Welcome

Presents

The Tabard TheaTre company

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Artistic Director

Wlhen I first heard of the play The Cemetery Club, the title alone made me curious as to what it was about. Then I read it!!! Oh my goodness — the script was one of the funniest I’d ever read. Charming, delightful, laugh-

inducing, all the while causing reflection.

The characters in this play offer us all the opportunity to ponder the choices available when a loved one passes on — by death, or by relocating to another part of the world! The bottom line is that how we handle their transition and the effect that change has on our lives is a choice. Often that choice takes courage. And that’s what we see in this touching comedy: characters exploring and making the courageous choice to move on with their own lives after having their lives changed by the passing of a loved one. We’ve all been there.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “You’ll die laughing!” We even used it to promote this show — it’s a comedy that revolves around death! The Internet offers, “This hyperbolic expression was used by Shakespeare in The Taming of the Shrew (3:2): ‘Went they not quickly, I should die with laughing.’ ” We can see, then, that this phrase has been part of our culture and understanding for many centuries.

I dare say there isn’t a one of us who finds death funny. So, in our efforts to understand it, we explore it through humor. It is in that vein that we offer this comedy about a Cemetery Club.

The designated non-profit for this production is Heart of the Valley Services for Seniors, Inc., for the work they do providing services to our older community.

For now, sit back and enjoy the journey our Cemetery Club characters take.

From Nick Nichols, Executive Director

You probably know that ticket sales cover only a portion of what it costs to produce our wonderful shows, educational programs, and events. For the rest, Tabard, like most non-profit theatres, relies on donations from people

like you. What you may not know, however, is that you can support Tabard — at no cost to you — by using AmazonSmile. The next time you plan to shop on Amazon, go to smile.amazon.com and select The Tabard Theatre Company as your preferred charitable organization. It’s the same Amazon you know. Same products, same prices, same service. The only difference is that every time you make a purchase, Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible purchases to Tabard. In this way you can really make a difference and help us continue to produce great shows like The Cemetery Club. Thank you and enjoy the show! Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Helena G. Clarkson (Lucille) returns to Tabard after Edith Stein. She has performed for theater companies all over the Bay Area including Broadway West, Coastal Rep, Dragon, Lyric, Pear, Renegade Theatre Experiment, and Santa Clara Players. She received a B.A. from Santa Clara University in 2007 (double major in theater and English), after completing two A.A. degrees at Foothill College (theater arts and human performance). Helena thanks her son for supporting her every endeavor and everyone here for supporting live theater!!

Valerie Doyle (Mildred) discovered acting later in life and has been having a blast ever since! Mostly, she has done annual productions through Pioneer High School to benefit their Drama Department. Her favorite roles have been Sue in Bells Are Ringing and Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady, in which she starred along with her husband and her son. This will be Valerie’s second Tabard production; she was previously seen here in The Elves and the Shoemaker.

Charlotte Jacobs (Ida) is delighted to be joining Tabard Theatre for the first time. Favorite previous roles include Sister Robert Anne in Nunsense (Palo Alto Players), Clairee in Steel Magnolias and Kate in Brighton Beach Memoirs (Coastal Rep), Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret (Saratoga Drama Group), Esther in Breaking Up is Hard to Do (West Valley Light Opera), and Mama Rose in Gypsy and Golde in Fiddler on the Roof (Chanticleers).

Elizabeth Lowenstein (Doris) is thrilled to be back at Tabard for The Cemetery Club, after being last seen by Tabard audiences as the English housekeeper in Mr. Pim Passes By. Having served in similar roles in many other theater productions, she’s grateful to director Kevin Kirby for bringing her out of the kitchen to be with such a fun cast and crew. Many thanks also to Cathy Cassetta for making this opportunity possible, and to Jeff Swan, our intrepid lighting designer and light of Elizabeth’s life.

Bob Visini (Sam) brings over 40 years of experience to Tabard. He previously appeared here in Miracle on 34th Street and Hot ‘n’ Cole. Bob’s many roles include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Lawrence Jameson); Promises, Promises (Dr. Dreyfuss); The Music Man (Harold Hill); The Producers (Roger DeBris); Beauty and the Beast (Lumiere); Bye, Bye, Birdie (Mr. MacAfee); La Cage aux Folles (Georges); and Annie (Daddy Warbucks). Bob is a semi-retired marketing executive and lives in Sunnyvale.

Laura Carlsen (Properties) is pleased to be back as part of the Tabard team. She retired “a long time ago” as a supervisor for SJPD. She has always loved theatre, especially working and running props, which she has done for over 25 shows with South Bay Musical Theatre and is still LOVING it! She dedicates this show to Lupe Diaz, her dear friend who has passed away; Laura worked many of those shows with Lupe, including some for Tabard, for which she feels privileged.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer) is a theatre/television veteran and entrepreneur who created/produced/co-hosted the weekly TV program Theater This Week in the 1990s before founding Tabard in 2001. She has created and/or written and directed a handful of productions for Tabard, including the most recent Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey. In her non-theatre time, Cathy teaches yoga for seniors at Joint Venture Churches in Almaden, The Sea Ranch, and periodically in Anchor Bay.

