The CSI Foundation, the College, and southern Idaho have had another banner year of growth, education, and employment. The college is woven into the very fabric of the communities it serves. Degrees and course offerings are continually updated and evolving to keep pace with new technologies and employment possibilities. The Foundation allows thousands of students to access the education they hope for. The Foundation gave out over $2.3 million in scholarships to over 1,500 CSI students in the 2018/19 fiscal year. With your support, we’d love to give more. Our theme for this eventful year, “Moments in Time: Past, Present and the Future at CSI”, is especially timely.
The past is a story of amazing success. A little community college foundation in southern Idaho has prospered through careful stewardship of donations and the development of great relationships with wonderful donors. Steadily navigating through the past, our beloved Foundation Director, Deb Wilson, is preparing to retire. This in and of itself is a huge change for the Foundation. She has been a steady guiding force for so long. We wish her the very best retirement filled with joyous free time.
Presently, Deb and the rest of the Foundation staff, continue to be key to the Foundation. They are up for the challenge. With over $42 million in professionally managed assets, we are giving many impactful scholarships to students. Lots of evolution is happening right now. New software systems, policy updates, events, and approaches to donors all bode well for the future of students and our communities.
The future looks to be more: more donors, more programs, more opportunities. An exciting addition to the mix is a women specific program called the CSI Foundation HOPE Giving Circle. Using an interactive model, there will be annual receptions and events for female scholars and donors. Join us as we march into the future of education and continue the joy of giving.
You can be proud of the past, present and future of the Foundation and its service to students from every background. Thank you all for your generosity and faith in this College, the Foundation, and the students we serve. A former scholarship student myself, I can honestly say scholarships change lives. I am confident this Foundation will continue to do just that.
Warmest Regards,
Lori H. Ward, CSI Foundation President
President’s Message
Lori H. WardCSI Foundation President
The past and the present are evident. We know the facts and data about what the CSI Foundation has done and how many students have been impacted by the generous support of donors. We can look today at similar results, trends, and short-term plans. You’ll find most of this information throughout the Annual Report. The future, though, is another story since the world is not static or even predictably dynamic. When I think of CSI students, I think of transformation, of lives being changed for the better through education and the opportunity to access education. By its nature, education is a future-oriented process. Studies in fields ranging from nursing to English are about learning skills and abilities for tomorrow. Education is about
critical thought and ability, a combination of skills and reason. Education is about the tax payers and citizens of our future.
Regardless of the job title, every job requires some skill in certain areas, and competency in communications, both verbal and written, as well as applied mathematics at a minimum, are essential. That’s not new. All our best jobs have always required broad skills. Looking to tomorrow though, and with these foundational pieces in place, jobs of the future require more.
Executives attending the World Economic Forum were asked what the most important job skills would be in 20201. Their responses, in order of importance, were complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, people management, collaboration with others, emotional intelligence, judgement and decision making, service orientation, negotiation, and cognitive flexibility. These are skills that transcend learning how to weld or to calculate dosage or to figure the volume of gasses or to analyze a text. These are skills that come from learning about oneself in community. These are about connecting with people. These are qualities that each of us must develop as we move through this journey of life and work, of relationships, and belonging to a community that is a part of a civil and educated society.
In this respect and as a necessary part of our students’ futures, education is among the most personal and impactful of life events. The CSI Foundation, through its amazing donors, supports our students and looks to this future. Your generosity is about the future for all of us. Thank you for this sure investment in education through the CSI Foundation.
Best Regards,
Jeff Fox, CSI President

steFFany niCole leavittDon and Kathryn Ramseyer Scholarship
I have been given another chance to go back to school after being a wife and mother of two little children. I was so honored to be awarded the Don and Kathryn Ramseyer Scholarship to help me in my venture back to school. It’s not always easy balancing finances to make everything work out, but with this gracious opportunity, it helped alleviate some of my worries. I will forever be thankful for this generous scholarship. I’m working towards completing my elementary education degree and it gives me great hope, knowing that there are others out there willing to invest their support in me. It gives me the confidence to work hard and do well in my educational journey.
Before Don and Kathy Ramseyer got married they became acquainted through the Magic Valley Cerebral Palsy Council. This was a group that banded together to help children with Cerebral Palsy have a better life including providing funds for special education. Both of them lost their spouses in 1968 and 1969 but they found their way to each other and together continued the work on the council until it disbanded when a special education school was built in Twin Falls. The Ramseyers facilitated the leftover funds when the council ended being sent to the CSI Foundation to support students looking to work in the field of special education. In 2002 the Ramseyers donated a personal gift of stock to be used for general scholarships at CSI. They continued to generously support students during their life. Unfortunately, Don and Kathy passed away in 2008 and 2009 respectively. Although their lives ended, their work helping others improve through higher education will live forever. Over $189,000 has been distributed to help students with their tuition expenses because Don and Kathy knew an investment in education is an investment for the whole community.

