President Report

Despite all the restrictions from the gallery, the CAS annual

opening night went very well, as did the dinner.

I would like to thank all the members that supported and

helped at the gallery, and many thanks for making the eve-

ning a great success. From what I heard the Mayor was very

impressed with the Cairns Art Society.

This is a statement from Richard Klekociuk...........

“As with all art societies, there is a broad mix of skill and

‘thinking’ on display. It’s great to see both amateurs and

professionals being given the opportunity to exhibit together

in such an inspiring gallery. It is also very pleasing to see

such a gallery acknowledge its local artists. This type of

support is not only valued, but is essential to the welfare of

art and artists in regional Australia.”

The Reef Casino Award for Open Award, a $2500 acquisitive prize, goes to

- Andrew Linklater………Gallery Body Language No 4 I love the structure of Andrew’s painting. The relationships between us (viewing the painting) and the

people depicted in the painting. The dominant male figure beckons you to come and join the group.

The placing of the group’s feet in various directions adds an interesting dimension. Abstract shapes have

also been used rather cleverly.

The Highly Commended certificate for Open Award goes to

- Yoshiko Kirby……Quiet Time With Cat

The Ron and Marion Ireland Award for best Seascape or Landscape, a $2000 non-acquisitive prize, goes to

- Lou Derry ……..Dusk over the Headland Kewarra A sensitive, sensual relationship between land, sea and sky make for a pastel painting of the highest calibre.

There is an acute awareness of the subtlety of ‘evening’ light. The foreground takes on the look of a sky in

sand.

The Highly Commended certificate for Seascape or Landscape goes to

- Delia Gilligan…….Twilight Cairns Esplanade

The Cairns Regional Council Award for Best Sculpture/ 3D Artwork, a $1500 non-acquisitive prize, goes to

- Jennie Scott ……..Disposable Animals in War A gut-wrenching commentary on the fate of animals in war. Brilliantly conceived and executed. Wonderfully

expressive, full of emotion. A fragile animal trapped in the products and emotions of war. Stop, look, think…

The Highly Commended certificate for Sculpture goes to

- Elke Nagy……….Apple

The Warren Entsch Award for flora and Fauna, a $1000 non-acquisitive prize, goes to

- Eddie Argall……..Cassowary Licuala A striking painting, expertly composed and one whose patterns both obvious and subtle combine to

illustrate the majesty, power and beauty of this iconic bird. The treatment of the cassowary’s neck is most

impressive.

The Highly Commended certificate for Flora and Fauna goes to

- Dagmar Dawson…….In the Canopy

The Cairns Art Society Award for Best Watercolour, a $750 non-acquisitive prize, goes to

- Ludij Peden…….Mango Cottage Irvinbank A sensational employment of light on a tine cottage has resulted in a crisp, homely subject that has a distinct

romantic appeal. Lovely understating in both foreground and background. A marriage of realism and

abstraction. Superb technique.

The Cairns Regional Council Open Award, a $1500 prize

- Jennie Scott ……Disposable Animals in War

The Oak Tree Retirement Village Unpackers’ Choice, a $500 non-acquisitive prize, goes to

- Andrew Linklater …… Gallery Body Language no 4

The Art Barn Highly Commended Award, a $250 gift certificate, goes to

- Lone White…….Rainforest Rebirth

En Plein Air Group

With Anne Toppin

A warm welcome to Anne Toppin from Mareeba, our new En Plein Air Co-ordinator. Starting during

the wet season might have been a challenge, had it not been for Anne’s initiative, and the generosity

of Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort who are allowing the En Plein Air art group to use a covered verandah

outside the restaurant with a good view of the pool and landscaped surroundings, including several

very paintable subjects. What more can we ask for? There is free parking available at the rear of the

hotel, but keep in mind that entry is through the lobby at 122 Lake Street. Anne will wait for partici-

pants in the lobby between 8.00 and 8.15am.

Sessions will be held on the 3rd Saturday of the month, from 8.00 to 11.00am during the hot

weather. Beginners and experienced artists are welcome. Anne will start by looking at the problems of

selecting what to paint from the landscape in front of you and focus some of the work on the intense

light of outdoors as opposed to the controlled light in a studio. Please put your name down if you

want to join this group. Anne is qualified teacher and has degrees from London Uni and UQ. Here in

Cairns Anne has also offered watercolour tuition at the Art Barn.

Anne has the whole 6 sessions planned, getting harder and more adventurous for the first 3 then more

doing your own thing for the last 3! Please bring charcoal, or charcoal pencils, or if you can't stand

touching charcoal, graphite sticks in 3 different shades; several sheets of white drawing paper about

A4 size; spray to set your picture (you never know when you will produce a work of genius!); some

tape to secure your paper and a board to press on; an eraser and a kneadable eraser. Everything should

fit into one bag or basket to make it easy for you to get around.

Please contact Anne on 4092 5214 or by email [email protected] As Anne is travelling from

Mareeba, there will be a small charge of $30 ($5 for each session) payable up front, to reimburse her

for petrol costs. If people would like to come, but starting time, commitment to 6 sessions or anything

else constitutes a problem, please contact Anne and she will be happy to discuss the matter with you.

Begins 16/2/13

This is a call for top quality artists to

join an artist co-operative.

This is a wonderful opportunity to show

your artwork at a great location!

Important Dates for your 2013 diary

ARTescape Winter Workshop 22nd to 26th July

Artist of the North October/November (Date TBA)

CAIRNS ARTescape

22-26 July 2013

Winter School in the tropics

Enjoy visual arts at the

Tanks Arts Centre,

Edge Hill

Cairns ARTescape will once again be held at the Tanks Arts Centre from Monday, July22nd to Friday, July

26th. Now in its 8th year, ARTescape Winter School in the Tropics, is a 5- day visual arts workshop pro-

gram.

Cairns Art Society initiated ARTescape to bring some of Australia’s leading tutors to Far North Queensland

to sharpen and hone arts practice skills and this year is no exception. In 2013 we have Richard Klekociuk

with an exciting beginners class for people who would just like to give it a go. Materials will be supplied

for this class, students just need to book and come along for some fun. Last year we introduced an encaustic

workshop presented by Mo Godbeer, this was such a success that Mo will be back again. We will also be

running a printing and pencil workshop with Christine Eyres, a paper making class with international tutor

Sandrine De Borman who will be an Artist in Residence at the Tanks. New tutors Patrick Carroll

(Abstraction to reality - Acrylic) and Helen Cottle (Expression - Water media) will bring their own touch of

creativity. Firm favourites Lyn Diefenbach, Garry Duncan, Greg Dwyer, Mike Ferris, Archibald Prize final-

ist Fu Hong, and Greg Allen will rejoin the tutorial team.

Most workshops cater for the beginner through to the advanced student - with such a

diverse range of media and subjects, there’s something for everyone! In fact, anyone

with an artistic interest will be in their element. Several classes are filling fast so it’s

best to get in early and book now.

For more information or to reserve your place in your preferred workshop, visit

www.cairnsartsociety.com or phone for bookings 0419 299 437.
