Mental Health: Challenges and Possibilites
10-11 OctoberVilnius, BEST WESTERN Vilnius Hotel
Konstitucijos avenue 14
Co-funded bythe Health Programmeof the European Union
The habit of simplifying health problems to pill and scalpel is still very much alive. But a human being is far too complex to be reduced to that. Under no circumstances mental health should lose our focus. We need to understand that mental well-being of every person is essential to the public welfare.
Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis,Minister of Health (Lithuania)
The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania together with the Lithuanian State Mental Health Center is organizing an EU-Presidency conference „Mental Health: Challenges and Possibilites“ on 10-11 October in Vil-nius. The conference will explore a range of important mental health issues, which were inspired by the European Pact for Mental Health and Well-being and the Conclusions of the Council of the European Union “The European Pact for Mental Health and Well-being: results and future action” from 2011. The event is receiving co-funding from the EU-Health Programme.
About 200 participants are expected to attend the conference including delegates from the Member States and from countries belonging to the European Free Trade Association and the European Union Eastern Partner-ship. Participants from international and national governmental and non-governmental organisations, represen-tatives of national and European agencies that have a vested interest in mental health are also invited.
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Mental disorders are on the rise in the EU. Today, almost 50 million citizens (about 11% of the population) are estimated to experience mental disorders, with women and men developing and exhibiting different symptoms. Depression is already the most prevalent health problem in many EU-Member States. Suicide remains a major cause of death. Mental disorders and suicide cause immense suffering for individuals, families and communities, and mental disorders are major causes of disability. They put pressure on health, educational, economic, labour market and social welfare systems across the EU. Complementary action and a combined effort at EU level can help Member States tackle these challenges by promoting good mental health and well-being in the population, strengthening preventive action and self-help, and providing support to people who experience mental health problems and their families.
There is a great need to break the taboo surrounding mental illness, and to empower people with mental health disorders. This requires a strong commitment to addressing stigma and discrimination.
The inclusion of mental health policies as part of other policies is crucial as it leads to a society that is men-tally healthy and relates closely to healthy ageing. Topics of the implementation of the principle of “Mental health in all policies”, mental health of children, youth, working age and elderly people will be tackled. Alcohol abuse and its effects, suicide risk and depression management, stigmatisation and the application of human rights are among the important problems that will be raised. The topics chosen also reflect some of the priorities of the Lithuanian Presidency in the field of health.
10 October is World Mental Health day and this year topic is „Mental Health and Older Adults“. This impor-tant issue will be also discussed during the conference.