dr. Cal Butler MeMorial sCholarshiP Fund
Dr. Cal Butler met his wife Marilyn at Colorado State University. They married in 1959 and continued to live and work in Colorado. In 1971, Cal and Marilyn moved west and settled with their daughters on a family farm in Buhl. While learning how to farm from neighbors, Cal taught at CSI eventually serving as the chair of the math department. Cal’s advanced math students really liked him and it was not unusual for them to return to CSI and thank him for what he taught them. Marilyn also taught algebra and math for non-science students at CSI starting in 1988. They both decided to make every day a Saturday and retired together in 2000. Retirement
meant grand adventures for Cal and Marilyn as they traveled with ATV’s, their pick-up camper and the Cessna 180 Cal flew. They also spent time exploring places overseas including England, Russia, Germany, France, Costa Rica, Spain, Australia, Mexico and both Central America and South America. After 58 years of adventures, Cal sadly passed away in 2018. Although Cal’s globe-trotting adventures came to end, the memory of his love for CSI students will never end. This fund is one of our newest funds at CSI and we look forward to awarding students in the 20-21 academic year. This way we can ensure Cal’s legacy of challenging students academically and teaching them to think critically will live forever. We are very grateful to the whole Butler family for choosing to honor Cal this way.

The College of Southern Idaho has always been proud of a rich academic tradition that meets the needs of students from all walks of life. One of the strengths of this tradition has always been the ability to change, adapt, and grow to meet the needs of our students and community. When Dr. Cindy Bond started as an Instructor at the College of Southern Idaho in 1980, most of CSI’s students came on to the Twin Falls campus to study in fields from Accounting to Theatre. When Dr. Bond retired from her position as Instructional Dean in 2019, CSI was the college of choice to students from all over the world. Many of these students take their classes online
or at local high schools through our extensive dual credit programs and study in fields from Precision Agriculture to Wind Energy Systems. Many of these students earn degrees at CSI without ever setting foot on our campus. This broadening of the student base has also brought with it a need to look outward to our sister institutions and pay close attention to transfer and course equivalency throughout the state of Idaho. For years, the College of Southern Idaho has offered complete programs here in Twin Falls but could do so without much of the outside influence that is felt today. In 2019, CSI continues to adapt curriculum and course needs not only to our own population, but with an eye to how those adaptations will make it seamless for our students to move from institution to institution throughout the state of Idaho. One of our many strengths is this ability to always evolve to serve our communities and constituencies. We look forward to that for decades to come!

For 20 years the CSI Foundation held an annual dinner and auction we called the Black & Gold Ball. After communication with donors and board members, it was decided to move away from large dinner events and look to holding smaller, donor focused events to better help connect donors directly to students. The Foundation spent the past year planning the events that will meet that request.
The CSI Foundation HOPE Giving Circle was launched in the past few months. A giving circle is when a group of people come together to pool their resources for a specified purpose. The HOPE Circle will bring community women together to raise scholarship funding for female students at CSI. Any woman can join the circle with a qualifying contribution. Circle membership will connect women at all stages of life. Circle members will not only have the
opportunity to provide scholarships for the next generation of educated women, but will also have the opportunity to mentor students, and connect with like-minded women in the community, personally and professionally. If you are interested in joining the CSI Foundation HOPE Giving Circle please return the enclosed envelope with the appropriate box checked.
The CSI Foundation is planning a Scholarship Donor Reception in April 2020. Donors will get the chance to have lunch or dinner with students who received funds in the 19-20 academic year. We have had increasing requests from both donors and recipients to arrange a gathering where they could meet and learn more about each other. This event will be completely hosted and anyone who has started an endowment or whose funds have been awarded may receive an invitation. If you’d like to be included in that event please check the appropriate box on the enclosed envelope and we will reach out to you. Please note the final guest list will be dependent on awarding status and whether or not the student is able to attend.
For information on these and other Foundation events feel free to contact our office, or check us out online: www.csi.edu/foundation.

