PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
WHAT TO EXPECT
As a new partner, you are the future of your firm. And with the rewards of partnership come a host
of new opportunities, responsibilities, and challenges. How you respond may well determine your
future success.
With you in mind, ALM is pleased to announce its inaugural New Partner Forum. Structured over a
day and a half, the Forum tackles the leadership, management, business development, and client-
service issues that new partners have identified as the critical opportunities and challenges that will
shape your law firm future. The Forum also provides ample opportunity to connect and brainstorm
with your peers, helping you build or expand your referral network.
If you’re a new partner who aspires to fast-forward your development as a top practitioner, leader,
and client relationship–builder, then this Forum is for you.
Expect a different experience than you get at traditional conferences. Expect participation, not
lecture. Expect tangible benefits, not platitudes. Expect to walk away with a personal business plan
that can guide your career for several years to come.
Expect a challenging program designed to help you develop the very attributes and behaviors that
you and other new partners associate with the most successful practitioners.
Expect to meet and interact with other lawyers who have flourished in their transitions to partner-
ship; with prominent GCs who hire and collaborate with law firm partners; and with experts from
Harvard Business School, law firms, and consultancies who have coached countless lawyers on the
path to rewarding careers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Over a day and a half, you and your fellow members of this inaugural Forum will hear from and
engage with a distinguished faculty on a diverse set of topics key to a new partner’s success,
including:
Thinking About Your FutureA forum determined to exceed its participants’ expectations
demands a keynote address by someone who has set a high
bar, both as a practicing lawyer and as a law firm leader. Pre-
siding over a firm that has grown from a regional to a global
powerhouse, Peter Kalis, Chair of K&L Gates, will launch the
New Partner Forum with his unique perspective on “The Legal
Business Landscape and What You Can Expect to Face as
the Law Firm Leaders of Tomorrow.”
There’s Comfort in Community: The 2011 ALM Survey of New PartnersYou are not alone in questioning how to build the career to
which you have aspired throughout your associate years. Aric
Press, Vice President and Editor in Chief of ALM, will share
the results of a survey of the attitudes, perspectives, and con-
cerns of the 6,000 new partners promoted in Am Law 100 and
Second Hundred firms over the last three years.
Setting Career Goals and Building a PlanLed by partners who have achieved demonstrable success all
the way from five years out to 20, you will work in teams to
develop your own career goals.
Overcoming the Obstacles We Create for Ourselves Over lunch, Thomas J. DeLong, Phillip J. Stromberg Profes-
sor of Management Practice at Harvard Business School,
will lead forum attendees in a lively and interactive discussion
about “ Surviving Change, Overcoming Fear, and Estab-lishing a Meaningful Career.”
Developing Client RelationshipsLeading chief legal officers (and former law firm partners) dis-
cuss what they expect from new partners, how they managed
their own transitions, and what they see down the road for the
profession. Following that discussion, you will join your peers
in an interactive case study exercise designed to enhance your
ability to attract, build, and expand client relationships.
Building Your Own Brand: Planning Makes PerfectThere’s no substitute for doing good work and delivering
impeccable client service. But leveraging your firm’s brand
equity as you develop your own reputation is a sure-fire way to
get noticed by both clients and prospects. After a discussion
with new partners about how they are making their marks, we
will divide into smaller working groups and develop individual
plans for achieving greater visibility and earning credibility with
your target audiences.
Achieving Peak PerformanceHigh achievers in law firms generally have career aspirations
that require them to develop new skills. Learn how to access
the resources you need to convert your aspirations into reality.
The End Is Just the BeginningBefore you head out at the end of the second day’s program,
you will dine with Australian lawyer-turned-educator Anthony
Kearns. Kearns’s humorous and engaging take on “Excellence:
Who Will Achieve it, Who Won’t and What to do with
Those Who Don’t ” will be just the high note on which to take
what you have learned from the Forum’s experiential learning
approach back to your firm.
WHO SHOULD ATTENDNew law firm partners elected within the last three years who aspire to fast-forward their development as practitioners,
leaders, marketers, and client relationship–builders. The Forum has been designed by and for lawyers who are driven to
excel in all aspects of their professional lives.
