Welcome

Presents

The Tabard TheaTre company

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Artistic Director

It seems like we just started our 16th season themed “Courage” with Memphis, and here we are now with the final production, the very fun musical spoof The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!).

If ever there was a show for everyone, this one’s it. If you love musicals, you will delight in the clever send-up of characters, scenes, and songs from classic Broadway musicals. You’ll enjoy recognizing the moments and memories they spark. If you hate musicals, you’re really going to like this production because it’s highlighting all the things that make you crazy about the genre. The show is pure fun!

Musical theatre is arguably a very American art form that continues to change its shape and sound as it reflects the world in which we live. In order for that to continue, it is imperative that our young people have exposure to the arts as well as access to training. Before Tabard ever produced a production, we offered affordably priced youth arts education workshops. In keeping with that legacy, the designated non-profit for this production is Tabard’s arts education program that includes scholarships so that any child who would like access to arts training may participate.

This summer for youth we are offering three summer arts camps as well as the youth/mentor musical A Year with Frog and Toad KIDS!

For adults, in June we kick off our Top of the Stairs productions, two thoughtfully provocative plays about two American artists: Red about Mark Rothko, and O’Keeffe: Paintings from the Faraway Nearby about Georgia O’Keeffe. More info on these and our youth program is in our 17th season brochure and on our website. We have some fabulously wonderful shows lined up for 2017-2018, themed “Choices.” If you haven’t already subscribed, Early Bird pricing is available until May 5th! Choose to be a part of it!

From Nick Nichols, Executive Director

As you have undoubtedly heard, the federal government is proposing the elimination of all funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in nfiscal year 2018. Like most non-profit arts organizations, Tabard relies on

funding from sources like the NEA to stay in business, provide theatre art for our community and continue to be, as it says in our mission, “…an inclusive environment where the community can participate in every aspect of the plays, musicals, educational programs, and music concerts we produce.” The elimination of the NEA would have dire consequences for arts groups in cities across the United States, including San Jose. Please let your representatives know that you value accessible arts and cultural programs for a diverse San Jose citizenry and urge them to save the NEA. Thank you for your support. Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Adrien Gleason is thrilled to be returning to Tabard after appearing in Violet (Monty) and Starting Here, Starting Now. Other favorite Bay Area roles include Collins in Rent, John in Miss Saigon, Enjolras in Les Mis, Juan Peron in Evita, and Fredrick in Pirates of Penzance. By day Adrien teaches music in Fremont Unified School District. He would like to thank Samuel and Doug for their belief in him, Jennifer for her patience and amazing teaching style, his extraordinarily talented castmates for inspiring him to always strive for better, and KAT for holding down the fort during rehearsals. What beautiful corn!

Glenna Murillo is happy to be returning to Tabard after her debut in Starting Here Starting Now. Other local theater credits include Almost Maine with Tall Girl Productions, Donna/Oolie in City of Angels and Marie in Fiorello! with South Bay Musical Theater, Princess Puffer in The Mystery of Edwin Drood at Sunnyvale Players, Velma Kelly in Chicago at City Lights Theater Company, and Sally Slate/Mrs. Phagan in Parade with Palo Alto Players. Glenna’s most important role, though, is as mother to her beautiful daughter Ami, who inspires her mamma to be the best she can be every day.

Alicia Teeter was most recently seen as Marian in The Music Man at Lyric Theatre. Other favorites include Charlotte in A Little Night Music and Roxie in Chicago at Hillbarn Theatre; Georgia in Curtains, Olive in Spelling Bee, Catherine in Pippin, and Hope in Urinetown at Foothill Music Theatre; Lucille in Parade at Palo Alto Players; and Jo in Little Women and Maria in The Sound of Music for the Woodland Opera Company. Alicia has also performed as a soloist for the Las Vegas Master Singers and the Las Vegas Philharmonic.