CSI’s mission has always included workforce training to drive economic prosperity in the community. Prior to the formalization of the Workforce Development & Training division, economic development projects were assigned to various leaders on campus. In 2014, Workforce Development & Training was formally created, and with each year, the department’s capacity to serve the community continues to expand. Workforce Development & Training not only services economic development projects but also offers career trainings and education programs that build pathways to post-secondary education or success in the workforce.
The mission of Workforce Development & Training is to help everyone in our community thrive. With the region’s increasing diversity, this department continues to be responsive to the changing needs of companies and individuals. We partner with companies to upskill their current employees, onboard new employees, and help teams work more effectively.
We also actively engage with the community to understand workforce needs so that we can help individuals secure a job, advance in their career or change careers completely. Through trainings offered by this department, individuals are exposed to career paths, certifications, and opportunities in a way that’s accessible for where they are in their lives through in-person, online, hybrid, evening classes, and apprenticeships. The career that once seemed unreachable is now in their grasp, and this department has the honor of being the stepping stone that opened the door and made it accessible.
Workforce Development & Training now serves over 10,000 students a year; a 200% increase from 5 years ago. Our network of professionals consists of over 100 instructors including CSI employees, local experts and in some cases, outside talent. This is possible thanks to the engagement and support of the communities we serve. We appreciate those who partner with us by lending their expertise as instructors, hiring the individuals who take part in our training programs, and supporting our free events as sponsors. Without our community partners and donors, we would not be able to ensure that everyone in our community has the opportunity to thrive.

CSI recently launched Weekend College Plus. Designed for working adults and students with family responsibilities, Weekend College Plus provides convenience and value to non-traditional students. Students can earn an associate degree or certificate one weekend at a time! Courses are available through multiple delivery modes (face-to-face, online, and hybrid) and offered in the evenings on Fridays and Saturdays. Free tutoring is available in the evenings (including Friday) and Sunday. Summer semester math preparation courses, established certificate and degree plans, and course sequence keep students on target to complete their program in two years or less. Weekend College Plus currently offers degrees in Liberal Arts (AA), General Business (AA), and Education (AA) as well as certificates in Accounting/Bookkeeping (AAS) and Welding (BTC, ITC, and AAS). In addition to these, Geospatial Technology (BTC) is offered at the CSI Jerome Center.
Many students report they appreciate the opportunity to earn a degree or certificate in the evenings and weekends while still being able to work during the week, allowing them to live a more balanced life. Childcare scholarship opportunities are made available to students that need childcare, providing the opportunity for parenting students to finish their credentials.
For more information, please contact Kendal Nield at [email protected] or 208-732-6876
At the request of the CSI Foundation Board, this past year, the Foundation staff undertook a project to create the Southern Idaho Nonprofit Directory. We asked nonprofits independent from religious or political organizations, to give us information on who they are, what they do and why they do it. Over 100 organizations participated by returning the card we sent them or using the online form. We built the directory using that information, printed it and distributed it to accounting, legal and financial professionals. If there are folks working with those professionals who are philanthropically inclined but not sure what options existed, they can now browse the directory. It was delightful to learn more about these nonprofit organizations in Southern Idaho and create a vehicle to communicate the great work happening in our communities. We hope it is a useful resource for both nonprofits and estate planning professionals.

My journey through education has not been typical. I have worked hard to be able to take classes and I’ve had to overcome so many barriers. One of those barriers was coming to America from Afghanistan just so I could get an education. Another barrier was learning the language. Then there was the challenge in being able to pay for college classes. Fortunately, the cost was offset because I was the recipient of the Brad Craig Scholarship Fund. Attending classes has helped me grow as a human as well as increase my ability to do better in life. CSI classes have taught how to be a learner which has helped me complete my courses each semester. So far I have competed the first step in realizing my dream of becoming a surgeon. Once I complete my education I will take what I have learned and go into the world and help people. I would like to thank the Craig’s for creating this scholarship fund to help students achieve their goals. It really does make a difference.
Brad Craig MeMorial sCholarshiP Fund
In 1984 the College of Southern Idaho had been around for 19 years. A group of community members recognized the need to have a way to raise scholarship money for students and this resulted in the CSI Foundation being created. One of the first funds to be established in the brand new Foundation was the Brad Craig Memorial Scholarship Fund. Brad was the son of CSI Chairman of Board of Trustees for 37 years, LeRoy and his wife Joyce Craig. Brad was a CSI Alumni and he is remembered as someone who never met a stranger. He was a runner, skier, and photographer and had boundless energy. He touched many lives in his 18 years. LeRoy and Joyce chose to honor Brad’s memory by starting this fund. This particular fund is extremely helpful because it targets very special students. These students may have a past that, for various reasons, makes them not qualified for regular scholarships. But they possess unique personal characteristics and potential as individuals in the present and we are certain they will make significant contributions to society in the future. In the 35 years since this fund was started $92,768 has been awarded showing that even though Brad can’t be here to express love and encouragement to students, his memory can. Thank you LeRoy and Joyce for leaving a legacy for CSI Students.