Joe Cassetta (Set Construction) continues to lead Tabard’s technical team, which he has done since the company was founded in 2001. With a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A. from Santa Clara University, Joe’s steady and skilled leadership has led to Tabard’s increased ability to explore and expand what we do technically.

James Creer (Co-Producer) is familiar to Tabard audiences for his many appearances on the Tabard stage. As Tabard associate producer, he has assisted producing Tabard mainstage shows since October 2015 and produced Tabard’s 2016 summer youth/mentor production Alice in Wonderland. Most recently, he directed The Great Relative, one of the ten-minute plays in 10 in 10: 2017. With a background in music, James leads the gospel choir at Campbell United Methodist Church.

John DiLoreto (Sound Designer) is Tabard’s chief audio engineer and has designed sound for over 30 Tabard shows since 2008. He has also designed sound for TheatreWorks, City Lights, South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Sunnyvale Community Players, and various clubs and bands for over 30 years. He is also a former record producer, recording studio owner, and keyboardist in numerous rock bands and in theatre orchestras. While at M.I.T., he studied acoustics with Professor Bose, and he holds an M.Eng. from U.C. Berkeley and an M.B.A. from Stanford. By day, he is Tabard’s operations director.

Kevin Kirby (Director) makes his Tabard directorial debut with this production, though he has appeared on Tabard’s stage in Follies, The Story of My Life, Making God Laugh, and Miracle on 34th Street. Prior directing credits include musicals (Falsettos, Forever Plaid), comedies (You Can’t Take It With You, The Dining Room), and dramas (Night Sky, Terra Nova). Kevin is also an occasional theatre reviewer for the Palo Alto Weekly. He is thrilled to be directing at Tabard and to be working with such a fantastically talented cast and crew.

Charlynn Knighton (Production Manager) most recently directed Tabard’s production of A Dickens of a Christmas Mashup and one of the plays in 10 in 10: 2017. With a B.S. in music and theatre, Charlynn has worked across the U.S. and the Bay Area with Millbrook Playhouse, TheatreWorks, Broadway San Jose, San Jose Rep, West Valley Light Opera, and Portola Valley Theatre Conservatory in a variety of technical and creative positions. A Tabard associate artistic director and production manager, she thanks her family for their constant love and support along this journey!

Robert Lewis (Board Operator) returns after stage-managing Death Takes A Holiday and Homeward Bound and working in technical roles for most of the shows in the last two seasons. A New Jersey native and electrical engineer by education, Robert is now a 27-year resident of the Bay Area (with stops in Dallas, Boston, and Tokyo along the way) and software consultant. Happily married for decades, he enjoys singing and playing mandolin with his church music group.

Ivan Menchell (Playwright) has Broadway credits including Bonnie & Clyde (book), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (additional material), and The Cemetery Club. For the screen, Mr. Menchell wrote an adaptation of his play starring Ellen Burstyn, Diane Ladd, and Olympia Dukakis.

Migi Oey (Set Construction, Scenic Painting) has been part of Tabard’s technical team since Bandstand Beat in 2011. She designed the set for the award-winning Trying. Her knowledge of the performing arts stems from photographing musicians to working with local theatres, schools, and corporate events. She is skilled at drawing, painting large-scaled murals and faux finishes, photography, floral design, textiles, and graphics.

Melissa Sanchez (Costume Designer) received her B.A. in technical theater/costume design from San Francisco State. Productions there included Chess, A Streetcar Named Desire, Barber of Seville, Spring Awakening, and Tartuffe. Other work includes References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot, Wallflower, and La Llorona. She recently costumed West Side Story and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for City Lights. She is Tabard’s resident assistant costumer and costumed Memphis, Crowns, Swift Justice, and Miracle on 34th Street and assisted with costumes for Death Takes a Holiday and I Do, I Do!

Jeff Swan (Lighting Designer), in addition to being a busy lighting designer, is also an actor and playwright. Tabard audiences may remember Jeff from his roles in Antigone in the Oval Office and Swift Justice, as well as for having written Walk On for 10 in 10: 2017. Additionally, he designed the lighting for Tabard’s productions of 1776 and Tuesdays With Morrie. Enjoy… and many thanks to Beth, love of his life.

Jenafer Thompson (Stage Manager, Board Operator) is blessed and excited to stage-manage at Tabard, after serving as assistant stage manager for last season’s Swift Justice. With a B.A. in theatre arts from San Jose State, Jenafer is in her second year teaching in Tabard’s education program at Empire Gardens School, where she directed Alice in Wonderland. For Tabard’s main stage, she directed The Red Hallway in 10 in 10: 2017. Recent onstage performances include The 1940s Radio Hour and Tabard’s Crowns and 10 in 10: 2017.