Gregg Zigler makes his second Tabard appearance, after last season’s Miracle on 34th Street. Gregg has shared the stage with fellow Musical of Musicals (The Musical!) cast and staff in Curtains, Spelling Bee, Pippin, and Urinetown, all at Foothill Music Theatre. Other productions include Promises, Promises and The Pajama Game (South Bay Musical Theatre); George M! (WVLO Musical Theatre); and The Goodbye Girl (Los Altos Stage). He also sings in the 12-man a cappella choir Keynote Vocal Group. Gregg is grateful that MMM gives him five opportunities to be the “bad guy.”

Joanne Bogart (Lyrics and Book) began her collaboration with Eric Rockwell at the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. Their work on The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!) was honored with a 2004 Drama Desk nomination for Best Musical, as well as individual nominations for Best Music and Best Lyrics. Ms. Bogart and Mr. Rockwell’s parody of Mickey and Judy musicals, Golly Gee Whiz, won the 2009 National Youth Theatre Award for Outstanding New Musical.

Eric Rockwell (Music and Book) is a musician, teacher, dramatist, and award-winning composer whose work has been produced off-Broadway, regionally, and internationally. A 2004 Drama Desk nominee for The Musical of Musicals (the Musical!), he also developed the score to A Little Princess, which was chosen for both the Dramatists Guild New Musicals Project and the New Tuners Festival. As a “serious” composer, Mr. Rockwell made his Carnegie Hall debut with a heartwarming Christmas carol entitled “The Annoying Drummer Boy.”

Doug Baird (Director), a Tabard associate artistic director, previously directed I Do! I Do!; Tuesdays With Morrie; Starting Here, Starting Now; Making God Laugh; Looking Over the President’s Shoulder; and Driving Miss Daisy. Other recent directing credits include Irene; Bells Are Ringing; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; and My Fair Lady at WVLO Musical Theatre. Doug is also an award-winning actor, having appeared in Cabaret; Hello, Dolly!; South Pacific; The Pajama Game; Pippin; and 42nd Street.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer) is a theatre/television veteran and entrepreneur who created/produced/co-hosted the weekly TV program Theater This Week in the 1990s before founding Tabard in 2001. She has created and/or written and directed a handful of productions for Tabard, including the most recent Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey. In her non-theatre time, Cathy teaches yoga for seniors at Joint Venture Churches in Almaden, The Sea Ranch, and periodically in Anchor Bay.

Joe Cassetta (Technical Director) continues to lead Tabard’s technical team, which he has done since the company was founded in 2001. With a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A. from Santa Clara University, Joe’s steady and skilled leadership has led to Tabard’s increased ability to explore and expand what we do technically.

Samuel Cisneros (Music Director, Keyboard) is a highly respected pianist and music director who has worked with most of the theatre companies in the South Bay as well as accompanying STOCtet. He returns to Tabard after serving as music director for the award-winning Violet, as well as for Crowns, I Do! I Do! and Starting Here, Starting Now. He was also assistant music director for Death Takes a Holiday and accompanist for several other Tabard shows.

James Creer (Properties) is familiar to Tabard audiences for his many appearances on the Tabard stage. As Tabard associate producer, he has assisted producing Tabard mainstage shows since October 2015 and produced Tabard’s 2016 summer youth/mentor production Alice in Wonderland. Most recently, he directed The Great Relative, one of the ten-minute plays in 10 in 10: 2017. With a background in music, James leads the gospel choir at Campbell United Methodist Church.

John DiLoreto (Sound Designer) is Tabard’s chief audio engineer and has designed sound for over 30 Tabard shows since 2008. He has also designed sound for TheatreWorks, City Lights, South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Sunnyvale Community Players, and various clubs and bands for over 30 years. He is also a former record producer, recording studio owner, and keyboardist in numerous rock bands and in theatre orchestras. While at M.I.T., he studied acoustics with Professor Bose, and he holds an M.Eng. from U.C. Berkeley and an M.B.A. from Stanford. By day, he is Tabard’s operations director.