Loving our students and helping them learn and succeed is about far more than the content that we teach in the classroom. If they don’t have basic resources and support, asking them to focus on the hard work of being a college student becomes impossible. The CSI Foundation supports our students and the work of CSI faculty in so many important ways. I’m proud to make donations every month to several CSI Foundation funds. In so many cases, just a little bit of help means the difference between success and failure.
One of my professors in graduate school used to say “The feeding of students is one of life’s great honors.” He was right. Gilbert’s Pantry is a new and vital support mechanism for our students. You can’t learn with an empty stomach or if you’re worried about where your kids’ next meal is coming from. The campus food pantry carries
non-perishable food, toiletries, household items like laundry detergent, and school supplies. Donating money in addition to the items that they ask for allows them to buy what they need and to give students the opportunity to buy things on their own.
The CSI STEM Scholarship provides financial support and recruiting incentives to local students interested in science. As a member of the CSI STEM faculty, these are my students and I donate to give them a bit more encouragement and reward them for their hard work. Being a full time student while also holding a full time job, as many of our students do, is a very demanding balance. Anything that we can do to give our students the freedom to focus on their classes helps them to be more successful. This is a place where a few hundred dollars can make an incredible impact on the future of one of our students. Last spring’s “signing ceremony” to welcome the high school students who earned this scholarship was a lot of fun!
With my donation to the Greatest Needs Fund, I trust the Foundation to help students who have unexpected obstacles to their success in school. I’ve seen this fund help students come to class by helping with a car repair or gas money, broken glasses, and other things that would otherwise prevent them from coming to class. A little generosity can really change someone’s life and give them hope.
My classes have benefitted greatly from the generosity of the CSI Foundation donors. I’ve had a mini-grant funded that allowed the purchase of lab equipment that gives my Organic Chemistry 2 students hands-on experience with important lab techniques. This knowledge and experience helps them to stand out from their peers as they apply for jobs in research laboratories when they move on from CSI to their transfer institutions.
The CSI Foundation is one of the very best things about being associated with the College of Southern Idaho. They are the purest expression of our mission to educate and uplift our community. Their work makes me very proud to contribute.

William and Alice Grange, better known as Bill and Penny, came to Twin Falls in 1953 as Bill was an appliance area representative climbing the corporate ladder at General Electric. Penny reported that at the time of the transfer they didn’t even know where Twin Falls was. However, a few short years after arriving, Bill quit his job with General Electric because the corporation wanted to transfer him away and he and Penny didn’t want to go. Eventually, Bill was hired to manage the Chamber of Commerce office downtown. It was a time of economic struggles for the Granges and the city but despite that, Dr. James Taylor caught their ears with his ambitious plan to create a junior college. Bill said before they knew it they were raising $500,000 for a Fine Arts Center. For the next decade Bill and Penny watched the community and its college grow until another job took them to Boise in 1969. Even though they moved away, the students at CSI never left their hearts and minds. In 1987, just a few years after the CSI Foundation was formed, they gave an extraordinarily generous gift in the form of a Charitable Remainder Unitrust, also called a CRUT. That gift actually became a source of humor for Bill as it was discovered in 2016 that he had outlived it. He responded with
telling people the secret to a long, happy life was creating a CRUT with the Foundation! By all accounts a happy life is what Bill and Penny shared until she passed away in 2005. Bill later passed away in 2018 and for his final gift to the Foundation, he established an endowment from his estate called The William Grange Scholarship fund to provide support for students in the Career-Technical/Workforce Development programs. Bill and Penny were wonderful people and wonderful friends to the Foundation. We are incredibly grateful that they chose to support the Foundation in the past, present and future. If you would like more information on giving like Bill and Penny have done please do not hesitate to contact our office.

