous year for City Lights -- and if you see Julie around the theater, please say hello! She lives in Santa Cruz with her husband, Chris, and their two dogs.

Rebecca Wallace (Marketing Director) is a writer, actor, and former longtime Bay Area newspaper journalist. Most recently, she was the arts and entertainment editor at the Palo Alto Weekly, working with a team of other scribes to write about theater, music, dance, and visual art in the Palo Alto/Stanford area. During that time, she was chosen for a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship with the NEA’s Arts Journalism Institute at Columbia University. On stage, Rebecca has performed at many local theater companies and a few smoky Hungarian bars—she spent a few years in Budapest, where she sang with a country-western band. She now focuses on telling City Lights’ world of stories . . . that is, when she isn’t singing showtunes with husband Ron to their young son, Sagan.

Ron Gasparinetti (Production Manager/Technical Director/Resident Scenic Designer) hails originally from Newark, NJ, and has been part of the Bay Area theater community for 21 years now. He not only serves as City Lights’ Resident Scenic Designer but also holds the positions of Production Manager, Technical Director, and Facilities Manager. Ron became a part-time employee for the company in 2012 and has since graduated to the full time positions he currently holds. His first show with City Lights was What the Butler Saw in 2006 and he has designed almost every show here since then. He has has been honored four times as a TBA Award finalist for Outstanding Scenic Design; four of those nominated designs, Amadeus, Truce: A Christmas Wish from the Great War, and Rapture, Blister, Burn, and The Merchant of Venice, were presented right here at City Lights. His design for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at Los Altos Stage Company garnered him the TBA Award in 2015. In April 2016 he was honored with the title of Artist Laureate by SVCreates. Ron looks forward to serving City Lights for many more years to come. To see more of his work, visit his website www.TheSetGuy.com or follow him on Instagram.

Amoreena Lucero (Business Manager) joined the City Lights team in 2014. A Bay Area native, she began her accounting career in 1995, working for a small CPA firm in Los Gatos. After welcoming her daughter into the world, and feeling the need for more work-life balance, she became self-employed and spent time volunteering in children’s and arts organizations. She was actively involved in Shoestring Theatre Company for eight years, both onstage and off, eventually becoming the Managing Director. Working on the City Lights team has reconnected her with theater, and she loves watching the development from an idea to a performance onstage. When she isn’t crunching numbers, you will find Amoreena in the kitchen, honing her culinary skills and sharing her love of cooking with others.