Jennifer Gorgulho (Choreographer) is excited for her Tabard debut! She has a B.F.A. in dance from San Jose State. Choreography: Into the Woods, Big Fish, Young Frankenstein, and Miss Saigon for Palo Alto Players; The Little Mermaid and Phantom for Children’s Musical Theater San Jose; West Side Story and Spamalot for City Lights; Irene for WVLO Musical Theatre; and Drood for Archbishop Mitty High School. Performance: Hairspray, Mary Poppins, and White Christmas at Children’s Musical Theater; The Little Mermaid (Andrina) and The Addams Family at Palo Alto; Shrek at Diablo Theater Company; and A Chorus Line (Connie), Hairspray (Lou Ann), and Swing! at Cabrillo Stage.

Charlynn Knighton (Production Manager) most recently directed Tabard’s production of A Dickens of a Christmas Mashup and one of the plays in 10 in 10: 2017. With a B.S. in music and theatre, Charlynn has worked across the U.S. and the Bay Area with Millbrook Playhouse, TheatreWorks, Broadway San Jose, San Jose Rep, West Valley Light Opera, and Portola Valley Theatre Conservatory in a variety of technical and creative positions. A Tabard associate artistic director and production manager, she thanks her family for their constant love and support along this journey!

Robert Lewis (Board Operator) returns after stage-managing Death Takes A Holiday and Homeward Bound and working in technical roles for most of the shows in the last two seasons. A New Jersey native and electrical engineer by education, Robert is now a 27-year resident of the Bay Area (with stops in Dallas, Boston, and Tokyo along the way) and software consultant. Happily married for decades, he enjoys singing and playing mandolin with his church music group.

Janet Miller (Assistant to Director) returns to Tabard after directing The Guardians for 10 in 10: 2017. Janet has been active both on stage and off working with Tabard, South Bay Musical Theatre, and Lyric Theatre. Most recently she was assistant stage manager for Tabard’s Edith Stein and assisted with Tabard’s summer youth acting workshop. Janet is District Instructional Coach for Literacy for the San Jose Unified School District. Janet’s next onstage appearance will be in South Bay Musical Theatre’s Chess: In Concert.

Nick Nichols (Lighting Designer) is Tabard’s executive director and also the resident lighting consultant for Tabard and Theatre on San Pedro Square, designing lighting for many of Tabard’s productions since he joined Tabard in 2014. Before moving into arts management, Nick spent 20 years working as a lighting designer and/or technical director for Villanova Summer Shakespeare, Princess Cruise Lines, Ballet San Jose, and American Musical Theatre of San Jose. Nick holds an M.F.A. in technical direction/lighting design from Temple University and has taught lighting and technical theatre at Santa Clara University, San Jose State, and U.C. Santa Cruz.

Joan Rubin (Stage Manager) is managing her seventh show for Tabard, following Edith Stein; I Do! I Do!; Tuesdays with Morrie; Starting Here, Starting Now; Making God Laugh; and Looking Over the President’s Shoulder. She has stage-

managed a dozen shows for Woodside Players and Woodside Community Theatre, as well many for Saratoga Drama Group / South Bay Musical Theatre. She notes that this has been a hilarious and pleasurable experience working with these actors and staff of Tabard. Next up for her is stage-managing Mom’s Gift at Tabard next season.

Melissa Sanchez (Costume Designer) received her B.A. in technical theater/costume design from San Francisco State. Productions there included Chess, A Streetcar Named Desire, Barber of Seville, Spring Awakening, and Tartuffe. Other work includes References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot, Wallflower, and La Llorona. She recently costumed West Side Story and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for City Lights. She is Tabard’s resident assistant costumer and costumed The Cemetery Club, Memphis, Crowns, Swift Justice, and Miracle on 34th Street and assisted with costumes for Death Takes a Holiday and I Do, I Do!

Rover Spotts (Set Construction) has previously designed lighting for a number of Tabard shows. He also works for the City of Sunnyvale’s theater and has designed shows for Sunnyvale Community Players, Lyric Theatre, 42nd Street Moon, Theatre Rhinoceros, and various other Bay Area theater companies.

Marilyn Watts (Costume Designer) has been Tabard’s resident costume designer since the company’s second season and designed the costumes for the award-winning Trying. Marilyn is also Tabard’s audience services director and is costumer for several theatre/dance companies. What brings an even bigger smile to her is anything related to I Love Lucy.