John and Betty almost met at a Hollister High School dance. He had caught her eye and as he was the brother of one of her friends, it was arranged for them to meet. However, John had a twin brother and that’s who was actually brought over for the introduction. That evening, she rode home with John, his date, his twin brother and her friend. Something must have sparked for John because the very next Sunday he came to call on Betty. That began their 56 years together. After their December wedding, John and Betty settled in the Salmon Tract. They farmed together and had a very happy life until John, sadly, passed away in 1995. Betty had a deep love for John and she also loves her participation in agriculture. This led to her wanting to start an endowment in 2012 to honor John’s legacy and to help her be connected to agriculture through the CSI students. In just 7 years, the fund has distributed $19,391 in scholarships. We are truly appreciative of Betty and all she is doing to help our students have a better future for themselves.
John and Betty Rae Pastoor Scholarship
A college-level education has never been more integral to people making an impact in the world of agriculture than it is today. And thanks to the special generosity of the John and Betty Rae Pastoor Scholarship, I am pursuing a career that will make just such an impact. My name is Jonathon Ehlers and I am continuing to work on my Agri-Business – AA degree at the College of Southern Idaho. This scholarship has been such a tremendous help to my studies. College is not getting any cheaper, but the Pastoor’s Scholarship took this great load off my shoulders so I could focus on my studies more intently. I could not be more thankful for this generosity that sent me forward in life and I hope that I can live my life and use my career in ways that help others on the same road I found myself on.

In April 2018, the State Board of Education approved the College of Southern Idaho to offer a unique teacher preparation program, designed specifically to make a contribution to the exceptional teacher shortages plaguing the schools in our community. In the state’s 2018 Teacher Pipeline Report, it was reported that Region 4 has the highest percentage of teachers working without full certification; specifically, at least one out of every ten teachers is practicing without full certification. This is a fact that could have a long-term, negative impact on our region. Multiple studies have shown that teacher quality is the most critical factor in a child’s education, and while an ineffective teacher can put students at an academic disadvantage and affect their progress for years, a student with a highly effective teacher can have positive long-term academic gains. Our educator preparation program is striving to address this issue - key to the future economic health of Region 4 - by providing a highly innovative, practical approach to supporting and preparing the many teachers in our community who are teaching while working toward full certification.
CSI’s educator preparation program is unique in a number of ways: Unlike traditional preparation programs, we strive to individualize each learning plan, accounting for the strengths each teacher-candidate brings. We utilize nationally recognized best practices throughout our instructional modules and performance assessments that are aligned with State Standards and the Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching Clusters (the current foundation of Idaho’s teacher evaluation process). These modules can be accessed at almost any time, and from anywhere in the state. Most important, however, is our preparation program’s emphasis on hands-on training and individualized, consistent support for our candidates provided by a highly skilled mentor.
The goal of CSI’s educator preparation program is to address Idaho’s current teacher shortage by ensuring more flexible and robust training options to support emergency hires throughout Idaho school districts, but also expanding our program to fulfill our vision of partnering with districts to proactively create and fill local teacher pipelines. Our aim is to work with district leaders to identify career-changers within their communities, and paraprofessionals that we can guide toward the attainment of a bachelor’s degree as necessary. Our program will bring them all together in a residency-type program, allowing them to become fully certified and focused on continuous professional learning prior to taking on the responsibilities of a full-time teacher. If you are interested in supporting our program, sponsoring a teacher candidate, or becoming a teacher yourself, please contact Katie Rhodenbaugh at 208-732-6396 or [email protected] for program information, and Tamara Harmon from the CSI Foundation at (208)732-6249 for information on how you can financially support this important work.

Paul E. Newton Scholarship
Out of all the goals I have set for my life, completing college has been the biggest and most daunting. After graduating high school, I realized just how difficult it would be - books and tuition being the largest expense of them all. I have always been laser focused on my future career as a Registered Dental Hygienist, so I was willing and ready to endure the financial burden. With donations from generous donors, such as the Paul E. Newton Scholarship, I have been able to solely focus my efforts on becoming the best student and clinician that I can be. This scholarship has helped to alleviate the current stresses of the miscellaneous expenses that go along with hygiene school. As I enter my senior year, I am excited for what the future holds and am already planning ways that I can give back to my community once I graduate. I am sincerely so grateful for the assistance and support throughout my education.
Paul Newton’s first introduction to the college was when he came in to conduct some of the original engineering on campus as it was being built over 50 years ago. He and his wife Nancy were also one of the early donors to the Fine Arts Auditorium project. Paul was born in Iowa but when a job brought him to Southern Idaho he jumped into the community with both feet. He was heavily involved with economic projects, he worked as the city engineer and even served on the Twin Falls City Council in the early 80’s. Paul and Nancy also raised four boys right here in Twin Falls. When Paul passed away in 1992 his family wanted to ensure that Paul’s name would forever be attached to the college, honoring his legacy of contributing to CSI’s future. This endowment has awarded $13,019 to CSI students since inception. It will continue to help students indefinitely and as the fund grows the awards will also grow ensuring future generations will know about Paul and his family.
