TWS ARTLINE Eleanor Lowden President, TWS Eleanor Lowden President TWS September 15, 2017 September always feels like back-to-school season. It’s the beginning of a new year, and a time when I feel I want to make positive changes; clean, organize and re-organize, get back to work and start fresh. It’s a time when I may take a workshop or start a new series of paintings. In August I spent a week teaching at the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour Symposium, which was held at the Alberta College of Art and Design. It was a great experience. Workshops were offered over 5 days. I taught 4 of the days; different workshops each day, with different students each day. There were 12 instructors and so participants benefited from different instruction each day; 5 mini workshops over the week. It was an excellent learning opportunity for everyone. The volunteer organizers were fantastic; everything was well planned, they worked really well together and had fun. It carried over into the energy among the participants. Everyone there had a great time, learning and meeting new people. I reconnected with many fellow artists that I knew from my years in Calgary, and I also got to meet new faces from Calgary, Vancouver, Kamloops, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Toronto. I hope that the Symposium can make its way back to Toronto, and if it does I would highly recommend it. It’s open to everyone. Our fall Aquavision show is up and running at the Joseph D. Carrier Gallery at the Columbus Centre. We had an excellent turnout for our opening last Thursday September 7th, with awards being presented that evening. The element of surprise was fun, as none of the award winners were told that they would be receiving an award until that evening. Our juror, Olexander Wlasenko, was extremely impressed with the overall quality of the work. The show hanging committee did an excellent job, thanks to everyone who came and helped. The show is up until October 2 nd , please make a trip out to see the work if you haven’t already. It’s always a pleasure to see what work everyone has been creating. We had over 140 submissions for the jury, with 100 pieces selected. Eleanor Lowden

HEARTS AND FLOWERS

In MemoriamFrances Watton

TWS members were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Frances Watton at the age of 92 at Belmont House on June 10th. Frances was a 20 year member of the Toronto Watercolour Society . She received her TWS lifetime membership in 2010. Frances participated in a number of our shows and was an active participant at the TWS weekend workshops. She was also a member of the Forest Hill Art Club, Willowdale Group of Artists, and the Don Valley Art Club. Frances was a popular and passionate children's librarian at the North York Central Library and for many years created many puppets and extravaganza sets to entertain children. She was renown throughout the Toronto Public Library System for her entertaining story times for children. At the memorial service on July 21st, we learned that Frances was a gracious, kind and generous hostess who loved a good discussion and had an independent point of view on many topics. She was a life time learner and an accomplished artist. Our condolences to her husband Paul of 60 years, daughter Barbara , son David, and grandson Ross. A card was sent on behalf of TWS.

HEARTS AND FLOWERS

Our condolences to: Ioana Bertrand, who lost her father in July and Shelley Beach who lost her brother to cancer in August. Sympathy cards have been sent on behalf of TWS.

In July, I travelled to Haliburton to visit Shelley Beach on the occasion of her art show in her studio in conjunction with "Art on The Dock" on Lake Kennisis . It was a lovely show and it garnered many sales for Shelley. I took flowers to Shelley on behalf of TWS.

Shelley is still battling ovarian cancer with numerous trips to Princess Margaret and TGH for treatment each month. Positive thoughts and wishes are sent to Shelley by many members!!!!!

Yaohua Yan Workshop

Expressing Different Perspectives for Streetscapes and Landscapes in Watercolour

It was an exciting workshop for TWS members who participated in this workshop in June. Yaohua Yan once again demonstrated his approach to Toronto streetscapes on Saturday and then demonstrated a scene en plein air just outside of the Carnegie Centre on Sunday. Yaohua gave lots of individual feedback and even did a bonus painting of some of us working in the Skater's Lounge . The pictures say it all !!

Gord James Demo

June 14, 2017Gord Jones

Gord is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. Gord’s sources of inspiration are landscapes, cityscapes andindustrial scenes which he paints en plein air or in the studio from photographs he has taken on location. His approach is to interpret theessence of his subjects, rather than a realisticrendering.

August 9, 2017Bonnie Steinberg

Bonnie Steinberg Demo

Bonnie painted a street scene with emphasis on architectural elements. She was very entertaining and gave us great information regarding pigment characteristics of the colours she used. Her painting was a loose and luminous image of a summer’s day at Niagara on the Lake.
